Devoting himself to the rare
coin and precious metal trade
for well over three decades,
Westerlings commitment to the
customer is second to none. From
their Roseville office, he and his
associates offer purchases and
appraisals for estates, banks, insur-
ance companies and individuals.
My staff and I are dedicated
to helping people preserve and
grow their wealth, Westerling
explains. Thats why The Truman
Company offers personalized ser-
vice tailored to each individual.
Introduced to the business by
his Uncle Truman, a young Roger
became enamored with coins. This
nearly-lifelong passion encour-
aged Westerling to open his own
business under the Truman name.
Every time he visited my fam-
ily, he gave me a coin that had an
interesting history. His hope was
that I would develop a real inter-
est in rare and unusual coins, and
it worked, Westerling says with
a smile.
Westerling visited Minnesota to
appraise a collection in 1998, and
was so touched by the welcome he
received he decided to move both
his home and business to St. Paul.
He currently works with about
3,000 clients around the country.
Westerling is a life member
of the American Numismatic
Association and holds an A+
rating with the Better Business
Bureau.
His knowledge can reassure
people that theyre insuring or
pricing such items correctly. Im
more than happy to visit a home
or bank to review a collection,
Westerling notes. Theres a mar-
ket for everything!
Though old coins appreci-
ate gradually, precious metals
have undergone dramatic spikes
over the past decade in value,
Westerling adds. From 2002 to
2013, the value of silver went up
by 668 percent and gold by 595
percent. Many of Westerlings
customers are currently trans-
ferring individual retirement
account funds from banks to a
precious metal IRA.
I honestly think the prices
for gold and silver will con-
tinue to rise throughout our
lifetime, while the U. S. dollar
declines, Westerling explains.
Transferring to a precious metal
IRA can be an excellent invest-
ment.
Customers will feel at home
in The Truman Company office,
where they might even meet
Westerlings pooch, Sonny, and
his wife, Donna, a Twin Cities
artist whose work is featured
throughout the office.
Curious about the worth of
a personal collection? Roger
Westerling and his staff at The
Truman Company are ready to
help.
The Truman Company: a valuable
source for coins and precious metals
T
rust and confidence are
key in the coin indus-
try, and customers
from all over Minnesota and the
U.S. have found an extraordinary
guide in Roger Westerling of The
Truman Company.

Truman Company office in Roseville.
This is a look at the variety of coins and pieces in The Truman
Companys collection. With 37 years experience in the field,
Roger Westerling can appraise and handle a wide range of
inventory.
Roger Westerling was introduced to coins at a young age by his
Uncle Truman, a numismatist for whom the company is named.
Westerling is as passionate about coin collection as his custom-
ers, making them feel right at home when they visit The Truman
Company.

Kaposia Days 2013 Page 4
Long before the Packers shot their
first puck, before the stockyards gave the
city its regional prominence or the
first mayor and council took
office, the land where South
St. Paul now sits housed a
modest village of teepees
along the Mississippi.
This village, called
Kaposia for the band of
Mdewakanton Sioux who
lived there, was officially
founded in 1837 in a treaty
with the government, but had been a
seasonal outpost of the Kaposia at least
since 1700s, while they maintained their
primary residence on the east side of the
river. The band already inhabited the
region when fur trappers and missionar-
ies recorded the first accounts.
The Kaposia, whose name means
light of foot, were renowned for being
friendly and open to waves of settlers
that quickly flooded the area. By the
time South St. Paul was incorporated in
1886, the Kaposia Village consisted of
about 20 lodges housing about 100 tribe
members.
Today the site of the village has now
become Kaposia Park, but since 1976 a
team of dedicated volunteers has come
together each year to honor the
first inhabitants of the land
and reinforce the sense of
community that transcends
time and culture. This year,
from June 28 to 30, resi-
dents are invited to join in
the 37th annual Kaposia
Days and celebrate the past,
present and future of South St.
Paul.
Whether youve been coming to
Kaposia Days since childhood or this
year will be your first, you can be confi-
dent the festival will be a great time for
the entire family provided the family
likes food, fireworks, live music, danc-
ing, parades, games, wrestling, crafts and
things of that nature.

