Thesis and argumentation

Take the top 6 events of church history from everything that we covered this semester
(yes it is a lot) and set forth a strong, clear argument answering this question: “Why
should Christians study Church History?”

Topics may include:

• Monasticism (Benedictine, Dominican, Franciscan, Augustinian, and Jesuit)
• The Holy Roman Empire
• The Reformation (how did it reform the church)
• Calvinism
• Reformed Theology
• Theological Liberalism (the social gospel)
• Council of Nicea
• Destruction of Jerusalem (Bar Khokba rebellion)
• The Great Schism
• Carolingian Renaissance
• Scholasticism
• Constantineʼs Conversion
• Islam
• Iconoclasm
• Puritanism
• The Papacy
• The Crusades

To properly answer the question, “Why should Christians study Church History,” one
must include (1) relevant data from class lectures and textbook(s), (2) important people
and their ideas, and (3) the relevance of those ideas and people to your life today. Why
is Church History important? How does Church History build you up in Christ? How
does it teach you the gospel? How are you encouraged to defend your faith? What do
you learn about Christianity in general? How are we to live in this world? All of these
questions have rich answers in the material taught this entire semester.
