Bury My Clothes
Roger Bonair-Agard
Praise for Bury My Clothes : Bury My Clothes is a gut-level read, one that you must prepare for with not only your head but also your body. ese unapologetically relentless stanzas, practically quivering with funk and resolve, will slam their sts into places you have not yet discovered. If there is a poet for this Zeitgeist, of Arab Spring, of governments toppling, a poet to listen to the people, a poet not just for this country but all countries, a poet I have been looking for my whole life, it is Roger Bonair-Agard. Part Aim Csaire, part Hikmet, part Black Arts Movement, part hip-hop-non-stop-bodyrock Brooklyn, he sees beyond borders to erase them with words. A poet of family, and funk ordained in the boogie, of celebration and hallelujahs, and loss. Of knowing loss. And going on, as we all must go, Roger helps us go on, even though All airports now make you weep. You come/from weepingWednesdays child. 23. You come/from woe. Your mother and your passport tell you so. Sean Thomas Dougherty, author, All I Ask for Is Longing ese poems oer up a speech textured with both the violence of racial construction and the complicated gorgeousness born out of survival and adaptation. ese poems insist on the beauty of the darknesses we are bound by, and mean to help us live by reminding us: there is no crevice of grief or grace where something does not bloom. Aracelis Girmay, author, Teeth and Kingdom Animalia Bury My Clothes is the sound of language breaking open. Bonair-Agard is reaching farther both in time and in syntax to say more than he has ever said before. It is a masterwork in which the poet has found the canopy of night black enough for everything hes ever wanted to say. Karen Finneyfrock, author, Ceremony for the Choking Ghost Bury My Clothes is a breadth of language that straddles Arouca and Chicago, hiphop and calypso with the brawling, arming righteousness of the Black televangelist leading us through violence and love to the wealth of unexpected tenderness. How the Chicago teachers strike of 2012 electrified the city and held the line against corporate education reform.

ISBN: 978-1-60846-335-0 Trade Paper, $16, 220 pages November 2013 Ebook ISBN: 978-1-60846-348-0, $16
Aer years in which teachers have been blamed for the problems of underfunded and understaed schools, the Chicago teachers strike of 2012 transformed the debate. From the overwhelming strike authorization vote that overcame anti-union legislation to repeated mass marches and protests, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) showed that teachers were determined to make their voices heard in response to corporate-driven education reform. e answer was a resounding NO. Where other urban teachers unions had retreated on the traditional pillars of teacher unionism such as tenure and opposition to merit pay, the CTU held the line in dramatic fashion. But Chicago teachers did far more than ght for their own interests. From the outset, they made common cause with parent and community groups that are opposed to school closings and the proliferation of nonunionand oen substandardcharter schools. With public education on the fast track for privatization in cities like New Orleans, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Cleveland, the CTU committed itself to a fully funded public education with an enriched curriculum for all the citys children. is was social movement unionism on a scale unseen in decades in the United States. e result was a broad alliance between teachers, parents, and workingclass communities. When the CTU hit the picket line, the union found itself leading perhaps the most popular big-city teachers strike in US history. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, one of the most powerful politicians in the country, was forced to back down.