ers discounts on a number of events all
weekend.

festival with a swim at Lorraine Park,

fashioned brawls with Pro Wrestling
America at the VFW, or turbocharge

this year.

grader at Holy Trinity. For a full list of

City adds events
While Kaposia Days celebrates life in
South St. Paul, the actual city of South
St. Paul doesnt spend much time in the
spotlight most years. Typically, it sup-
plies barriers, shuts down streets for the
parade and provides police officers to
help out during the events.
We do some of the behind-the-
scenes stuff, explains Deb Griffith, the
citys community affairs liaison and offi-
cial representative to the Kaposia Days
board. We do what we can, but they
(the board members) are truly the lead-
ers of Kaposia Days, and thats the way it
should be.
This year, however, the city has been
asked to do something special by sched-
uling some of its popular summer events
to take place during Kaposia Days.
One of the summer classics, the
All City Garage Sale, gives residents
a prominent opportunity to turn the
contents of their basements and attics
into someone elses treasure. This year
the sales start June 27, the night before
Kaposia Days events begin, and last
through June 30. Participants pay $14 to
register for the official sale listing, with
all proceeds going to future community
events. The list of sales is provided free
to all shoppers.
This year brings the addition of
the All City Water Balloon Dodgeball
Tournament to Kaposia Days June 30.
Kaposia Days is well known for its collection of games and activities, some of
which give participants a chance to splash away the summer heat.

The Kaposia Days Softball Tournament has been a much-beloved part of the festival from the very beginning, and organizers say its now grown to the second-largest
tournament of its kind in the state.
Some events at Kaposia Days
are tweaked, refined or replaced to
make festival participants have as
much fun as possible. Others, like
the Kaposia Days Annual Softball
Tournament, had it right from the
very beginning.
Not only is the softball tourna-
ment one of the original events,
but for the last 23 years its been
organized by the same man Rich
Rakness.
He says the only thing thats
different about the tournament
today is the size: in the beginning,

Last years Kaposia Days was the first to feature
events at Fleming Field, including the chance to
look at antique or unusual aircraft such as the
Blue Breezy below. This year the airport open
house will be held June 29 from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. Aircraft enthusiasts of all ages are invited
to come out and get hands-on with planes and
equipment, fly radio-controlled models, tour
hangars and even take rides in vintage planes
and helicopters.
Kaposia Days 2013 Page 8
Kaposia Days brought in about 12
softball teams. Nowadays, Rakness
can expect the 64 openings for
mens teams and the 36 for womens
teams to fill up a month in advance,
making the three-day, three-park
(Veterans, McMorrow and Harmon
Fields) tournament the second larg-
est in the state, according to festival
organizers.
Basically, the tournament was
started to keep people in town this
weekend, explains Rakness, the
former manager of the Wakota Civic
Arena and director of the summer
community softball league.
Through the years, however,
Rakness has seen teams come from
as far away as St. Cloud, Owatanna
and Rochester just to play softball
during Kaposia Days. And all of this
growth has been achieved without
any effort to promote the tourna-
ment or recruit additional teams.
Our tournament for all these
years we dont advertise, we
dont do flyers is all word of
mouth, Rakness says.
Part of the appeal, according to
Rakness, is a tournament structure
that gives teams of all skill levels
from the ultra-competitive to those
just playing for fun a chance to
play multiple games and go deep
into the tournament, which takes
place June 28-30.
They know theyve got a chance
to do something, Rakness says.
Despite all the ambitions and
weeks of practice that many teams
bring into the tournament, no one
puts in more time or effort to ensure
success over the weekend than
Rakness.
Every year, hes made sure to be
on hand for all three days of the
tournament, smoothing out wrinkles
and taking in as many games as he
can. While he admits it can get to
be a long weekend, Rakness says
he never gets tired of watching the
families that come out to cheer and
play each year.
And for Rakness, a longtime
player himself who had to hang up
his cleats after recent hip and knee
replacements, the Kaposia Days
tournament is a welcome chance to
hear the crack of the bat and the
thud of the ball landing in a well-
placed glove.
Its nice to be still involved with
it, Rakness says. Im still watching
these teams have fun.

