Ballast Water TechnologyDemonstration ProgramSummary Description: NOAA, theU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and theU.S. Maritime Administration expect toentertain proposals to conduct ballastwater treatment technology testing anddemonstration projects. The BallastWater Technology DemonstrationProgram supports projects to develop,test, and demonstrate technologies thattreat ships
ballast water in order toreduce the threat of introduction of aquatic invasive species to U.S. watersthrough the discharge of ballast water.Funding Availability: Depending on2005 appropriations, NOAA and theU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service expect tomake available up to about $2 millionin FY 2005, and the U.S. MaritimeAdministration expects to makeavailable several vessels for use as testplatforms, support ballast watertreatment technology demonstrationprojects. National Strategic Investment inAquatic Invasive Species Research andOutreachSummary Description: The NationalSea Grant College Program seeks to fundresearch and outreach projectsaddressing the introduction and spreadof aquatic invasive species. The goal of the program is to discover and developinformation and tools that can lead tothe prevention, monitoring and controlof aquatic invasive species threateningUnited States coastal, oceanic and GreatLakes communities, resources andecosystems. Appropriate areas of research may include: biology and lifehistory research, population dynamics,genetics, physiology, behavior, andparasites and diseases of nonindigenousspecies, ecological and environmentaltolerances of nonindigenous species,impacts of invasive species at each stageof their life history on the environment,resources, and human health, researchinto invasive species control measures(engineering, physical, chemical, biological, physicochemical,administrative, and educational), andeconomic impact analysis of invasivespecies on marine and coastal resources,sport, commercial and tribal fisheries,the recreation and tourism industry, theshipping and navigation industry, andmunicipal and industrial water users.Other appropriate areas of endeavormay include: use of research results toprovide a scientific basis for developingsound policy and environmental law,public education and technologytransfer, research and outreach intoidentifying vectors of ANS introduction,and education and outreach activitiesthat will transfer this information to theappropriate users.Funding Availability: Depending onthe overall funding appropriation for the
