URBANAPARTHEID
A report on the status of minority affairs in the Greater New Haven area
Prepared by the Greater New Haven Branch of the NAACP

THE MEANING OFAPARTHEID
Apartheid is any policy or practice of separating or segregating groups. It wasan official policy formerly practiced in South Africa against non-whites. Nelson Mandelaled a broad-based effort to eventually endthe practice of apartheid in 1990s. We chosethe term “Urban Apartheid” as the title of thisreport because low-income people of color in Americas urban areas, including the GreaterNew Haven metropolitan area, continue tobe separated from the country’s social andeconomic mainstream in part as a directresult of current local, regional, state, andnational policies.
Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.I have cherished the idea of a democratic an free society in which all persons live togethein harmony and with equal opportunities.” -Nelson Mandela
