Narma Rajput Tribe

History and Origin Narma Rajputs are Surajbansi/Agnikula Rajputs descendant of Raja Karan. Raja Karan was from Ujjain or Kathiawar. The tribe are descendants of Panhwar Rajputs who ruled Malwa and Ujjain, their famous kings names were Raja Bikramjeet and Raja Bahoj. During the Invasion of Mahmood Ghaznavi they were living in the Haryana area, province of India. Naru Khan 8th descent of Raja Karan accepted Islam and the tribe were named after him; Naru or Narma Rajputs. They were land owner of several villages within Haryana; the chief men of his tribe were known by the title Rai, this title is still used by their descendants presently. Most Narma Rajputs have accepted Islam, some of them remained Hindu or afterwhile become Hindu again. The Panhwars have 34 branches out of them many more estabilished on the name of places, titles, language and person's names like Omtawaar were known as Omta the descendants of Naru became Naruma and then Narma. The Panhwars ruled Kathiawar in Gujarat and some of the areas in Sindh and Punjab, including Kishtwar in Kashmir. The Rajas of Kishtwar were Panhwar Rajputs.

Surajbansi and Chandarbansi Rajput have two main bans; one is Surajbansi and second is Chandarbansi, the third one is Agnikula which came out of these two main bans. Now this is a third bans according to historians, the three Agnikula Rajputs clans Panhwar, Prithaar and Chauhan were Surajbansi and the fourth Agnikula Rajput Clan Solanki was Chandarbansi, this bans was established over 600 years before Christ (BC) in a place called Mount Abu.

Naru and Narma There might be a common ancestory between Naru and Narma, they both claim their ancestor name was Naru accepted Islam and given new name Naru Khan during the invasion of Mahmood Ghaznavi, he lived in Haryana area. Narma claim they are from Surajbansi/Agnikula Panhwar Rajputs ancestory and the Narus from Hoshiarpur say they came from hills and they are Chandarbansi. Narus from Phillaur Jalandhar area claim their ancestor was a Raagbansi Rajput who came from Ayudhya and served under Mahmood Ghaznavi and settled in Phillaur. Third story about Narus say they are from Judhpur/Jaipur and their ancestor was the son of the Raja. There are three different stories about them

which are very complicated. Narma historian and Mirasis say their ancestor name was Naru Khan and Rai Pahre Khan 7th generation from Naru Khan who came from Kethal Haryana area to Gujarat Jhelum district and found two villages Fatehpur and Puran afterwhile Rai Jalal Khan descendant of Rai Pahre Khan relocated to Senyah;Punjan near Noshera Jammu area via Mirpur Malot; some Narma Rajputs relocated to Bagh Poonch of northern area. This indicated that both Naru and Narma were living in Haryana area during the same time, with same ancestor name and head of tribe titles were known as Rai. Still Narma Rajputs chief man is referred to as Rai and these below them are known by the titles of Raja and Rana. Kaithal Narma Rajputs were living in Kaithal district present Haryana province of India, from there they migrated with Rai Pahre Khan and came to Gujrat district (Jhelum).

Fatehpur and Puran Rai Pahre Khan 7th generation from Naru Khan who came from Kaithal of Haryana area to Gujarat district (Jhelum) and founded two villages, Puran and Fatehpur. The Narmas in Gujarat say that they have nine subdivisions: 1. Sadryal 2. Adryal 3. Sambrhyal 4. Haudal 5. Jalali 6. Alimyana 7. Joyal 8. Umral 9. Hassanabdalia. Punjan Punjan is famous for two things: one is for narma Rajputs and the second is the favourite place of Mian Mohammad Baksh (Rahmtullah alai) a Gujjar. Author of the famous book Saif-Ul-Malook, his favourite place that he occassionally visited. The people of Punjan always loved him and wanted him to reside there permanently. He wanted to be buried there after he died but his murshid did not allow this as his murshid wanted him to be buried next to him which is now known as Khari-Sharif, this occurred over 100 years ago. He said to the people of Punjan "I leave for you some of my belonging". His favourite sher was about Punjan he said "Kabar meri je hondi Punjani kalkat gallan kardi, daadhe nal basera hoya Muhammad Baksha jind na mani dhardi".

