ELLSWORTH AFB, S.D. – The South Dakota Air and Space Museum’s 25
th
Anniversaryand Visitor Appreciation Day is scheduled for May 19. The museum will open at 9 a.m.and admission is free.Some of the events scheduled include displays by the Black Hills Scale Model Club, afree drawing for a 20-inch TV/DVD/VCR combo and bus tours of Ellsworth are on salefor $1 instead of the normal price of $6.The tour includes a visit to a full scale Minuteman II missile silo.The aircraft on display at the museum range from pre-World War II to Ellsworth’s currentaircraft, the B-1.Some of the most noteworthy aircraft include a B-25 used by General, and later President, Eisenhower and Ellsworth’s greatest restoration – a B-29 Superfortress.The Superfortress was actually transported to Ellsworth on seven flatbed trucks before itwas put together for display.Inside the museum are a number of displays to include a B-1 flight simulator, a security police display, numerous displays from the nation’s wars and a display dedicated to theStratobowl balloon launch.Free gliders and souvenirs are available for children until supplies run out.For further details, please call the South Dakota Air and Space Museum at 385-5188 or 28

Ellsworth Open House

ELLSWORTH AFB, S.D. – A free to the public open house event is scheduled for June23 at Ellsworth Air Force Base.This year’s open house is centered on a bomber heritage theme.“I cordially invite all of our neighbors in surrounding communities to come out and spendthe day with us,” said Col. Jeffry Smith, 28th Bomb Wing commander. “This will truly bea fine display of our Nation’s airpower as well as give our friends outside Ellsworth’sgates a chance to meet some of the professional men and women that comprise our greatAir Force.”The open house will feature static displays including the A-10 Thunderbolt, B-2 Spirit, B-52 Stratofortress and, of course, Ellsworth’s own B-1 Lancer.Other static displays are being worked and will be announced as they are added to theevent schedule.“We’re in the process of fine tuning the events and entertainment,” said Maj. DouglasBodine, Ellsworth’s open house project officer. “But, I can tell you this will be a worldclass event. I think everyone who attends will leave here with a great appreciation of America’s bomber heritage and our present bomber fleet.”Other features of the open house are scheduled to include a Kid’s Zone, vendors andworking demonstrations by Ellsworth’s Airmen in their specialized career fields.More details will be released as they become available.

ELLSWORTH OPEN HOUSE EVENT UPDATE
Events continue to solidify for Ellsworth’s open house scheduled for June 23rd here.Col. Bruce Emig, 28th Bomb Wing vice -commander, provided a few details on one of the featured events visitors can expect.“One of the events we’re planning is a B-1, low-altitude airfield attack,” said ColonelEmig.Colonel Emig said, as a member of the B-1 flying community, he knows this facet of theopen house will highlight some of the extraordinary capabilities of Ellsworth’s Lancer bombers.“The B-1 was originally designed as a low-level bomber, and it’s absolutely impressive inthis role,” he said. “If you haven’t seen it before, it’s awesome to see this big jet sweepits wings back and fly in low and fast over a target.“I’m looking forward to showcasing it to our visitors this year,” he added.Other aerial events in the works include an A-10 Warthog demonstration and a bomber heritage flyby over the airfield.Other details will be released by 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs as they becomeavailable.
