Zakaria, Jeddah, published in Arab News on 22 May 1994 Benazir should talk with Altaf The government and MQM are accusing each other for violence and large numbers of casualties in Karachi. The situation in Sindh Specially in Karachi is worsening with every passing day. Democracy or people power has failed in Pakistan. The present governments handling of the MQM only proves that PPP leaders have not to learned any lesson from the past. Surprisingly Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto who herself suffered under the past regimes is meeting out harsh treatment on the entire Mohajir community. The government is pushing the entire Mohajir community to the wall and deliberately destroying Karachi, which is the industrial and financial capital of the country. I might dislike Mr. Altaf Hussain and his policies but does it change Mr. Altafs position as sole and undisputed leader of 15-million Mojajir? Surprisingly a politician of Ms. Bhuttos caliber does not seem to understand that she can win the hearts of Mohajirs by being a little more flexible to their demands. Let us all hope that the government of Ms. Bhutto will wisely and generously accept the reasonable demands of Mohajirs and pave the way for their leader Mr. Altaf Hussains return to Pakistan. The prime minister should meet Mr. Altaf and create a conducive atmosphere for serious negotiations. Muhammed H. Zakaria Jeddah
