Inlet and exhaust valves

Position of valves in a diesel engine

Inlet and exhaust valves are housed in the cylinder head which closes the top of the engine cylinder.

Exhaust valves open against high pressures of the exhaust gases at the end of the exhaust stroke that is why they are usually designed to be of smaller diameter than the inlet valves.
Exhaust valves can cause thermal problems so efficient cooling is very important (it is easier to cool a smaller valve).

Parts of an exhaust valve:

Spring (opruga) Cage (kuite) Guide (vodilica) Stem, spindle (vreteno) Vanes (lopatice) Head (glava, tanjur ventila) Seat (sjedite)
