In July, as summer camp offerings wind down, don't forget to sign up your future athlete for a robust fall athletics experience. This year, St. Andrews Parks & Playground is not only offering standard fall sports like football and soccer, but also fall baseball and softball, cheerleading, and for the fleeter of foot (or those who want to get that way) great programs in both cross-country and track & field. Tennis lessons, clinics, and leagues are always offered year-round. Check out the website (standrewsparks.com) for deadlines, starting dates, prices, and more. Residents of the St. Andrews Public Service District get reduced prices on some programs, but everyone gets the same level of instruction, safety, healthiness, and fun. (Insider Tip: Its crucial to get you kids name on the lists early, since demand is always high, and no one wants to pay a late fee.)

JULY - If you thought June was hot, wait till the fireworks hit on the 4th! Typically the hottest month, sweat running down your back, this kind of haze and scorching heat can be oppressing to man and beast. A great, refreshing beer is Westbrook Brewing Companys White Thai witbier. The lemongrass and ginger are a nice twist to this dry and crisp summer ale.

In Italian, Paisano is slang for compatriot or friend. Owners nick Skover and mark Slater were true Paisans long before they opened their first pizzeria. The two best friends had long shared a passion for eating, drinking, and making pizzas. When they decided to hang out their shingle on James Island in 2009 Paisanos Pizza Grill quickly became a neighborhood favorite. In a part of town that was littered with chain pizza shops, Paisanos earned a reputation for making delicious pies from fresh ingredients and bubbling cheese on a homemade crust!

earlier this year Skover and Slater opened their second location in West Ashley. Their presence on Sam Rittenberg was a welcomed site, finally giving our part of town the same quality pizzas, subs, salads, and wings that our neighbors south of the Stono have been enjoying for years.

Paisano's Pizza Grill is a place to bring your family or to meet up with a couple of friends after work. The friendly employees create an inviting atmosphere that make you feel like you're old friends or as they like to call you, Paisans. Insider Tip: Paisanos has the best dang blue cheese in all of Charleston maybe the world.

Prune - Cut off brown hydrangea blooms and shape if too leggy: up to 1/3 of the height can be removed. It is also a good time to thin the plant and remove some of the older canes. Maintenance - Cut back summer annuals that have become too leggy and fertilize well with a liquid fertilizer. Deadhead your perennials and roses to prolong bloom time. AUGUST - Really, this heat, humidity, sweat and
swelter has gone on for long enough, hasnt it? A need for a revitalizing beverage is necessary even while standing near the back door, much less mowing the lawn. A lighter, dry, balanced and extremely clean ale is the right choice for the hottest of the hot. Some of the cleanest beers out there, yet still flavorful; Coast Brewing Companys 32/50 Kolsch is your hot weather companion.

much like a blindside hit from Jadeveon Clowney, The Roost burst on to the West Ashley bar scene two years ago with such an explosive power that you just had to stand up and applaud the effort. But converting a flooring showroom into the nicest sports bar in the Lowcountry was no small feat. Longtime F&B veterans Ralph Capasso, Reay Roundtree, and Dennis Schaffer took on the project with gusto and didnt cut any corners. The salvaged wood walls, the dozens of widescreen TVs, the nicest bathrooms youll ever see in a bar, a beer selection that even a beer snob can respect, and a friendly staff are just some of what makes The Roost different than youre run-of-the mill sports bar. In fact, The Roost transcends the sports bar label and is a popular hangout even when theres not a sporting event on the tube. Theres live music several nights a week and The Roost boasts a menu that goes far beyond your standard bar fare, with such highlights as tuna tacos, handmade burgers, a French dip sandwich, and some of the best Buffalo wings around. Sunday brunch is also a big hit at The Roost. However, its Saturdays in the fall when The Roost really gets crowing. Sure the name suggests its a Gamecocks bar, but don't worry Clemson fans, Tigers are also well represented as is every team, whoever yours may be. Insider Tip: Try the cleverly-named Byrnes Downs sauce on your wings. But be warned Theyre hot! But worth the burn.

September 26, 1873
On this date the Graham AME church at the corner of Wappoo Road and Highway 61 was legally recorded at the Charleston County courthouse in Book K, page 148. Originally the church had been called Stockhill and was located near Old Town. The transfer of two acres of land in 1867 from Edward and Harriet H. Frost made the move to this location possible.

