Information is Vital toBusiness Success
Twenty-first century companies rely on digital information todrive business. Paper forms have been digitized and virtually allrecords are stored electronically. The cost benefits andbusiness efficiencies resulting from this transformation areundeniable. Despite that, businesses still confront the realitythat the inability to access information or the ineffectivemanagement of that information can be very costly. There arenumerous examples of how a data breach or loss of access toinformation has impacted a business, not to mention the stigmaof public embarrassment and the potential impact onshareholder value.Consider one recent public example of how information lossimpacted the airline industry. In August 2008, the FederalAviation Administration (FAA) experienced a computer failure inAtlanta, GA. The computer failure in and of itself wasn’t theproblem; there was a redundant system in Salt Lake City, UTthat immediately kicked in to handle the air traffic control thatenabled operations to continue. However, when the secondarysite was unable to handle the full operational load, informationwas not accessible and the FAA had to suspend operations.Though service was eventually restored, the net result wascancelled and delayed flights, resulting in the airlines losingmillions of dollars in just a few short hours. That is just one of many examples of how a business’ inability to accessinformation or ineffective management of that information canbe detrimental and costly. To avoid similar occurrences, information storage managementskills should be elevated as a critical requirement for businesses and the IT groups that support them. But how doesone acquire and develop those skills? Unlike the formal, structured IT training programs widely available for networkingand applications, information storage and managementeducation programs are just starting to emerge. Consequently, information storage skills are commonly learned over time andthrough trial by fire. This type of unstructured learning isinefficient, incomplete, and ineffective. Faced with rapid datagrowth and accelerated speed in which business is conducted,a new solution must be found.
EMC Education Services isleading the way inimplementing courses, curricula, and programs thatdevelop a pipeline to meet thegrowing demand for skilledinformation storage andmanagement professionals.
