In 2005 I moved to India to learn some of the more advanced practices of YogaPsychology and Yoga Therapy and I am now working to promote thescience of yoga from the Indian traditions with the help of the TureyaFoundation. I am a certified yoga teacher and yoga therapist and I ama major of Psychology from the University of Denver and I amworking to complete my PhD in India. I hope you find the followingarticle an encouragement to learn more about the Yogic Tradition. If you have any questions regarding yoga, you can find us on our website at:www.tureya.org
Yoga for Beginners: Where do I start?
How does yoga compare to regular exercise?
Before you reach for your toes, make sure you have taken the right steps toprepare yourself for yoga. The yogic practices are very dynamic and create alot of changes in the body that are outside the limits of a normal lifestyle, soyou must take the right precautions to avoid injury or unnecessary strain.

For a lot of people who are just starting to learn yoga, they find that they arebending their bodies and minds in a whole new way. This is great because itcan lead you directly to a new level of physical health that you had neverexperienced before. But you need to make sure you are learning the rightway. Now I know that most of you have done some exercise training before, andfor some of you it has played a very important role in your daily lives. Buthow often do you stretch really stretch your muscles? In most forms of exercise the focus is on strength training and weight loss; we will devote 5 or10 minutes to stretching and the rest of the hour is spent running, biking, swimming…whatever. But in yoga we are using a much more dynamicpractice that tones the muscles while simultaneously stretching them. Thisnot only makes the muscles more elastic, but it also gives your muscles moreendurance, or the ability to do more exercise without your muscles gettingfatigued.Another advantage of the yoga poses is that they tone the organs in ourbody. This in turn helps to increase our metabolic process, increase theproductivity of our digestion, and makes our circulatory system run moreefficiently, taking the strain off of our heart. If you suffer from a long termdigestive problem, or have excess fat on your body, yoga will help you findgood health in a much smaller amount of time than other physical exercisessimply because of its dynamics. So now that you have a better idea of why we practice yoga for the body, let’s talk about how we practice. In yoga we stretch, twist, strengthen, andtone (STST) the entire body all depending upon which asana we arepracticing. Some practices can do all four things at the same time; stretchingthe legs, strengthening the arms, twisting the spine, and toning the coreregion. In yoga we can even STST because yoga has developedmodifications that really bring the body to its maximum potential.
How can I learn Yoga?
Looking at the whole picture, then, it is important that we know what we aredoing and how to do it properly so we do not make mistakes. Learning thewrong skills in the beginning can lead you to learning bad practices whichyou will need to go back to the basics to correct. You body is really importantto you isn’t it? Without it what can you do? We need it to do everything, and
