Especial attention has also been paid to the presentvernacular of the country, in which the writer has dis-covered many Hebrew names scarcely changed in form.So far the work may lay claim to novelty. Xor is itin other respects a compilation. In the held of criticalresearch the writer has carefully referred to the higliestand latest authorities, while among older writers he hashad such predecessors as Bochart and Olav. Celsius, authorsinaccessible to English readers, but to whose massivelearning and colossal laboui-s he is deeply indebted..The main object of the present volume has been toillustrate, not technically, but popularly, every allusionto atural History in the Holy Scripture, by the actualcondition of the country, and by the character oi itsexisting products, zoological and botanical.For this -special purpose, the writer spent nearly ayear in the Holy Land in 1863-4, accompanied bybotanical and zoological collectors,* and made extensivecollections in every branch of atural History.