Narma Rajputs came to Punjan The Narma Rajputs relocated from Fatehpur and Puran (Jhelum) to Senyah, Punjan near Noshera of Jammu area via Mirpur Malot over 300 years ago. Rai Jalal Khan descendant of Rai Pahre Khan came with his tribe, first they came to Malot near Akaalgar. While they were coming they had a clash with the Mangral Rajputs, from there they moved to Senyah, Punjan. While residing in Senyah Punjan there was a local tribe who lived there who realised that they could not fight or defeat Narma Rajputs, they asked Rai Jalal Khan to marry their daughter and he accepted. Their plan was to poison the groom party; a Kenyal Jatt lady heard their ploy to kill them with the poisoned drinks, she did not tell anybody the day groom party was going from Senyah to mount Punjan, she met them halfway and informed Rai Jalal Khan. She told him in Potwari language "Suno Rai Jalala, Pando jatti marya alaa, upar Punjan thele Senyah achan hai gachan nai" (She confirmed that you will come alive, but you will not go back alive). When Rai Jalal Khan heard this he told his tribe members that no one will eat or drink from there without his permission. When they reached there they gave them hospitality with poisoned drinks, Rai Jalal Khan fed this to the dog and it suddenly died. After this he accused them of trying to kill him and the members of his tribe, this caused a fight between them and several people were killed. The defeated tribe left the area, Rai Jalal Khan took control of all of the Punjan area including hundreds of villages including; Mozia Punjan, Mozia Sabazkot, Mozia Thandar, Mozia Haripur, Mozia Khamba, Mozia Davlia Narmah, Mozia Palal Klan, Mozia Palal Khurd, Mozia Prayi Ambhaan, Mozia Darguti Bandli, Mozia Taine, and Mozia Broh. They became the landowners (jhagirdar) of these areas, his three brothers settled in these areas; Lal Khan in Palal, Tandu Khan in Thandar and Kehm Khan in Kambha. The help of the Jatt lady did not go unnoticed and she was rewarded with land and her sons became Pagpayi of Jalal Khan's sons. Rai Jalal Khan had three sons; Rai Baksh Khan, Mirjahan Khan and Khan Asab Khan were the Landowner (jhagirdhar) of Mozia Punjan and other areas.

LT Muzaffar Khan shaheed of Punjan Indian Attack on Keri and Tain. On July 3, 1948 a about 0745 hours, an Indian column of two infantry batalions and a tank squadron, advanced from Jhangar towards Keri and Tain feaures. Keri positions were held by B company under LT Muzaffar Khan, Sher-i-jang 2 bar, while Tain was held by 36 Azad Kashmir. As the Indians came within range, fierce fighting ensured which lasted four and half hours. In the closing hours of the battle Lt Muzaffar Khan, a gallant and fearless leader in combat, fell mortally wounded, He refused evacuation and continued directing the troops till his last breath. The attack was repulsed and the enemy left behind 36 dead and many weapons. The Indians suffered considerable casualties. The dead included enemy 6 commander 50 Para Brigadier Muhammad Usman. Lieutenant Muzaffar Khan was born in Punjan a retired Subedar, when the war started he joined Mujahideen freedom fighters; mostly were ex service men, they were Rajputs, Sudhans and Pathan tribal lashkar, Razakaar (volunteer) and he became area commander Under his command freedom fighters fought bravely several battles in Kaladev, Chai, Mutlasi, Sarya Junger, Choki handan, Taine. He was martyrd in the battle of Keri against heavily equipped Indian regular army supported by air force, artillery, tanks and armed cars. During the war he told is relatives and collegeues that he will be shaheed (marytr) and he wants to buried in Dakhari graveyard in Senyah.

Narmah The Narma Rajputs who settled in this area they combined the villages and gave it their tribe name; Narmah, this area including villages such as Sah, Kaladab and Davlia, Kotian. They invited other tribes to work on their land. The famous Narma from Mozia Narmah was Walait Khan (safaidposh and jhagirdhar).

