Brian Schatz For Senate The Mellman Group, Inc. Hawaii Senate Democratic Primary A Dead Heat July 2, 2013

This analysis represents the findings of a survey of 600 voters representing the likely 2014 Democratic primary electorate who were interviewed by telephone June 26-30, 2013. The study was conducted by live interviewers and utilized a registration-based sample designed to model the likely electorate. Cell phone interviews made up 20% of the sample. The margin of error is +/-4.0% at the 95% level of confidence. The margin of error is higher for subgroups.

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz and Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa are locked in a dead heat in the primary for Hawaiis Senate seat; however, among those who have already had the chance to weigh and measure both candidates, Schatz actually holds a double-digit lead, suggesting that he is already successfully making his case to Hawaii voters. The Democratic Primary Is A Dead Heat The race between Brian Schatz and Colleen Hanabusa is currently a dead heat, with each candidate garnering 37% of the vote. With rounding, Schatz actually holds a 1point lead. The race is tied despite the fact that Hanabusa is known to significantly more voters (86% hard ID) than Schatz (71% hard ID). It is particularly telling however that among the 67% of the electorate that is familiar with both candidates, Schatz actually leads Hanabusa by 13 points (47% Schatz, 34% Hanabusa). Given the chance to weigh and measure both candidates, voters are choosing Schatz over Hanabusa.
