This publication documents two years of activity at Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique between 2011 and 2013. It is divided into 10 chapters, reflecting our core values about design, design education and the role of design in our societies. Cette publication documente deux annes dactivits de Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique entre 2011 et 2013. Louvrage est divis en 10 chapitres, renvoyant aux valeurs fondamentales qui nous animent propos du design, de lenseignement du design et de son rle dans nos socits.

De la cration linnovation, du management stratgique un nouvel entreprenariat


Dans un contexte socio-conomique tourment, les coles de design bnficient dopportunits remarquables. Notre responsabilit a volu : il ne sagit plus seulement de former des cratifs mais des professionnels de la cration adaptables et volutifs, conscients des enjeux conomiques. Le design est devenu une discipline de management de projet au moment o linnovation est stratgique pour les entreprises et la socit. Lopportunit de travailler transversalement avec les entreprises et dautres disciplines entrane une obligation nouvelle, celle de crer et de produire de lobjectif, du ralisable et du rentable. Devant cette exigence, les coles de design doivent se transformer en centre dinnovation. Des cosystmes vertueux recherche formation entreprise structurent dj les programmes de cycle master en design qui multiplient les croisements. Les dmarches dinnovation les plus pertinentes devront tre transformes par les tudiants qui feront le grand saut de la cration dentreprise, accompagns au sein de centres dincubation. In this turbulent socio-economic context, design schools are benefitting from remarkable opportunities. Our responsibility has evolved: it is no longer just a question of training students to be creative, but rather of producing creative professionals who can adapt and respond intelligently to change, and are fully aware of economic stakes. Design has become a discipline of project management at a time when innovation is a key issue for businesses and society in general. The opportunity to work transversally with companies and other institutions results in a new obligation: that of creating and producing successfully, feasibly and profitably. Faced with this challenge, design schools must transform themselves into innovation centers. The Masters degree programs in design already incorporate virtuous networks of research, training and industry, which create strong links between these fields. The most relevant approaches to innovation will come from students who take the plunge and set up their own company, with the help and guidance of incubation centers. Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique is set to become an international reference for design, creation and innovation, thanks to the talent of our students, the merit and commitment of our staff, and all those whose hard work and support contribute to the smooth running of this institution. Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique is a state-approved private higher education institution in design funded by the Nantes Saint-Nazaire Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique est un tablissement denseignement suprieur priv ddi aux mtiers du design, soutenu par la Chambre de Commerce et dIndustrie de Nantes Saint-Nazaire et reconnu par ltat.

Our 4 Founding Principles Our activities revolve around 4 main values that lay the foundation of our vision of design: - the recognition of creative workers as true professionals; - the promotion of design as a strong economic asset; - design as an innovation-generating process; - fostering a type of design that tackles social, economic and environmental issues in a responsible way. As a result, our teaching activities are based on numerous exchanges between education, research and the business world, thanks to closely-knit ties with the industry. A Variety of Courses & Teaching Methods We specialize in teaching design via standard courses, work-study programs and continuing education: - Masters Degree in Design certified by the French Ministry of Higher Education: undergraduate courses are now divided into 4 majors based on the different design professions (Spatial Design, Graphic Design, Interaction Design and Product Design); postgraduate courses are organized around topic-oriented MDes programs focusing on contemporary social and economic issues, with possible double degrees; - Work-study learning run by the Vocational Training Center dedicated to Creation and Industrial Innovation. These courses lead to BTS (2-year vocational diplomas), work-study Bachelors degrees and Master's degree in Design; - Continuing education.

Strongs Links with the Business World Our institution also provides business services, and puts much effort into promoting design: we offer internships, workstudy learning agreements, prospective studies, collaborative projects, themed events, trend-monitoring and consultancy. Four Centers for Design & Innovation bring together experimental Design Labs, Master's programs and seeding of innovative projects. Locally Committed, Globally Connected Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique was founded in 1988, and has been located on the Atlanpole La Chantrerie technological campus in Nantes (France) since 1998. The only institution of its kind in Western France, our school has been following an international, outward-looking policy for over a decade: - internationalization of the curricula: welcoming foreign students, facilitating student exchanges to promote the international dimension of our Nantes-based site; - international development: Asia Campus in Shanghai (China) and Bangalore (India), and signing of international partnerships to spread our know-how on a worldwide scale; - gaining international fame: participating in networks and international events to give value to the projects carried out by our students and the knowledge produced within our institution. Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique is a member of a wide variety of professional organizations and academic networks. The many awards granted to our students from some of the most prestigious competitions across the globe, as well as the careers held by our alumni, stand as proof of the high quality of the courses we offer.