BEERSNOB

SEPTEMBER - so this is what fall feels like? Ok, a few cooler evenings and some nice breezes are extremely welcome. Its time to ease into the malts this time of year, and move away from the lighter, golden beers of summer. There is nothing more American and perfect for fall than an amber ale; nearly every brewery has one. The classic Charleston malt-leaning, red-brown, easy-going ale is Amber from Palmetto Brewing Company.

October 22, 1943
The Exchange Club of St. Andrews Parish decided to hold a Celebration of Progress event in celebration of the water main completion to the Parish. Water service to this area would allow for the continued growth in the Parish. The program for this event details not only the history of St. Andrews Parish but also the progress of the community as it changed from an agrarian lifestyle to the suburban one that we love today. That afternoon was filled with band concerts, a football game, an evening program of speeches and the Drawing of Lucky Numbers for War Bonds.

The list of things d.d. Peckers makes by hand is long. Real long. So long that they make a DeSean Jackson kick return look easy. Those 25 sauces, dressing their mongo-sized wings? Handmade. French fries and potato chips? Hand-cut and homemade in-house. The ribs? Yes, thats a special handmade magic dust coating them, and the wings, if you so desire. What about the soups, dressings, desserts, and even the shrimp and grits? Yep, yes, you got it, yeppers, uh-huh. All handmade from scratch in the busy, friendly kitchen. even the pizza dough we use is made that day and brought in from Ashley Bakery right behind us, says owner (head Pecker) Derek Harris. About the only thing not made from scratch at d.d. peckers' are the authentic Amoroso Bakery rolls brought in from Philadelphia. Because, when you got to have a Philly Cheesesteak (with, without, whiz or no whiz), nothing but the best will do. Somethings always up at Peckers, says Harris. Theres live music, just under a million television screens, and even live trivia one night a week. Harris says his staff is killing themselves in order to be the kind of fun neighborhood joint where everyone, from the mechanics at the nearby car dealerships to tennis-playing blues singers to exterminators and even reporters, can have a good time. Insider Tip: The daily blue-plate is to die for, especially Thursdays two fried pork chops with sides of macaroni and cheese, and fried okra with a sweet tea. Ahem. Or so weve heard.

Rene Ravenel surveyed the Crafts Tract for J. M. Harrison. The property was over 330 acres and included a 1845 building located along the marsh of the Ashley River. Harrison converted this structure, called a Dance Hall by family members, into his home. Also noted on the map was an Old Fort at the bend in the Public Road near the approach to the New Bridge. Harrison farmed this land for many years before he sold parcels for the development of the neighborhoods of Moreland, Westwood and Byrnes Downs.

NOVEMBER - leaves are fallin all around. Fires begin burning in stoves and in backyards. Pull out the sweaters and the hearty soups. The smoky smell, the cold nights, the darker, shorter days beg for Porter. Give thanks to England for their amazing dark beer. A tasty twist on the style is the American porter, and an even further bend is the addition of spicy malt in Riverdog Brewing Companys Chocolate Rye Porter.

School officials accepted the construction bid for $109,457 from Kinghorn Building and Supply Company of Beaufort for St. Andrews Elementary School. The property for this school building had been acquired from the estate of James S. Simmons and was located near the then existing neighborhoods of Byrnes Downs and Windermere. Soon South Windermere would be built and the school would be completely surrounded by neighborhoods. V.M. Lomas served as the first principal. In the fall of 1950 13 teachers and 464 students populated this new elementary of the Parish.

GARDENING TIPS
DECEMBER

www.chashortsoc.org

Plant - Plant roses, shrubs, and trees. Maintenance - Mulch azaleas, camellias and roses. Collect soil samples and send to Clemson Extension for analysis. Winter clean up of any perennial or plant that may have been burned by frost or freeze. Observation - Note whether your garden has plenty of winter interest and is attractive for birds. Seedpods left on ornamental grasses can provide both interest and food for the birds. Consider adding a feeder just for sunflower seeds, suet feeders, and mixed seed feeders. Birdbaths should be kept full and clean.

