In times of difficulty we turn to Allah, for many the exam period is such a time. This is mostly a
time of stress, headache and a longing to be anywhere/ do anything but work. Du’a is your best
weapon in this time of need, so turn to Allah and trust Him completely.
It's important when making dua to do it in the correct frame of mind. Some may feel it is selfish to ask for things that are only beneficial to them as an individual - this may well be the case - but re-evaluate why you are doing what you are doing. Your intention needs to be pure, and everything you do must be for the sake of Allah and His deen.
Dua is the essence of worship because it expresses our neediness. How is it the very essence of worship?
The sunnah is to raise our hands and ask from Allah swt, in similitude to a humble slave asking from their master. Remember to always start off with Bismillah and Durood (sending peace/salaam to the Prophet).
Also remember you have nowhere else to turn to...except to Allah swt.
This is how it can expresses your neediness - your realisation that Allah swt is Creator and Sustainer and the Shoulder to cry on.
The dua of the tongue is well known, there is more we can add to this,
1) Dua of the state of our neediness, pause and accept the feeling neediness, yearn Allah swt.
e.g. When you are about to start your exam, it doesn’t have to be verbalised dua, but feel the reality that you really and truly NEED Allah!
2) Practical dua of our actions. When we accept the sense of neediness, and then act in the right way, those actions are part of dua,
e.g. In your exam you feel a sense of neediness and then perform the action, start writing. The whole action becomes a dua, but also a statement of faith.
You realise you NEED Allah and realise Allah fulfils needs. Seeking fulfilment of that need, as Allah commanded, by taking the means (revising/taking the exam).
So what should we ask for? The Prophet (saw) said everything! Ask for everything, even the smallest of things, and then take the means to achieve it, i.e. revise. You will find a door will open up between you and your Creator.
Du'a is a weapon of a believer, a pillar of religion, and a light of the heavens and the earth." [al-Hakim]
"Nothing prevents predestination except Du'a, and nothing stretches the age except righteousness." [at-Tirmidhi]
"Do not feel hopeless with Du'a, since nobody is to be annihilated with Du'a." [ibn Hiban]
"If you ask, ask Allah and if you seek help, seek help from Allah." [at Tirmdhi, Ahmad]
"O my servants, were the first of you and last of you, the human of you and jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request from me, and were I to give everyone what they requested, that would not decrease what I have anymore than a needle decreases the sea if put into it." [Sahih Muslim]
And your Lord says: Call on Me; I will answer your (prayers) (Surah Ghafir)
“When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them), I respond to the prayer of every supplicant when he calleth on Me”. (Al-Baqarah: 186).
Allah said in a Hadeeth Qudsi: “O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided. So seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you, are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you. O, My servants, you commit sin by night and by day and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you.” (Muslim).
"The dua of a Muslim for his brother (in Islam) in his absence is readily accepted, an angel is appointed to his side, whenever he makes a beneficial dua for his brother the appointed angel says "aameen and may you also be blessed with the same".[Sahih Muslim]
