In 1440, German inventor Jo-hannes Gutenberg invented a printing press process that, withreﬁnements and increased mecha-nization, remained the principalmeans of printing until the late 20thcentury. The inventor’s method of printing from movable type, includ-ing the use of metal molds and al-loys, a special press, and oil-basedinks, allowed for the ﬁrst time themass production of printed books.