BEERSNOB

DECEMBER - here we are at the end of the year. Welcome winter. So how about a winter welcome? Gatherings, family, food, holidays. Its a time to look back fondly on where we have been and what is yet to come. Many breweries make a special beer just for such occasions. And, although Westbrooks decedent Mexican Cake is not a winter warmer in style, what could be more warming for winter than a 10.5% ABV spiced Russian imperial stout with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks and fresh habanero peppers? This is phenomenal beer, what a way to end a wonderful year?

JANUARY - the first month of the year is typically the coldest. Due to the frigid temps, chances of snow, and bone rattlin winds, the heartiest, strongest, most warming beer is a necessityeven if youre staying in by the old fireplace. Russian Imperial Stout is a great choice, and you cant do much better than Coast Brewing Companys Blackbeerd Imperial Stout-dark, rich, warming and 9.3% ABV.

GARDENING TIPS
JANU ARY

www.chashortsoc.org

Prune - Cut back your nandinas and your hollies. It will help them bush out and be more lush for next year. It will also help to increase your berry production for next winter. While pruning, dont forget your hedges such as podocarpus, viburnum, and ligustrum. While topping them, also take the time to thin them so sunlight can penetrate down into the hedge, making it fuller and denser. Maintenance - If you have not already had your soil tested, do so now. Clean up garden debris and cut back any perennials that might have turned to mush. Inspect your garden tools and sharpen or replace them as needed.sunflower seeds, suet feeders, and mixed seed feeders. Birdbaths should be kept full and clean. Pest Management Note whether your garden has plenty of winter interest and is attractive for birds. Seedpods left on ornamental grasses can provide both interest and food for the birds. Consider adding a feeder just for sunflower seeds, suet feeders, and mixed seed feeders. Birdbaths should be kept full and clean.

January brings a new Year, a new moon, and maybe a new look for you, not to mention theres a new Lava Salon website (lavasalon.com). not sure this funky, fresh hair-cutting joint is just right for you? Simple, just take a virtual 360-degree tour of the joint on its website, and take a gander at all the fun videos the staff has made and posted to the website. Yes, Dirty Hairy, a Clint eastwood-type, who sports a magnum-sized hairdryer, has produced the films. (Their scissors are sharp, and so are their senses of humor.) With all that creativity laying around and splashed on the walls, just imagine what kind of fun they can have crafting a new hairdo for your head, or honing the one youve already got. Insider Tip: Take a stroll out the back door and peruse the chart Gallery of graffiti-bombed paintings adorning the back alley that salon co-owner Geoff Richardson, the unofficial mayor of Avondale, helped curate into existence.

Maintenance - Winter is a good time to inspect your sprinkler and make needed repairs or additions. Empty out planters that did not survive the winter and clean them with one part bleach to nine parts water. Pruning - Valentines Day is the benchmark for pruning your roses. Prune back to 3-5 healthy canes and cut out dead or diseased limbs; remove crossing branches and any branches that are smaller than your pinkie finger. Cut back your ornamental grasses and clean up the debris. You should also run a yard rake or other tined tool through them to make sure all dead material is out of the center.

FEBRUARY - not much warmer than Jan, but a bit of light peeks through the clouds. Still need warmth, but dont want to be totally numbed, and would like a flavor challenge. A Double IPA really suits the season; still big and boozy, but the mega dose of hops will awaken slumbering tastebuds and brighten your belly. Coast Brewing Companys Boy King Imperial India Pale Ale is the right guy for the job.

While not the first bar in the area, Voodoo Tiki Bar & Lounge was really the one that put the Avondale area on the map in terms of nightlife. Owners mike & Jen Kulick live in the neighborhood just behind the strip of business on magnolia Road that has been home to Voodoo since first opening in 2004. So when they decided to start a bar they created a place that they would want to hang out in. The eclectic bar, lined with velvet artwork and lava lamps, is a new Orleans-inspired Tiki bar that serves giant fish bowl tiki drinks and gourmet tacos, like BBQ duck, Baja shrimp, red curry fried chicken, and Bahn mi. In addition to gourmet tacos, Voodoo also offers other non-traditional bar fare, such as Bangkok Street Corn, Ginger-Pork Potstickers, Oxtail Sliders, mikes Famous Duck Club Sliders (the ones that inspired the Duck Club sandwich at the Kulicks other bar, the Tattooed moose, which was featured on the Travel Channels Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives). In addition to great drinks and food, Voodoo also hosts Havana nights, featuring Cuban music and salsa dancing every Sunday night. And starting in February, Jazz night returns the first Tuesday of every month. Voodoo also hosts Charlestons best mardi Gras party every year. Insider Tip: Gourmet tacos are Half-Price every day during Happy Hour 4-7 p.m. and all-day Sunday.

