The blind pig above this printshop at 9125 12th Streetbetween Clairmount andAtkinson streets became theflashpoint for the chaos. Policeraided the club at 3:40 a.m.Sunday, July 23. As the lastarrestees were loaded intopolice cars, a bottle crashedthrough a squad car window.What had been Saturday nightrevelry quickly turned into acrowd of about 200 shoutingangry cries against "the man"and "whitey."
 
 
 
Police watch as chaos spills into theintersection of 12th and Clairmount in Detroitfollowing a predawn police raid on a blind pig --an illegal drinking establishment. It is Sunday,July 23, 1967. When the violence ended fivedays later, 43 people had died. The racial unrestbecame known as the nation's worst.