Quatre valeurs fondatrices Le projet de lcole est construit sur 4 valeurs qui fondent notre vision du design : - la professionnalisation des mtiers de la cration ; - la valeur conomique du design ; - laffirmation du design comme processus dinnovation ; - limportance dun design responsable face aux enjeux socio-conomiques et environnementaux. Nos activits pdagogiques sont donc structures autour dune organisation qui met en uvre un processus constant dchanges entre ducation, recherche et monde de lentreprise. Des modes denseignement diversifis Notre mtier principal est lenseignement du design par la voie acadmique, par la voie de lalternance ou dans le cadre de la formation continue : - enseignement dans le cadre du diplme de design bac + 5 vis par le ministre de lEnseignement suprieur, aujourdhui organis en cycle bachelor par grands mtiers du design (espace, graphisme, interactivit, produit) et en cycle master par programmes thmatiques dimension socio-conomique, avec des doubles diplmes possibles ; - formation en alternance dans le cadre du Centre de Formation des Apprentis (CFA) cration et innovation industrielle, dlivrant BTS, licences professionnelles et cycle master en apprentissage ; - formation continue.

Un lien fort avec le monde de lentreprise En outre, nous assurons une mission de services aux entreprises et de promotion du design : stages, contrats en alternance, tudes prospectives, projets collaboratifs, organisation dvnements thmatiques, veille et conseil. Quatre centres de design et d'innovation thmatiques regroupent aujourd'hui Design Labs exprimentaux, programmes pdagogiques et activits de soutien l'innovation. Une cole engage dans son territoire et ouverte linternational Cre en 1988, Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique est localise sur le campus technologique dAtlanpole La Chantrerie, Nantes (France) depuis 1998. Tangible Interfaces: materializing digital flow! Interfaces tangibles, matrialiser le flux numrique !
The Tangible Interfaces option of the User Experience Design program which forms part of the Design & Innovation Center Digital Culture, explores the notion of tangibility and materiality of digital flow using three different approaches: psycho-technical and ergonomic, architectural and semiological, and economic, social and political. With a strong emphasis on research, creativity and experimentation, this program is a meeting point between Product Design, Spatial Design, Interaction Design and Virtual Reality. These new sensory, cognitive and emotional experiences are the result of research on intuitive developments which are more natural for the user, a compelling target a process full of meaning. A new visual language has come about, a combination of tangible and digital! Loption Interfaces tangibles du programme User Experience Design, inscrite dans le centre de design et dinnovation Culture numrique, a pour objet de matrialiser le flux numrique par le biais de trois approches : psychotechniques et ergonomiques, architecturales et smiologiques, conomiques, sociales et politiques. Recherche, crativit et exprimentation, ce programme est au croisement du design produit, du design despace, du design dinteractivit et de la ralit virtuelle. Ces nouvelles expriences sensorielles, cognitives et motionnelles sont le fruit dune recherche de dveloppements intuitifs plus naturels pour lutilisateur, cible irrfutable pour un procd porteur de sens. Un nouveau langage plastique a ainsi vu le jour, fusion du tangible et du numrique !

Our Digital Culture Innovation and Design consists of an experimental platform, the READi Design Lab, and three related programs: Information Design and User Experience Design: Tangible Interfaces or Design & Virtual Reality.

At the heart of information technologies and the digital economy, the experimental platform READi (Applied Experimental Research and Interaction Design) reinforces the pedagogical methods and resources employed to build up subject-based expertise in line with our teaching and support for innovation. With close ties to our industrial partners, in particular the R&D departments, the READi Design Lab is constantly brainstorming to develop new tools and methods. It also creates a real dynamic for experimentation, evaluation and enhancement of applications or services implemented in our prototyping workshop. The READi Design Lab is user-driven, and involves students in innovative projects, the emergence of new uses or communication paradigms. The READi Design Lab also supports the creation of innovative businesses; it has already provided tools, advice and guidance, which have resulted in patent applications.