Dedication ceremony for the opening of the St. Andrews Parish Branch Post Office located in Avondale. Thomas A. Croghan, who lived in The Crescent, was named the branch postmaster. In an ad for the Avondale Pharmacy that ran in the August 29, 1943 edition of the News and Courier it was mentioned that the St. Andrews Branch Post Office had reopened in the Pharmacy. One can surmise that the Post Office was located in Avondale Pharmacy until the building was constructed.

MARCH - spring, renewal, and crazy weather. A shot of sun is followed by a late freeze and cold rain. I like to try something a little different, a bit wild and irreverent, much like the crazy March weather. Palmetto Brewing Companys special release Ginger Slap is pretty mad for March. An American Amber ale brewed with Brazillian ginger and cardamom, this beer is spicy and interesting.

march is a busy time around The mellow mushroom Avondale. You could even say its madness! This year marks the third anniversary since the popular pizza joint set up shop in Avondale in what used to be an old movie theatre. every anniversary, The mellow owners Johnny Hudgins, michael Shemtov, and Joshua Broome host a Disco Throw-Back Brunch, featuring 1974 prices (that was the year the first mellow mushroom opened in Atlanta) and guests are encouraged to dress in their finist 70s garb and enjoy the ridiculous deals and have a chance to win free pizza for a year. march is also madness because no one does a bigger push for the nCAA mens Basketball Tournament than The mellow, which not only shows every game on one of their many TVs but they also give away $1,000 to the person who has the best bracket. Besides this seasonal madness its always a fun time at The mellow, whether its taking advantage of their awesome happy hour and 30 beers on tap (more than anyone in West Ashley) or just grabbing some delicious pizza with the family. But The mellow is much more than just pizza, they also offer great sandwiches, an amazing magic mushroom soup, and fresh and healthy salads. Insider Tip: Every month members of the Mellow Mushroom Beer Club vote on a Beer of the Month, which is then available for $3 all month and $2 during Happy Hour.

APRIL

APRIL - spring has really sprung; on occasion its almost hot. Sunny days and showers, you need some balance. To accompany the change in the season, we look for beers with increasingly sharp and vivid flavors, nothing too thin, but more hops, without abandoning the malty sweetness that got us through winter. An American IPA is a great choice, and a bitter yet drinkable option is Westbrook Brewing Companys IPA. At 6.8% ABV, this is no spring session beer, but a big, tasty ale.

Plant - Continue planting annuals and summer/fall blooming perennials. Plant summer-blooming bulbs such as cannas and caladium. Plant seeds of heat loving annuals such as zinnia. Maintenance - Begin deadheading your perennials and roses in order to prolong your bloom time. Continue weeding in the mulched borders and beds. Fertilize - Now is the perfect time to put down a fresh layer of compost. This will feed your shrubs and perennials for summer, help shade their roots, and conserve moisture.

many farm-to-plate restaurants stop with whats on the plate. not, the Glass Onion, where the glass is always full of good spirits and attention to detail.

Yes, everyone knows about the Glass Onions traditional yet eclectic Southern comfort fare with an haute twist. But for those who havent heard, the slow food movement has splashed down at the Glass Onion thanks to its Southern Cocktail menu.

Classic drinks have landed on the mid-scale restaurants menu, fortified with some of the finest handmade and small batch liquors and mixers that owner Sarah OKelley could find.

She will gladly help you source the elegant suppliers, just like the restaurant does with its produce and meats. For those who want to take home the Glass Onion experience, pick up a copy of the restaurants self-published cookbook, Glass Onion Classics.
1219 Savannah Hwy. 225-1717 ilovetheglassonion.com

By self-publishing, the cookbooks price was kept low, ensuring customers an opportunity to recreate some of what they just melted into, from the sublimely easy pimento cheese to the tricks of the trade of roasting a chicken in preparation for amazing chicken salad; its in there.