Narma Rajputs in Bagh Narma Rajputs also live in Bagh district Poonch area who are the descendants of Makar Khan, Sesi Khan and Hira Khan. Makar Khan settled in Chiran and his offspring lives there and Sesi Khan's offspring live in Kuffulghar, whilst Hira Khan's offspring live in Sirawera and Dhoomkot villages. These Narma Rajputs from Fatehpur Puran Jhelum relocated to Bagh Poonch of northern area via Kotli/Narr. Bagh Narma Rajputs hold reputable posts in the Pakistani army, civil administration, politics, and are also involved in agriculture. Politically they are very organised and united, compared to Narmas of Punjan that is why they always elect one member of tribe for AJK assembly, whilst Narmas of Punjan never did.

Narma Rajputs in Kallar Sayidaan and Sudhbadana, District Rawalpindi About thirty to fourty families live in a village called Jochamamdot Tehsil Kallar Sayidaan district Rawalpindi, these Narmas went there from Punjan; General Tikka Khan 7th commander in chief of Pakistan army was from there. Narma Rajputs also live in village Sudhbadana and Narmatokh Kangar teh Gujarkhan district Rawalpindi.

Narma Rajputs in Rajori and Maindar

About 50-60 families live in near Rajori city two villages Jamola and Gurdal Paine; the Jamola Narmas are very famous for wrestling (kushti) and also about fifteen families live in Maindar district Poonch these all areas are in Indian held Kashmir. These Narma Rajputs went there from Punjan and Palal.

Narma Rajputs in Europe, America and Canada In Europe vast number of Narma Rajputs settled in England (UK) within cities of Sheffield, Bradford, Luton, London, Gloucester and other cities. Other countries in Europe such as Germany, Greece, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Holland and Fance. Some of them are settled in America and Canada. These Narma Rajputs came from Punjan, Palal, Broh, Charohi, Senyah, Thandar, Tain and other parts of AK, Pakistan.

Hindu Narma Rajputs Hindu Narma Rajputs of Khamba came with Rai Jalal Khan and settled in Khamba also becoming the landowners (Jaghirdhar) in the area. Khamba fort is in their land and they have lived there until the 1947 independence of India and Pakistan, during this time they migrated to Noshera sector Indian held Kashmir and they are presently based in villages such as Kalsian, Chokiandan, Rajal and Hanjana. The famous people of Hindu Narma Rajputs were Zaildaar Sardar Singh, Numberdhar Indar Singh, Numberdhar Major Singh, Thakur Karnel Singh, Thakur Hakam Singh, Thakur Buldev Singh; all of them have passed away. Thakur Kamal Singh and Thakur Ratan Singh are sons of Thakur Buldev Singh and Thakur Balvir Singh, Thotan Devi son and daughter of Zeldaar Sardar Singh and Chain Singh son of Major Singh and others still reside there. In village Hanjana famous Hindu Narmas were Moti Singh, Ram Singh, Parwat Singh and near Noshera town village of Rajal there were Fateh Singh, Ishar Singh, Sankaar Singh and is Parthi Singh (who still lives there). Also Hindu Narmas live in Kasali, District Udhampur area.

Muslim Narma Rajputs Majority of Muslim Narmas belong to Ahle Sunnat Wa'l Jama'at, Hanafi Barewli sect. Some of the Narmas are Deobandi and Ghair Muqaladeen, Ahle Hadith Wahabi Salafi.

Narma and Awaan Awaan's are Alvi, descendants of Hazrat Ali r.a. son Hazrat Hanif r.a. and they are of Arab descent, whilst Narma Rajputs are descendant from Hindu Panhwar Rajput; Maulana Abdullah Khan sahib Deobandi (late) incorrectly described Narma Rajput as descendants of Awaan.

Narma and Sohlan Rajput The only common thing between them is that they are descendants from Panhwar Rajputs. The Sohlan clan are connected with Panhwar royal family from Kashtawar; Raja Sohlan Singh is the ancestor of Sohlan Rajputs according to the history book called Tahreek e Jammu.