Davidson discusses how Marxism can retain a sense of historical tradition without becoming fossilized.
Neil Davidson
Praise for How Revolutionary Were the Bourgois Revolutions? : I was frankly poleaxed by this magnicent book. Davidson resets the entire debate on the character of revolutions: bourgeois, democratic, and socialist. Hes sending me, at least, back to the library. Mike Davis, author, Planet of Slums
ISBN: 978-1-60846-333-6 Trade Paper, $22, 480 pages November 2013 Ebook ISBN: 978-1-60846-355-8, $22
Neil Davidson wends his way through the jagged terrain of a wide range of Marxist writings and debates to distill their lessons in what is unquestionably the most thorough discussion of the subject to date. If the paradox at the heart of the bourgeois revolutions was that the emergence of the modern bourgeois state had little to do with the agency of the bourgeoisie, then Davidsons study is by far the most nuanced and illuminating discussion of this complex fact. A brilliant and fascinating book, wide ranging and lucidly written. Jairus Banaji, author, Theory as History
is book of essays by Deutscher Prizewinning historian Neil Davidson insightfully explores themes running through historical materialism as he explains the moments of transition from the dominance of one mode of production to another; the process of social revolution that accompany these transitions; and the problem of nationalism, both as a theoretical challenge to Marxisms capacity for historical explanation and as a practical obstacle to socialist consciousness. Examining classical and contemporary gures, subjects range from Naomi Kleins view of neoliberalism to Marx and Engelss views on Scotland.
Neil Davidson teaches at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He is author of The Origins of Scottish Nationhood, the Deutsher Prize-winning Discovering the Scottish Revolution, and How Revolutionary Were the Bourgeois Revolutions? This beginners guide to Capital illustrates the key concepts, humor, and immense vitality to be enjoyed in Marxs great work.
Marxs Capital
An Illustrated Introduction
[Marxs Capital: An Illustrated Introduction] is very, very good, a brilliant exposition and a really creative relationship between image and explanation.
John Berger
Few books have been subject to more abuse, debasement, and misuse than Karl Marxs opus Das Kapital. Since its publication in 1867 Capital has been held up as holy writ by some, denounced as sacrilege by others, and generally unread by most people in between, largely thanks to the volumes reputation for impenetrability. Marx may have hoped for his masterwork to be read widely by members of the working class, but it is only with the publication of this Illustrated Introduction that his dreams might nally come to fruition. Marxs Capital: An Illustrated Introduction presents this classic text as its author may have originally intended but never had the artistic talents to realize: in the form of a graphic novel. Richly illustrated on every page, strikingly accessible, and surprisingly comprehensive, David Smith and Phil Evans bring an engaging vibrancy to Capital without diluting any of its original content.
ISBN: 978-1-60846-266-7 Trade Paper, $15, 190 pages May 2013 Ebook ISBN: 978-1-60846-291-9, $16

In this illuminating and original work, Hanieh demonstrates that the Arab Spring rebellions are about much more than democracy.
Lineages of Revolt
Issues of Contemporary Capitalism in the Middle East
Adam Hanieh
Praise for Capitalism and Class in the Gulf Arab States : is remarkable scholarly study informed by a critical perspective is most topical indeed at a time when the Gulf monarchies conrm their role as the key stronghold of reaction in a region deeply shaken by a tremendous revolutionary wave. Gilbert Achcar
ISBN: 978-1-60846-325-1 Trade Paper, $19.95, 348 pages September 2013 Ebook ISBN: 978-1-60846-352-7, $19.95
Haniehs groundbreaking book argues that we should not view the Gulf Arab states as anomalies in the worldwide economy. Instead, he claims, the story of twentieth-century capitalism could not be told without recounting their central role: the global economy is part of the actual essence of the Gulf itselfthe development of the global appears through the development of the Gulf. Arab Studies Journal Insightful, timely, and welcome . . . the analytical framework and substantial data [Hanieh] puts forward in the book will help readers map out the current and future processes of regional integration, class formations, and contradictions, and to situate these processes within the wider global political economy. International Socialist Review
e prevailing wisdom about the Arab Spring uprisings holds that these revolts have been mass struggles waged against authoritarian regimes in pursuit of democracy. Yet if the revolutions sweeping the Middle East were so easily reducible to the issue of democratic freedoms, why have they erupted now, decades into single-party rule in Egypt, Syria, Libya, and Tunisia? Moreover, why have the demonstrations continued apace even aer the establishment of free elections? In an accessible and engaging style, Hanieh shows how the key to answering these questionsand ultimately to understanding the Arab revolutionslies in an analysis of the specic nature of capitalist development in the Middle East.
Adam Hanieh teaches development studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London (UK). He is author of Capitalism and Class in the Gulf Arab States.
Addresses what educators, young people, and concerned citizens can do to reclaim higher education from market-driven neoliberal ideologies.
Teachers as Intellectuals is a book for all practitioners and all members of the greater community. Giroux demands reader involvement, transformation, and empowerment. He helps us understand that the political relationship between schools and society is neither articial nor neutral nor necessarily negative. Rather, school personnel have a positive and dynamic political role to play. Educational Leadership

