THE BATTLE BOW.BY REV. J. BATTERSBY,In the 10th Chapter of the Book of the Prophet Zechariah^and at the 4th verse, you will read the following words :** Out of Him came forth the corner, out of Himthe nail, out of him the battle bow, out of himevery oppressor together."There is very little known about the Prophet Zecha-riah beyond this, that he was one of the captivity, andreturned to Jerusalem in the days of Darius, about520 years before Christ ; and there prophesied. OurProphet was a contemporary of Haggai, as you read inthe 5th of Ezra, and the ist verse ; *' Then the Prophets,Haggai the Prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jeru-salem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them."And again, — ** And the elders of the jews builded, andthey prospered through the prophesying of Haggai theProphet and Zechariah the son Iddo. And they builded, and finished it (the house) , according to the commandmentof the God of Israel, and according to the command-ment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia." (Ezra vi. 14.) This Book of the ProphetZechariah may be divided into two parts: — First, itDigitized by V^OOQIC18contains an encouragement to the Jews to rebuild thetemple, and to restore the public worship of God : andin the second place, it contains a number of propheciesrelative to the Messiah, and to His coming in the flesh, and the consequent blessings of the Gosper arisingtherefrom during this Dispensation./ propose dividing the subject of the evening into two parts : — Firsts we shall notice some of the prophecies in this Book relative to the Messiah : and secondly, we shall endeavourto expound our text in keeping with the Messianic propheciesof the Book.

First, we shall notice some of the prophecies in this Book relative to the Messiah. In the 3rd Chapter, you have avery striking prophetical type. Joshua the high priestthough he appeared in filthy garments, yet he wasclothed with change of raiment. Holy garments wereput upon him for glory and beauty. ** Thus saith theLord of Hosts : " Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee : for they aremen wondered at : for, behold, I will bring forth MyServant the Branch." Joshua and his fellows : — ^Jesusand His disciples are the persons wondered at. It hasalways been so, and it will continue to be so to the endof time. The fellows and companions of Jesus are notonly ** a wonder unto many,'' but they are even awonder unto themselves. But Jesus is Jehovah's Ser-vant and Branch. " For behold the Stone that I havelaid before Joshua : upon One Stone shall be seveneyes : " — Perfect wisdom and knowledge. " Behold, Iwill engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in oneday." Who did this ? I know of no person, save One,and that wonderful person is the Lord Jesus Christ. Then follows: ** In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the Vine " — Christ is the Vine : — *' and under the Fig Tree."Christ is the Fig Tree. " And none shall make themafraid." And again in the 6th Chapter and the 12thverse : ** And speak unto Him, saying, * Thus speakeththe Lord of hosts, saying. Behold The Man WhoseDigitized by VjOOQIC19ame is the Branch.' " This is the Man Christ Jesus, the brightness of the Father's glory and the ExpressImage of His Person. ** And He shall grow up out of His place." This denotes His coming forth from HisFather's bosom, and His wonderful birth in the fulnessof time of a Virgin Mother. He shall come forth " outof His place, and He shall build the temple of theLord : " — which temple of the Lord are ye, the Churchof the Living God. '* Know ye not that ye are thetemple of God 1 " *' Even He shall build the temple of

the Lord ; and He shall bear the Glory, and shall sitand rule upon His throne," as King and Priest of Hispeople for ever. " And the counsel of peace shall bebetween them both " — ^Jew and Gentile made one inChrist Jesus. You read of those that are far oif, and of those that are near being built in the temple of theLord of hosts. There is another prophecy which we must notice inthe gth Chapter. ow we know that this prophecywas accomplished when our Lord rode into Jerusalem." Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion ; shout, Odaughter of Jerusalem : behold, thy King cometh untothee : He is just, and having salvation ; lowly, andriding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."(Matt. xxi. 4, 5.)Another prophecy relating to our Lord Jesus Christis that of His being sold for thirty pieces of silver,(xi. 10-13.) This was literally accomplished whenJudas betrayed our Lord, and when the money wasdisposed of by the chief priests and elders, as describedby the prophet. (Matt, xxvii. 3-8.)In the 13th Chapter, the sword of vengeance is spokenof as awaking against Him, as in the 7th verse : — *' * Awake, sword, against my Shepherd, and againstthe Man that is my Fellow,' saith the Lord of Hosts " : — ^Jesus is the Fellow of Jehovah Father. ** Smite theShepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered : and I willturn Mine Hand upon the little ones." We gatherfrom our Lord's words that this Scripture was fulfilledwhen he was smitten, and His disciples were scattered.Digitized by VjOOQIC20(Matt. XXVI. 31.) ow, He forgot not His little ones ; — for on the day of Pentecost, He turned the Right Handof His Holy Spirit upon them and filled them with thefulness thereof. When the sword of divine justice wasbathed in the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, then wassalvation accomplished for the chief of sinners. " Inthat day there shall be a fountain opened to the house
