pon arriving at a mas-sive estate in GraniteBay for a story on animpressive landscaping feat by Bushnell Gardens(see story, page 30), I fig-ured I’d have to later tweeta photo with a witty quiplike, “I’m now a home-owner!” Or, “Congrats tome, I made an offer!” A little humor does wonders in alleviating the stark realization thatI will never in this life —nor any other reincarna-tion that may follow —be able to afford such amagnificent house. Notthat I necessarily wantto: I tend to gravitate to- ward compact spaces.Still, I can’t help butexperience a minor boutof jealousy laying my eyes on, and oftentimesactually entering throughthe impressively largefront doors, some of thegrand houses that popu-late Granite Bay.My mom pounded in-to my sister and me theidea that home owner-ship, if done right, isimportant — to one’s per-sonal finances, stability and most importantly toneighborhoods, as peo-ple who own their housesusually feel more invest-ed in the community in which they live. Andthat’s better for all of us.I’m happy living in my comfortable 1,100-square-foot house, complete withnever-ending interiorimprovements and exteri-or weed pulling. All the fix-es and frustrations beat years of living in apart-ments and rented roomsin properties owned by others. Don’t get me start-ed on that room in a Wal-nut Creek condo I paid$650 a month for, earning me the privilege to live with an owner who pos-sessed a remarkably deepaffinity for rules — for meto follow.I may no longer havethe same freedom to justpick up and go that I hadliving in rentals, but now Ihave a profound sense of accomplishment every day I wake up in my very own home.