The classic car show brought many
interesting cars to the 2012 Kaposia
Days, such as the stellar 1973 Plymouth
Barracuda at right or the candy-apple
Chevy pickup below. The car show,
which this year will be held in the South
St. Paul High School parking lot June
29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is an annual
favorite at Kaposia Days. The broad
and varied display of vehicles offers
something for all ages and levels of
expertise, from the longtime collector
to those still playing with the mini die-
cast versions of the cars.

It starts with sheer excitement: for the young women
who worked so hard to become South St. Paul Royalty,
the first few moments under the tiara can be some of the
most thrilling to date.
But for all the work they put in prior to taking their
titles, the true transformation to royalty comes in the
year after, as the newly crowned representatives of South
St. Paul dedicate themselves to public appearances
around town, volunteer work and traveling to other cit-
ies to serve as ambassadors. If you think thats easy, just
take a moment to ask the 2012 Royalty Queen Anna
Lavigne, Princess Bethany Bobzin and Princess Katie Ray
about their social schedule for the past 12 months
(and take a moment to congratulate them on a job well
done while youre at it.)
With bittersweet pangs and perhaps a small sense
of relief, the 2012 Royalty will pass on the joys and
responsibilities of their roles onto a new trio at the
Royal Coronation at the South St. Paul High School
Auditorium Saturday, June 29, at 7 p.m.
Come out to show support for the outgoing royalty
and support for the new, and rest easy that South St.
Paul will always be well represented.
Kaposia Days 2013 Page 12
The event debuted last year to great
acclaim, and Griffith says it immediately
caught the attention of Kaposia volun-
teer staff.
Right after it was done, they said
Can that be a Kaposia Days event?
Griffith recalls.
The tournament pits 16 teams of five
to seven members against each other
with 100 balloons per team. The last
team with a dry member standing wins.
And because staying dry on a hot June
day may not seem like winning, Griffith
says there will be around 4,000 balloons
ready to go so there will be plenty of
extras for a no-holds-barred free-for-
all after the tournament. Trophies are
awarded for first- and second-place teams
in the tournament, as well as for the Best
Team Name and Best Team Costumes.

Kaposia Days from year to year, but
theres one particular event that single-
handedly anchors the festival: the
Grande Parade, which gives generations
a chance to gather each year and take in
the display of civic organizations, enter-
tainers, businesses, schools and more
that make up the extended South St.
Paul community.
This year the parade will take place
June 28, starting at Third Street on 12th
Avenue at 6:30 p.m. and rolling down
12th Avenue to Southview Boulevard,
turn east on Southview to Fifth Avenue,
then south on Fifth to Eighth Street.
(For those hoping to set up in the
ideal viewing location, a complete map
of the route is available at kaposiadays.
org.)
This year marks Tim Simplots sixth
year directing the Kaposia Days parade.
Simplot, a South St. Paul native, brings
extensive know-how to this parade,
having worked on numerous parades
throughout the state, including the
Winter Carnival and Grand Old Days
parades in St. Paul for the last 15 years.
I just love being behind the scenes
and having fun with people, Simplot
explains.
But despite the number and size
of the other parades hes worked on,
Simplot insists theres something special
about his hometown parade.
It by far has the most community
feel of any parade that Ive been a part
of, Simplot says. When Im out there
at eight in the morning, people have
already put their chairs out.
Simplot says one request he heard
after last years parade was for more
marching bands not an easy problem
to solve when schools out and parade
season is at its height. Still, Simplot
managed to bring back the Henry Sibley
marching band after an absence last
year, which joins the perennial South
St. Paul High School band.
The South St. Paul Mens Chorus
will collectively fill the Grand Marshal
duties at this years Grande Parade.
The group, which comprises residents
from around the region performing
everything from show tunes to gospel,
is celebrating its 70th anniversary. This
years Super Senior will be Harold Red
Leonard, founder of Fury Motors.
Simplot says there will be plenty of
reasons to come to this years parade,
including stunt motorcycle riders, 15
royalty floats and enough candy to last
until Halloween.
Youll never seen more candy given
out than at the Kaposia Day parade,
Simplot says. Its amazing. Kids show
up with pillowcases. Ive never seen that
before.