Insider Tip: Every Tuesday is Fried Chicken Night at the Glass Onion. But make sure you call ahead to reserve your bird, because they will sell out and when its gone, its gone!

The City of Charlestons first commercial radio station, WCSC 1360 (later 1390), aired its first broadcast. Captain Lewis S. Burk and Fred Jordan held the FCC license. They broadcasted from the Francis Marion Hotel and their transmitter was located on property in St. Andrews Parish donated to them by J.M. Harrison. This original transmitter was located approximately near the International House of Pancakes on Savannah Highway. Burk and Harrison were related by marriage. Maybe this facilitated the property donation.

MAY - its not summer yet, friends, so we dont want to get too light and crisp before we have to. Normally I would suggest something in the vein of an all-malt lager or steam ale; great for dinner, a cookout, the boat, or whatever. However, with Holy City Brewing Companys easy drinking, flavorful yet light to medium bodied Pluff Mud Porter, this 5.5% ABV malty ale is made for May!

Who can learn to reproduce a painting in a relaxed evening filled with laughter, good music, and a couple glasses of wine or beer? Anyone can, according to Bottles n Brushes chief executive officer Alyssa maute, who celebrates the West Ashley Bottles & Brushes second anniversary in may. Bottles & Brushes offers classes five nights a week, Tuesday through Saturday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.. (Sunday and mondays are reserved for special parties, corporate retreats, and teambuilding exercises.) You dont know how many times I have heard every day weve been open from someone that they cant paint, that they arent creative, said maute, a James Island gal, now working on her masters degree. But at Bottles and Brushes, we help bring out that creativity. And by the end of the evening, people leave with a piece of art they are proud of and can hang on their wall. Helping to loosen the muse, participants can bring their own bottles, or they can purchase varietals and brews from the fully stocked bar. Kids are welcomed in weeklong summer camps, and on Saturday mornings, and for birthday parties throughout the week. This is an art studio for the non-artist, who wants to get their paint brush wet for the first time, whet their whistle, have a good time, and take home some art. Insider Tip: Once a month, Bottles & Brushes holds a My Best Friend painting class where you can paint your dog or cat. Bottles n Brushes donates $5 to the Charleston Animal Society for every person that attends the class.

According to the History of Building Development at Wappoo Heights compiled by a group of residents known as the History Committee, this was the date of the neighborhoods subdivision on the request of George A. BEERSNOB

JUNE - its official, its summer, and its hot. Without sacrificing flavor, a summer beer needs to be crisp, clean, and cold. Pale ale is hoppy but not too bitter, and generally quite refreshing. And much like the namesake of their year round beer, the recipe for Holy City Brewing Companys Slanted Porch pale ale is ever changing. Those ubiquitous Charleston porches will keep leaning, pick up a Slanted Porch for your summer sitting.

middleton Place once fed rice to the world. With produce sourced at the on-site middleton Place Organic Farm, the middleton Place Restaurant is continuing the tradition on a slightly smaller scale. Southern cuisine served in a cypress-lined dining room surrounded by circa 1741 formal gardens, The middleton Place Restaurant offers one of the most memorable dining experiences in Charleston. The onsite garden sourcing the Lowcountry fare restaurant was recently designated certified organic. That means only natural processes were used in growing 15 different varietals of tomatoes, along with okra, eggplant, sweet corn, onions, squash zucchini pant-pant-pant and a panoply of fresh herbs (six types of mint!). executive Chef Brandon Buck, in-house for the better part of six years and following the traditions of Southern culinary wizard edna Lewis and having worked under executive chefs Craig Deihl and Donald Barickman, imbues the regular menu with the heightened freshness of that garden and its produce. He is aided and abetted by sous chefs Lucas Rhoad and Cheryl Ackland. every Thursday, the garden, located in the back of the 62-acre national Historical Landmark, is harvested and taken over to the restaurant, where its bounty is made manifest in neartly every dish on the menu, especially the Vegetarian Potluck.OK, tongues back in mouths. (Insider Tip: On Wednesdays from Sept. 4 through Oct. 30 Middleton Place Restaurant hosts weekly wine strolls, which is a wonderful way to the see the beautiful Gardens and enjoy some world-class wines for just $20).
