Cultural Center of Batahola Norte
Mothers’ Voices
Students share their stories
The Cultural Center of Batahola Norte offers a space for culture, education and training for people in the poor neighborhoods of Managua. Our work focuses especially on the women and children who most bear the weight of social and economic injustice, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and restoring hope in a better tomorrow.Since 1983 we have empowered thousands of adults and children to defend their rights, finish their schooling, and develop new sources of income.

* Parenting School * Scholarship Program *
“My two daughters, Stephanie (12) and Faviola (16)have been scholarship students at the Center for fiveyears. I’m a stay-at-home mom and was only ableto study up to 10th grade. I earn money by washingand ironing clothes for other people. I participateat the Center in the Parenting School. I love tibecause we play games and have fun together, andthe psychologist talks with us about topics like howto raise your children without violence. Before Iused to spank my daughters and yell at them whenthey misbehaved, but I have learned to havepatience, and that yelling at children only makesthem more rebellious. Using physical or verbal withchildren a
f
ects them profoundly.
“Now we have more harmony in our family,we have better communication because together we have learned how to express ourselves and deal with conflict peacefully,”
I’m so grateful for the Center and I think all of usparents must help out. I volunteer with a group of mothers to make soy milk and sandwiches for theprimary school scholarship students every week,because many children come to the Center withouthaving eaten in the morning. It’s a small thing wecan do to give back and help each other out asparents.”