Au cur des technologies de linformation et de lconomie numrique, la plateforme exprimentale READi (Recherches Exprimentales Appliques en Design dinteractivit) renforce les moyens pdagogiques mis en uvre pour dvelopper une expertise thmatique, en corrlation avec lenseignement et le soutien linnovation. En lien direct avec nos partenaires industriels, notamment les services R&D, READi Design Lab ouvre sur une rflexion constante de lvolution des outils, des mthodes. Il apporte galement une vritable dynamique dexprimentation, dvaluation et damlioration dapplications ou de services mis en uvre au sein de notre atelier de prototypage. Centr sur lutilisateur, READi Design Lab implique ltudiant dans des projets innovants, mergences de nouveaux modes dusage ou paradigmes de communication. Le READi Design Lab favorise galement la cration dentreprises novatrices ; il a dj pu mettre disposition ses outils, conseiller et accompagner jusquau dpt de brevet.

READi Design Lab


Created in September 2010, the READi Design Lab was inaugurated in March 2011. It is directed by Grgoire Cliquet, who has a PhD in Engineering Sciences Innovation methods in the Web 2.0 age. Grgoire Cliquet is also course leader for the MDes program Virtual Reality & design. Our lab projects reflect the exploratory and prospective approach of READi. Cr en septembre 2010, le READi Design Lab est inaugur en mars 2011. Il est dirig par Grgoire Cliquet, Docteur en Sciences de lingnieur Mthode dinnovation lre du Web 2.0 . Grgoire Cliquet est galement responsable pdagogique du programme de cycle master Ralit virtuelle & design. Nos projets labo rpondent au positionnement exploratoire et prospectif de READi.

Tangible Interfaces is an option created by the School in 2008. This Master's in Design program has been led between 2008 and 2013 by Thierry Lehmann, who designs products, transportation, systems and onboard interfaces for the Manitou Group. Over the years, we have developed a level of expertise in terms of project positioning, originality, ethics, creativity and relevance of concepts. Interfaces tangibles est une option cre en 2008 au sein de lcole. Programme de cycle master, elle a t porte entre 2008 et 2013 par Thierry Lehmann, designer produit, transport, systmes et interfaces embarqus pour le groupe Manitou. Nous avons, au fil des ans, dvelopp une expertise en termes de positionnement de projet, de singularit, dthique, de crativit et de pertinence des concepts.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF OUR CITIES


Launched in 2012, the Sustainable Cities* Innovation and Design Center is aimed at asserting the role of the designer in the city of tomorrow. Florent Orsoni, Center Director and Course Leader for the Mutations of the Built Environment MDes program, explains the key issues.

New challenges Both in France and worldwide, urban concentration and the emergence of new types of mobility due to recent trends in city-living, involve careful consideration of the quality of life, the identity of the city, optimization of commutes or economic development in remote areas. These questions are no longer the sole preserve of architects, engineers, city planners or geographers: it is crucial that designers also take up the challenge. The topic of sustainable cities and the question of space and how it are emerging issues that were showcased at a major event organized by the Boston Society of Architects, the ABX (Architecture Boston Expo). Florent Orsoni attended the show and gave two conferences on his specialist subject. He also set up many exchanges and partnerships in the Americas on both those currently in place and those to come. The topographic and climatic characteristics of Reunion Island do not lend themselves to the implementation of accessibility for all. This observation was the starting point for a workshop that sought to overcome these constraints, and create new and appropriate services. Problmatique mondiale mergente, la thmatique de la ville durable et les questions dusage et despace furent mises lhonneur lors de lvnement majeur organis par la Boston Society of Architects, le salon ABX (Architecture Boston Expo). Florent Orsoni y a tenu deux confrences en tant quexpert et a dvelopp avec le continent amricain de nombreux changes et partenariats effectifs ou en devenir.