Higher Education aer Neoliberalism argues that the democratic crisis in the United States is inextricably connected to an education crisis, which is currently impacting young people most of all by starving them of the formative educational experiences required to help them develop as engaged and socially conscious citizens. As the United States proceeds headlong on a reckless course of civic illiteracy, Giroux reveals how neoliberal policies, practices, and modes of material and symbolic violence have radically reshaped the mission and practice of higher education, including its modes of governance, its deskilling of faculty, its view of students and its increasing integration into power relations dominated by big money, corporate interests, and market-driven values. Beyond exposing the moral depravity of a nation that miseducates its young, this book addresses what educators, young people, and concerned citizens can do to reclaim higher education as a crucial site for promoting engaged citizenship and the public good.
Henry A. Giroux currently holds the Global TV Network Chair Professorship at McMaster University. His recent books include Disposable Youth: Racialized Memories and the Culture of Cruelty and Youth in Revolt: Reclaiming a Democratic Future.

A socialist perspective on womens oppression and liberation, exploring the connection between womens rights and equality for all.
Sharon Smith
Praise for Women and Socialism: Essays on Womens Liberation : An excellent resource for anyone concerned with womens liberation and an antidote to the mystication which permeates gender politics today. Its attention to the oppressions visited on women generallythe denial of abortion rights and the dead hand of organized religionmake it a fresh and immediate read. It very eectively arms us with the necessary arguments and ideas to set about this business of ending womens oppression. Socialist Democracy
In this new book, Sharon Smith, sets out to re-establish the centrality of the struggle for womens liberation to the revolutionary socialist project, and vice versa. She evaluates both the strengths and limitations of classical Marxist theory in light of changes in social relationsincluding those achieved by struggles against racism, sexism and homophobiawhile maintaining the centrality of class divisions in modern capitalism. She digs into theoretical explanations for womens oppression among socialist- and Marxist-feministsespecially social reproduction theory. She also examines the contributions of Black feminists and other women of color in developing intersectionality theory in the global context of both capitalism and imperialism. In addition, Smith revisits some of the historical developments that have too oen prevented constructive dialogue between Marxists and feminists since the 1960s, despite their mutual commitment to womens liberation. ese include 1) sexism within the New Le of the 1960s, as a distortion of classical Marxism; 2) the rejection of Marxism as essentialist among many radicals in the more recent era of postmodernism; and 3) the reluctance of many Marxists to engage with the oen path-breaking theoretical advances of feminists. Smiths contention is that integrating key aspects of feminist analysis with Marxist theory is essential to advancing the theory and practice of womens liberation, with an eye toward strengthening the struggles for womens liberation taking place today.
Sharon Smith is the author of Women and Socialism: Essays on Womens Liberation and Subterranean Fire: A History of Working Class Radicalism in the United States.

True, Emma is idealized; she is loving, honest, selfless, daring, but she is also human and believable. Walter Goodman, New York Times

A Play on History
978-1-60846-301-5, Trade Paper, $14, 88 pages

An imaginative critique of our societys hypocrisies and injustices, and an entertaining, vivid portrait of Karl Marx as a voice of humanitarian justice. Kirkus Reviews

The Center for Economic Research and Social Change (CERSC) is dedicated to a better understanding of todays world, and helping to put forward the vision of a better future. Our central goal is education. By highlighting alternative voices, especially those that have been pushed to the margins, we hope to contribute to a greater insight and
awareness of the injustices that exist in society and the many efforts at the grass roots to right these wrongs. CERSCs projects include the book publisher Haymarket Books, the bimonthly magazine International Socialist Review, the audio and video archive wearemany.org, and numerous educational events and conferences.
