PREFACE
This publication serves as an introduction to theInternational Phonetic Alphabet and provides opportunitiesfor the application of English diction rules.Exercises were created from the lyrics of over 1,000English art songs. Source words were placed in list formatand arranged by frequency of occurrence. The mostcommon words are short in length and appear inenunciation exercises. Other frequently occurring wordsare introduced in graded order and categorized accordingto English speech sounds as defined by the InternationalPhonetic Alphabet. A study of articulatory phonetics isprovided and includes consonant and vowel charts forapplication and definition of terms. Each unit highlights a specified group of symbols andincludes enunciation instructions with exercises, rules fortranscription, in-class application and individuallyassigned word lists. The English workbook is unique inthat it provides enunciation instructions for difficultconsonant combinations. It also contains two separate setsof exercises within the individually assigned word lists: 1)Words in transcription allow for student identification of IPA and 2) English lyric word lists offer opportunities fortranscription. The methods outlined in this text are based on MadeleineMarshall’s
The Singer’s Manual of English Diction
. Herrecommendations for vowels and consonants are appliedas well as rules for transcription within the phrase.Exercises allow students to place transcription within thecontext of the music. Proficiency of memorized rules isassessed through in-class enunciation.Practice quizzes and a summary of rules are provided foreasy reference and review. The
 Answer Key
is alsoavailable for alternate lesson plans which may includestudent grading and board work. The
