Specifically, we address the (1) scope of public and private telemedicineinvestments; (2) telemedicine strategies among the Department of Defense, other federalagencies, and the private sector; (3) potential benefits that the public and private sectors may yield from telemedicine initiatives; and (4) barriers facing telemedicine implementation. Ourrecommendations are designed to help move federal departments and agencies toward thegoals and objectives as stated in the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993.We are sending copies of this report to the Office of the Vice President; the Secretaries of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Health and Human Services, the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force;the Director, Office of Management and Budget; appropriate congressional committees; andother interested parties.
