Makoto Fujimura, born in 1960 in Boston and educated bi-culturally
between the U.S. and Japan, is a New York-based artist.His work reects a sustained meditation on relations between artand faith, beauty and reconciliation. His essays and blogs at www.makotofujimura.com suggest his keen interest in a contemporary
world in the throes of transformation, anxiety, and hope. In 1990, he
 founded The International Arts Movement, which gathers creativeartists to wrestle with issues of faith, humanity, and creativity.Critic Robert Kushner has written: “The idea of forging a new kind 
of art, about hope, healing, redemption, refuge, while maintaining 
visual sophistication and intellectual integrity, is a growing 
movement, one which nds Fujimura’s work at the vanguard.”

Born in New Jersey and now living in Minneapolis, Paul Shambroomhas made a photographic career exploring the relationship between
 American power and culture.The images seen in these pages were selected from his book of 83color photos called 
Face to Face with the Bob: Nclear Reality
 
after the Cold War
(Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003).
 At www.paulshambroomart.com, he writes: “The ending of the Cold War raised great hopes that justication for nuclear weapons would 
tumble along with the Berlin Wall. To date, such hopes have beenunfounded. … I hope my photographs will connect viewers to thecontinuing legacy of these events, and help them to confront and dene their own attitudes about the nuclear present and future.”