Les caractristiques topographiques et climatiques peu favorables la mise en uvre de laccessibilit pour tous sur lle de la Runion ont impuls un workshop afin de dpasser ces contraintes et de crer de nouveaux services appropris. lus, architectes, urbanistes, directeurs de services de collectivit ont rpondu lappel et mis en vidence la transversalit des comptences ncessaires dans de tels projets !

This approach allows partners to interact with students and to take advantage of innovative ideas resulting from an array of issues ranging from city commutes and respective transportation means, the changing face of urban furnishings, user-friendliness, etc. An acclaimed approach Thanks to this little-known discipline central to the creation of the city of tomorrow, students have tremendous resources at their disposal to share their insights in France and abroad. The first research publications combined with academic partners make it possible to convene specialists from different fields together and compare their perspectives. The aim of the Sustainable Cities Innovation and Design Center is also to provide a place for incubating student projects (methodological support and partnerships... ). The possibilities are endless bearing in mind the potential for innovation created by design.

Un centre dinnovation par le design, des tudiants au cur du dispositif

Au travers de sminaires, en collaboration avec des spcialistes des domaines concerns par la ville durable (design, mais aussi sociologie, architecture, urbanisme, transport, etc.), les tudiants des programmes de cycle master Mutations du cadre bti et Nouvelles mobilits semparent des problmatiques dusages lies laccessibilit pour tous, la multiplication des moyens de transports. Cette approche permet aux partenaires de rentrer en rsonance et de disposer dides innovantes sur des questionnements aussi divers que les modes de dplacements en centre-ville, lvolution du mobilier urbain, la convivialit... Une dmarche plbiscite Grce cette discipline encore mconnue mais pourtant centrale dans la fabrication de la ville de demain, les tudiants disposent de formidables leviers pour exposer leurs rflexions en France et linternational. De premires publications de recherches croises avec des partenaires universitaires permettent de convoquer les spcialistes des domaines et de croiser des regards. La finalit du centre de design et dinnovation Ville durable est de permettre aussi lincubation de projets dtudiants (appui mthodologique, partenariats). Les possibilits dans ce domaine sont nombreuses grce au potentiel dinnovation dont le design est porteur.

In partnership with AURAN, the Nantes-based town-planning agency, Masters students played with the codes of public space to create the right conditions for citizens to meet one another in a city with an ever-growing population. Using ecology and technology to create multi-purpose spaces revealed innovation opportunities firmly anchored in the reality of the city. Looking to the future: the ideal street! Anticipation : la rue idale !


From town squares and avenues right through to the station forecourt, The Ideal Street prospective project the role design plays in spatialand product-planning, merging accessibility, user-friendliness, new services and quality of life. 21 students and a dozen supervisors contributed to this anticipatory project. De la place lavenue, en passant par le parvis de gare, le projet prospectif La rue idale a dmontr le rle du design dans la cration despaces et de produits conjuguant accessibilit, convivialit, nouveaux services et qualit de vie. 21 tudiants et une dizaine dintervenants encadrants se sont mobiliss sur ce projet danticipation.

In order to get to grips with issues linked to accessibility for all and the multiplication of means of transport, students in both Mutations of the Built Environment and New Mobilities MDes programs attends seminars with the participation of specialists from sustainable city-relevant fields (not only design, but also sociology, architecture, urban-planning, transportation, etc.).

Interact with the business world Collaborer avec lentreprise
Our school advocates a project-grounded teaching method based on close collaborations with a number of industrial partners in a wide range of economic fields. This ever-renewed partner pool composed of SMEs and major companies is a great opportunity for designers in-the-making to play a proactive role within the business world. La philosophie de lcole repose sur une pdagogie du projet par le projet, base sur la collaboration entre lcole et lentreprise. Nous avons ainsi mis sur pied de nombreux partenariats industriels dans tous les domaines. Ce vivier de partenaires sans cesse renouvel, PME et grandes entreprises, offre aux futurs designers lopportunit de se confronter au contexte de lentreprise.

