By Kris Lancaster(Lenexa, Kan., June 24, 2013) - EPA hosted a green streetdesign workshop and meetings June 18-19, 2013 that willprovide Joplin, Mo., with technical assistance to consider“green complete street” eatures or the city’s 20th StreetCorridor rom Main Street to Highview Avenue. Beorethe workshops, EPA and city sta conducted a walkingtour o the 20th Street Corridor on June 18 to dis-cuss green options that support vibrant and healthy neighborhoods.Te workshops and public meetings were held tostimulate ideas and conversations based on streetmanagement strategies, with an emphasis on dem-onstrated results that have worked in other com-munities.A green complete street can be saely used by pedestrians, cyclists, transit and cars and man-ages stormwater in an environmentally appropri-ate manner. Te 20th Street Corridor is presently primarily used only by automobiles.Features and options discussed included widening

Greeninrastructure eatures suchas rain gardens, permeablepavement and the use o na-tive plants help to minimizestormwater runo whileremoving pollutants. Teintent is to manage stormwa-ter through environmentally benecial practices, whichcan divert stormwater intothe ground or store it oruture use.Visuals were displayed at themeetings o initial designschematics and descriptionso street design options. EPAand its contractors SRA andHDR provided examples o green street designs rom other communities,trends and direct input or nal design plans.Te ocus o the project is the development o asustainable streetscape plan or a two-mile seg-ment o 20th Street rom Main Street to Highview Avenue. ing the 2011 tornado and is a ocus o redevelop-ment eorts by the city.Joplin has embraced sustainable developmentthrough the eorts o the Citizens’ Advisory Recovery eam and other local stakeholders andmuch o this technical assistance takes these eortsinto consideration.EPA is partnering with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the City o Joplin and theollowing design rms SRA and HDR to supportthe overall mission o long-term community re-covery afer the tornado. Also, a variety o individ-uals have been invited to be involved in this projectincluding local builders, bankers, engineers, real-tors, residents, city council, neighborhood groups,property owners, business owners and architects.Afer the workshop and public meetings, EPA andits contractors, SRA and HDR, will provide recom-mendations to the City o Joplin or redesign o the20th Street Corridor to have it become an attraction orbusiness development.
