What is hierarchy of needs theory?


This theory is a classical depiction of human motivation. individuals are motivated by unsatisfied needs. As each of these needs is significantly satisfied, it drives and forces the next need to emerge.

PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
air food drink shelter warmth sex sleep etc

These needs are the most basic and instinctive needs

SAFETY NEEDS
protection security order law limits stability

Security needs are important for survival, but they are not as demanding as the physiological needs.

SOCIAL NEEDS
Maslow family described these affection needs as less relationships basic than work group physiological and security needs

ESTEEM NEEDS
achievement These include the status need for things that responsibility reflect on self reputation

esteem, personal worth, social recognition, and accomplishment.

SELF-ACTUALIZATION
personal growth fulfillment

Self-actualizing people are selfaware, concerned with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others, and interested fulfilling their potential.

Two types of needs: D-needs & B-Needs

D-needs (Deficiency needs) - needs that arise due to deprivation B-needs (Being needs) - also called Growth needs. - part of persons desire to growth

RELEVANCE TO TODAYS WORK ENVIRONMENT it remains fundamentally helpful and


applicable for understanding, explaining and handling many behavior situations. helps the managers to provide the right financial and non-financial motivation to their employees. overall helps to increase the efficiency, productivity and profitability of the organization.
