The 2009 DiabetesMine™ Design Challenge: Logan Clark
InterActive HealthAn animation video that centers on the pathology and cause of Diabetes. Designed to expand theawareness of diabetes. By doing so, the patient will be more likely to understand the need for  prevention, diet, exercise, and medication.
Introduction:
The diagnosis of type I and type II diabetes is essential for proper treatment and management of the disease. Type I is often seen at an early age and the patient has little, if any, overall medicalor scientific knowledge of their disease. Type II is usually, but not always, in the later stage of life with some measure of increased familiarity of medical and scientific basics. Improvements intreatment options for both type I and type II have advanced tremendously over the past 10 yearsand are visibly more elaborate in their goals, actions, and management of this condition. Theinsulin pump, pancreas transplant, islet cell transplant, glycemic index and other treatments are afew examples of advances that are increasing the quality of life for patients. We feel that further advancements are on the horizon and will prove essential for improvedquality of life and treatment for those with diabetes. Our primary interest lies with the increasingincidence of diabetes. Diabetes per capita is increasing at an alarming rate. Currently, accordingto American Diabetes Association, almost 24 million Americans suffer from diabetes - which is approaching 8% of the population. It is projected that around 2030 the world population of those who suffer with diabetes could bearound 300 million. This is double the current 140 plus million of those with diabetes currently. There is a serious concern! It is our experience that many who have both type I and type II understand only the minimum of their condition. Especially noted in type I, many do not understand the terminology associatedwith diabetes. Many newly diagnosed adults with type II confuse and give details of type I

pathology. They are unclear regarding the function of the pancreas and the respective roles of glucose and insulin in the body, much less the reasons they need an outside source of insulin.Adults with type II often are unsure what the purpose of the mediation(s) they are given and howthey work to control their blood sugars and even in some cases can help them lose weight.
Our Belief:
By improving the awareness and complexities of diabetes, a patient will be more willing to becompliant with diet modifications, exercise, prevention, and proper management of medications.
Our Approach:
Improving the knowledge and understanding of what diabetes consists of and how diet, exercise, and medications can improve this condition.
Our recommendations and plans:Phase I
- A website creation for medical information
Phase II
- Creation of a page that describes the basics of diabetes, diabetes type I, and diabetestype II
Phase III
- Create an animation and a discussion of type I diabetes
Phase IV
- Create an animation and a discussion of type II diabetes and the medicationsinvolved
Our Next Step:
Phase I:www.iahealth.net Accomplished Phase II: General Diabetes -www.iahealth.net/diabetes Accomplished Diabetes Type I - www.iahealth.net/diabetes-mellitus-type-1 Accomplished Diabetes Type II - www.iahealth.net/diabetes-mellitus-type-2 Accomplished Phase IIIThis is our next step- we have been in initial discussions with Brigham Young University currentand former student for a short five-minute animation on type I diabetes designed for a younger audience with visual and auditory explanations of type I diabetesAnimation dialogue can be found at -www.iahealth.net/the-animation-dialogue

Phase IVIn the future- A second animation targeted for adult comprehension, which explains basicdiabetes type II with more emphasis on the treatment process of medications and their modes of actions.
Our Goal:
