Keyless Entry: Testing and InspectionPinpoint TestsTest Notes
oor Lock Motors/Switches Inoperative
The door locks are wired so that the lock and unlock switches on the doors/liftgate can operate the door locks with or without a receiver assemblyinstalled in the system. The door lock switches are wired directly to the relays that control the door locks. When the receiver assembly operates the door locks, it provides a ground just like the door lock switches. Both the GEM and receiver assembly operatethe door unlock relays.(GEM performs the two-key-turn unlock. Refer to Section 18-04A .) If the receiver assembly and GEM are both disconnected and the door locks stilldon't work, there is a switch, motor, lock mechanism, fuse orwiring issue. The receiver assembly uses the LOCK ALL and UNLOCK ALL Circuits 119 and 120 as outputs, but also monitors these circuits as inputs to see whenthe door lock switches are pressed.ressing the UNLOCK switch on the door can unlock all doors. It unlocks the driver's door by supplying power to the driver's door lock motor throughthe normally closed contacts of the driver's door unlock relay.
OTE:
If state is SHORT, check and service Circuits 120 (PK/LG) and 119 (PK/Y) for short to ground or each other.
A: Door Lock Motors/Switches Inoperative
A: DOOR LOCK MOTORS/SWITCHES INOPERATIVEA1 CHECK MECHANICAL OPERATION OF LOCKS
-Manually (not electrically) cycle the lock by turning the key in the door.
Do the door lock mechanisms move freely?
YesGO to A2NoSERVICE the door lock mechanisms (LUBRICATE linkage, CLEAR interferences, etc.).ces, etc.)
A2 DOOR LOCKS DON'T WORK WITH LOCK SWITCHES ON THE DOORS
-Check the fuses for the door lock motors.
Are the fuses OK?
YesGO to A3NoLOCATE the wiring short in the door lock power circuits. REPLACE fuse.
A3 CHECK STATUS OF DOOR LOCK SWITCHES
-Enter in NGS: RAP, PID/DATA and select DRLK SW to monitor the door lock and unlock switches.
OTE:
Some vehicles may have power door locks, but may not have a receiver assembly system. If there is no receiver assembly, tests are limited tovoltage and resistance measuring.
Is NGS DRLK SW state OFF?
YesGO to A4NoIf the display says UNLOCK, CHECK and SERVICE the all unlock Circuit 120 (PK/LG), door unlock switches or GEM module for a short toground. If the display says LOCK, CHECK and SERVICE the all lock Circuit 119 (PK/Y) or door lock switches for a short to ground. If thedoors lock and then unlock about once every five seconds after ignition is turned from OFF to RUN and back to OFF, CHECK the audio system. If the rear control unit (RCU) of the audio system has a connector unplugged or a loose ground, then the audio system will not work. Anotherside effect is that there is a floating voltage on the ignition Circuit 1002 (BK/PK) to the receiver assembly. The receiver assembly is being putinto transmitter programming mode every few seconds. Fixing the audio RCU ground will fix this lock/unlock condition too.
A4 CHECK OPERATION OF DOOR LOCK SWITCHES
-Press LOCK button on each door lock switch and confirm that NGS, RAP DRLK SW state changes to LOCK when switches are pressed.-Press UNLOCK button on each door lock switch and confirm that NGS, RAP DRLK SW state changes to UNLOCK when switches are pressed.
Does LOCK and UNLOCK state for each door lock switch occur?
YesGO to A5

No-If UNLOCK state doesn't occur, CHECK and SERVICE the all unlock Circuit 120 (PK/LG) or door unlock switches for an open, orSERVICE the grounding circuit for the door lock switch. If LOCK state doesn't occur, CHECK and SERVICE the all lock Circuit 119(PK/Y) or door lock switches for an open.-If always UNLOCK, CHECK and SERVICE the all unlock Circuit 120 (PK/LG) or door unlock switches for a short to ground.-If always LOCK, CHECK and SERVICE the all lock Circuit 119 (PK/Y) or door lock switches for a short to ground. If the doors lock andthen unlock about once every five seconds after ignition is turned from OFF to RUN and back to OFF, CHECK the audio system. If the rearcontrol unit (RCU) of the audio system has a connector unplugged or a loose ground, then the audio system will not work. Another side effectis that there is a floating voltage on the ignition Circuit 1002 (BK/PK) to the receiver assembly. The receiver assembly is being put intotransmitter programming mode every few seconds. Fixing the audio RCU ground will fix this lock/unlock condition too.
A5 CHECK RECEIVER ASSEMBLY ALL LOCK OUTPUT
-Enter in NGS RAP ACTIVE COMMANDS and select DR LOCK ON.
Do all doors lock?
YesGO to A6NoCHECK and SERVICE Circuit 119 (PK/Y) from receiver assembly to relay. If circuit is OK, CALL phone number on receiver assembly foradditional assistance.
A6 CHECK RECEIVER ASSEMBLY UNLOCK DRIVER'S DOOR OUTPUT
-Select NGS LF UNLOCK.
Does driver's door unlock?
YesGO to A7NoCHECK and SERVICE driver's door unlock Circuit 129 (LG) from receiver assembly to relay. If circuit is OK, CALL phone number on receiverassembly for additional assistance.stance.
A7 CHECK RECEIVER ASSEMBLY ALL UNLOCK OUTPUT

B: Transmitter/Remote Entry Inoperative
: TRANSMITTER/REMOTE ENTRY INOPERATIVE
emote Entry range may be affected when operated within a quarter mile of some radio or TV towers. Although the range is reduced at these locations, the owner should still be able to enter their vehicle using the remote transmitter. A special transmitter TIC/DATA menu is available on NGS Testersovember 1994 and later. A receiver assembly on vehicles made before February 1995 will respond to this menu but will have diagnosticommunication ending only a few seconds after entering the menu.
1 CHECK TRANSMITTER/REMOTE ENTRY OPERATION
-Turn ignition OFF.-Perform the self test as described in Remote Control Alarm and Lock System, Pinpoint Test A to insure that the receiver assembly has power.See: Testing and Inspection/Remote Control Alarm and Lock System-Press each button on remote entry transmitter fob while standing 10 meters/yards away from vehicle and confirm that operation is as described inDescription and Operation, Transmitter, Remote Entry .
Was there an appropriate response for each button press? button press?
yesSystem OKNoGO to B2 if there was no response to the transmitter. GO to the correct pinpoint test for the specific output which did not function correctly, if there was only a partial response. Some outputs are covered in Antitheft and Alarm Systems. See: Testing and Inspection
