TRAIT THEORY

What Type of Person Makes a Good Leader? Leader posses certain key personality traits which identify them as natural leaders. Leaders are born, not made. People inherit certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership.

BEHAVIORAL THEORY
What Does a Good Leader Do? The style approach to leadership It focuses on the behavior of the leader and what leaders do and how they act. A leader behavior is the best predictor of his leadership influences Leaders are made, not born. People can learn to become leaders through teaching and observation.

SITUATIONAL THEORY
Situational theory propose that leaders choose the best course of action based upon situational variables. Instead of using just one style, successful leaders should change their leadership styles based on the maturity of the people they're leading and the details of the task.

LEADERSHIP STYLES
Telling (S1) Leaders tell their people exactly what to do, and how to do it. Selling (S2) Leaders still provide information and direction, but there's more communication with followers. Leaders "sell" their message to get the team on board.

LEADERSHIP STYLES
Participating (S3) Leaders focus more on the relationship and less on direction. The leader works with the team, and shares decisionmaking responsibilities. Delegating (S4) Leaders pass most of the responsibility onto the follower or group. The leaders still monitor progress, but they're less involved in decisions.

MOTIVATIONAL THEORY
Motivation is whatever influences our choices and creates direction, intensity, and persistence in our behavior. Management style is strongly influenced by your beliefs and assumptions about what motivates members of your team

THEORY X
Theory X assumes that employees are naturally unmotivated and dislike working, and this encourages an authoritarian style of management.

THEORY Y
Theory Y expounds a participative style of management that is de-centralized. It assumes that employees are happy to work, are selfmotivated and creative, and enjoy working with greater responsibility.
