OHIO CROP WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS
 The average temperature for the State was 71.4 degrees, 0.1degrees below normal for the week ending Sunday, August19, 2007. Precipitation averaged 0.53 inches, 0.29 inchesbelow normal. There were 128 modified growing degreedays, 20 modified degree days below normal.Reporters rated 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork during theseven-day period ending Friday, August 17, 2007. Topsoilmoisture was rated 17 percent very short, 34 percent short,47 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.

FIELD ACTIVITIES AND CROP PROGRESS WEEKENDING SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 2007
Last week had slightly less than six days favorable for fieldwork. Field activities for this past week included cuttingand baling hay, and the harvesting of corn silage, sweetcorn, processing and fresh market tomatoes, melons,squash, potatoes, cucumbers, and green peppers. Otherfield activities for the week included: manure hauling,spreading fertilizer, installation of drainage tile, tillage of winter wheat fields, mowing weeds, scouting, and attendinglocal fairs. Spider mites and aphids reported in theNorthwest and West Central district soybean fields.As of Sunday August 19
soybeans
dropping leaves were at1 percent, compared to 1 percent last year and the five-yearaverage.
Corn
in dough was at 76 percent, almost the sameas last year and four days ahead of the five-year average.Corn dented was at 24 percent, one day ahead of last yearand four days ahead of the five-year average. Corn acreagerated mature was at 1 percent. Corn silage harvested was at3 percent, compared to 4 percent last year and 3 percent forthe five-year average.
Cucumbers
harvested were at 57percent, compared to 51 percent last year and the five-yearaverage.
Potatoes
harvested were at 16 percent, the same aslast year, but six days behind the five-year average.
Processing tomatoes
were at 10 percent, compared to 10percent last year and 9 percent for the five-year average.Summer
apples
harvested were at 72 percent, compared to68 percent last year and 71 percent for the five-yearaverage. Sixty-five percent of the
peach
acreage has beenharvested, compared to 75 percent last year and 70 percentfor the five-year average.The third cutting of 
alfalfa hay
was reported at 78 percentcomplete, compared to 72 percent last year and 51 percentfor the five-year average. The forth cutting of 
alfalfa hay
 was reported at 7 percent complete, compared to 5 percentlast year and 3 percent for the five-year average. Thesecond cutting of 
other hay
was reported at 90 percentcomplete, compared to 91 percent last year and 83 percentfor the five-year average. The third cutting of other haywas reported at 25 percent complete, compared to 21percent last year and 22 percent for the five-year average.
CROP AND LIVESTOCK CONDITION
 Sixty-five percent of the corn acreage was in fair-to-goodcondition, unchanged from last week. Soybean acreage was67 percent in fair-to-good condition, also unchanged fromlast week. Hay acreage was rated at 53 percent in fair-to-good condition, up 5 percentage points from last week.Pasture was rated at 47 percent in fair-to-good condition,compared to 45 percent last week. Pastures are improvingwith recent cooler temperatures and rain.
