Mr.SchumanwasbornunderthenameofYuriBezmenovinMoscowin1939,thesonofaseniorofficerintheRedArmy.Consequently,hewenttogoodschools.Attheageof17heenteredtheInstituteofOrientalLang-uagesofMoscowStateUniversity.Aftergraduating,heworkedforNo-vosti,thenspenttwoyearsinIndiaasaninterpreterandpublicrelationsofficerwithSovietRefineriesConst-ructions.HereturnedtoMoscowin1965,toworkforNovosti,servingasEconomicEditorfortheHindi,UrduandEnglishEditionsofSovietlandMagazine.In1969hewentbacktoIndiaandcontinuedpropagandaeffortsforNovostiinNewDelhi,workingoutoftheSovietEmbassyinadepartmentcalledResearchandCounter-Propagan-da.Duetohisgrowingdisgust,hebe-gantoplandefection.InFebruaryof1970hedisguisedhimselfasahippiecompletewithbeadsandwigandjoinedatourgrouptoescapetoAthens.HecontactedtheUnitedStatesEmbassyand,afteralongdebriefingbyU.S.Intelligence,wasgrantedasylumandwenttoCana-da.InCanada,hestudiedpoliticalscience,atthe,UniversityofTorontofortwoyears,taughtRussianlanguageandliteratureandin1972washiredbytheCanadianBroadcastingCorporation'sInternationalServiceasaProducer/Announcer,broadcastingtotheSovietUnion.TheK.G.B.forcedhimoutofthejobin1976,sohebeganfree-lancejournalismandworkedonavarietyofprojects.TodayheisapoliticalanalystforPANORAMAW.I.N.inLosAngeles.Heismarried,andhastwochildren.Heistheauthoroftwoyetunpub-lishedbooks.