The school currently runs five innovation and design centers [including Transcultural Design Asia Campus, page 29]. We have a chat with two students in New Eating Habits and Responsible Innovation! Fire Line / Thomas Buisson

Changing consumer patterns and habits, overcoming prejudices, dealing with different professionals, working in a team, being creative For Thomas Buisson, being a designer is all about serving as many people as possible. His final degree project, Fire Line, focused not only on sustainable development and eco-design, but also his desire to play an active role in improving working conditions for firemen, thereby increasing the number of lives saved. Fire Line, which gives firemen more visibility when dealing with a fire, was a community project involving other students, the firemen of the Fire Service Department in Carquefou and the French company, Courant, which provided financial backing.

Faire changer les modes de consommation, les habitudes et dpasser les prjugs, dialoguer avec diffrents corps de mtier, travailler en quipe, tre cratif Pour Thomas Buisson, tre designer, cest surtout tre utile au plus grand nombre. Son projet de fin dtudes Fire Line a mis laccent sur le dveloppement durable, lco-conception mais galement sur sa volont de simpliquer dans lamlioration des conditions de travail des sapeurs pompiers, daugmenter leurs chances de sauver des vies. Fire Line, qui donne aux pompiers plus de visibilit lors de leurs interventions, a t un projet fdrateur impliquant dautres tudiants, les pompiers de la ville de Carquefou et l'entreprise Courant pour le soutien financier.

Virginie Delilles New Eating Habits Les Nouvelles Pratiques Alimentaires de Virginie Delille

Snack Prote'In for Charal / Snack Prote'In pour Charal / Virginie Delille

During her studies, Virginie Delille worked on projects in partnership with Fagor Brandt, and based her final degree project on transportable meat products. Her final-year internship took her to Charal (leading French meat product manufacturer), where she was able to put her skills to the test. As the only in-house designer in the Innovation Department, she worked mainly with R&D and, more specifically, Process Engineering. In this environment, she worked as an interface between external agencies, marketing and production. It was a rewarding experience that allowed her to put her know-how in Graphic Design and volumes to good use developing existing products in a coherent way.

Pendant son cursus, Virginie Delille a travaill sur des projets en partenariat avec Fagor Brandt et a dvelopp son projet de fin dtudes sur les produits nomades base de viande. Son dernier stage la emmene chez Charal, entreprise qui lui a permis de tester ses comptences. Unique designer intgre au sein du service Innovation, elle travailla principalement avec la R&D et, plus particulirement, lingnierie process. Dans ce cadre, elle a su dvelopper une position dinterface entre les agences externes, le marketing et la production. Une exprience enrichissante o son approche graphique et de conception des volumes a t mise profit dans un contexte dvolution cohrente de produits existants.

Haier, the third leading white goods manufacturer in the world, did us the honor of partnering one of our workshops. Over a five-day period, a design manager from the company, three faculty members from guest Chinese universities (Tsinghua/Beijing, Tongji/ Shanghai and Shandong University of Art and Design/Jinan), and Frdric Bonin (former Course Leader for the Masters program in China until 2011) mobilized 34 students (half French, half Chinese). Participants came up with global solutions to create kitchens for Generation Y (post-80s) users, in which user experience serves as a vehicle for innovation. At the end of the workshop, designers and managers from Haier rewarded the teams and their product concepts for their creativity, cross-cultural management or economic potential. Durant cinq jours, un design manager de la firme, trois professeurs provenant des universits chinoises invites (Tsinghua/Beijing, Tongji/Shanghai et Shandong University of Art and Design/Jinan), et Frdric Bonin (responsable du programme en Chine jusqu'en 2011), ont mobilis 34 tudiants (pour moiti franais, pour lautre chinois). Fabien Grgoire, who graduated from the school in 2001, has worked in Japan for nearly ten years. Today, as the Director of the Kenwood Design Corporation, he works closely with Transcultural Design Asia Campus Innovation and Design Center. Of the two joint projects that Kenwood carried out in 2011 and 2012, the majority were successful. We were pleasantly surprised by the students insight, their capacity to define their design question, and to raise certain issues that we had overlooked or simply ignored in our previous research. The idea of getting French students to work on the future of onboard navigation systems in India or future means of communication in China stemmed from a genuine interest from JVC Kenwood. Its research enabled us to find similarities, and confirm certain concepts that we were in the process of developing. Can you tell us about the role of the designer in Asian society?

