Abstract
It does not go without saying that literary scholars examine contemporary lyrics, especially in the Dutch language. This is remarkable, considering the attention literary scholars pay to medieval songbooks, for example.
If modern literature research is limited to traditional highbrow literature, it will lose its relevance and eventually be no more than the archivist of former literary ideas. Moreover, it is not the role of literary research to perpetuate literary views, but to investigate them. Since it has turned out that modern song lyrics play referential, emotive and poetic roles in society, literary scholars should consider it their task to investigate these texts, preferably in cooperation with sociologists and musicologists.
At the heart of this thesis lies the interpretation of lyrics based on a textual analysis. The analysis should clearly show the possible meaning(s) in the text, and how these meaning(s) are brought about by the text. For this reason, a number of textual and contextual aspects are mapped.
The result of this thesis is a general model for the analysis of lyrics, which other researchers, and also music critics can elaborate on. By means of a corpus of Dutch lyrics (by Doe Maar, Spinvis, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig and De Kift) it is shown that the analysis of lyrics can yield (possible) meanings that remain unnoticed when casually listening to the songs.
