La historia empieza con Holly Kennedy y Gerry un joven matrimonio que discute la posibilidad de tener un hijo, debido a la presin que ejerce en ellos la madre de Holly, pero no logran llegar a un acuerdo debid a que _____ no esta muy convencido de tener un hijo. Al poco tiempo, Gerry fallece a causa de un tumor cerebral, del cual holly no tiene conocimiento, ella se encarga de disear la urna en la cual depositan las cenizas de Gerry y de organizarle un funeral tal cual el ubiera querido. Holly queda muy afectada por la muerte de su esposo, y se aisla en su departamento por algunas semanas, sin tener contacto con amigos ni familiares; al llegar el cumpleaos numero 30 de Holly, la madre y los amigos la vicitan y la encuentran en muy mala condiciones; es ah donde empieza todo, llega un granpaquete para ella con un pastel mandado porGerry junto a una grabacin donde le deca que saliera a divertirse, esto tiene como resultado una gran borrachera y que se tenga que quedar a dormir en casa de su mama. Al siguiente da recibe otra carta donde le deca que comprara ropa nueva la iba a hacer falta y esperara la prxima carta. Con el paso del tiempo ella empieza a salir de su encierro y comienza a trabajar, encuentra en que distraerse y empieza a crear diseos de zapatos; en el transcurso de todo ese tiempo. Llega la primavera y recibe otra carta dicindole que regresa al karaoke donde una vez haban estado; y empieza una bonita amistad con Daniel un empleado en el bar de su mama. A los pocos das llega una entrega de la tintorera junto con otra carta pagada a una chamarra de cuero, y saca todo lo perteneciente a Gerry del departamento con ayuda de Daniel. Verano, desesperada por la prxima carta espera al cartero, esta la lleva a una agencia de viajes; Gerry le prepara un viaje a Irlanda su pas de nacimiento, junto a sus amigas Denisse y Sharon, al llegar a irlanda estaba todo preparado; en la carta a Sharon les siguiente que vayan de pesca y en la de Denisse a dilans taberna. Holly inicia una buena amistad con William, quien resulta ser uno de los mejores amigos de la juventud de su difunto marido Gerry, y al mismo tiempo inician una corta relacin la cual solo dura la temporada vacacional, pero ella promete regresar en algn momento. Holly regresa a su casa a continuar con su vida, hasta que le llega la ultima carta, en la cual Gerry le dice que esa ser la ltima carta que resivira de el, le confianza que la madre de holly es quien le ayudo a llevar a cabo todo el plan y que lo hiso por que el sabia como actuaria ella al faltar el, y pens en la manera de ayudarla a separar ese vinculo tan fuerte que haba entre ellos, ella de esta manera logro continuar con su vida.