Vous travaillez avec nos tudiants de Chine et dInde. Quelle conclusion tirez-vous de cette exprience ? Des deux collaborations que Kenwood a menes en 2011 et 2012, la majorit des projets furent positifs. Nous avons t agrablement surpris par la perspicacit des tudiants, leur capacit dfinir leur problmatique et soulever certains problmes que nous avions survols ou simplement ignors lors de nos prcdentes recherches. Faire travailler des tudiants franais sur le futur de la navigation embarque en Inde ou les futures modes de communication en Chine partait dun rel intrt de la part du groupe JVC Kenwood. Many European companies are now locating their departments directly in Asia, seeing as theyre already designing and producing out there, and taking on more and more designers and researchers. Due to its role in the company, design is the ideal interface for understanding market trends, users, strategy and production. Given the interest in design expressed by the younger generations in Asia, I am thrilled about the changes to come and the recognition that corporate design is finally getting.

This was the theme of the joint project between Johnson Controls Inc., one of Chinas leading car seat manufacturers, and our China Studio (previously China Campus, editors note). This partnership gave students the opportunity to analyze emerging uses in order to create, develop and market new car interior concepts for families of the future!

Today, businesses have finally understood the added value inherent in design: facilitating use and strengthening brand image. In 2010, Ashtech, a company which develops geo-positioning devices, took full advantage of our students work. They developed a new interface making it easier for the user to appropriate its services, and launched it on the market that same year. Performance is no longer only driven by R&D departments: interaction designers also have their say, particularly in the case of Capgemini, which teamed up with some of our students to take part in the SNCF MultiTouch Competition. The collaboration was a resounding success, with a 1st and a 3rd place! From one successful collaboration to another, our students worked on projects on the connected home, a creative challenge set by Orange. Five student projects were on display at the exhibition Orange hands you the keys, at the Lieu du Design (Paris, autumn 2012). Les entreprises ont, aujourdhui, ralis la valeur ajoute du design : facilit dusage et renforcement de limage de marque. La socit Ashtech, qui dveloppe des produits de golocalisation, a bnfici du travail de nos tudiants et mis sur le march, en 2010, une nouvelle interface facilitant lappropriation de ses services par lutilisateur. La performance nest plus seulement du ressort de la R&D, elle passe aussi par le design dinteraction, notamment pour Capgemini qui a associ nos tudiants leur rponse au concours SNCF MultiTouch Competition. Innovation in video games is no longer the sole preserve of IT geeks. After completing his undergraduate program in Interaction Design, David Arenou enrolled in the Tangible Interfaces program in 2007, and it was here that he developed his final degree project, Immersive Rail Shooter, a virtual shooting game. Before his oral degree defense, he took part in several competitions, and managed to make a name for himself at Laval Virtual 2010. Indeed, his innovation was so widely acclaimed that it won him three awards at this event: 1st prize in the Demo category and the prize for best technical development in the Virtual Fantasy student competition the prize for Best Technical Development in the Virtual Fantasy Contest (student competition), and the IVRC (International Collegiate Virtual Reality Contest) prize. This prestigious award enabled David Arenou to take part in the Digital Content Expo in Tokyo and the Japanese IVRC competition. The competition proved to be a real success with David winning the Special Jury Prize awarded by Akihiko Shirai, Head of the Kanagawa Institute of Technology. The trip to Japan was full of interesting encounters and discoveries, and it proved, once again, the effectiveness of new modalities equipped with simple, intuitive interactive systems and the Japanese interest in design know-how la franaise.

While David Arenou was busy winning 1st prize in the Demo category and that for Best Technical Development at Virtual Fantasy in 2010, other students also distinguished themselves at recent editions of Laval Virtual. In 2011, Franois Ballon presented Know-how Augmented, a tool that allows companies to preserve and pass on their traditional and technical know-how. A combination of paper and digital manual, KHA uses mixed reality to maximize the means of skills transfer. The outcome was 1st prize for creativity! In 2012, it was the turn of Team Lavalanche (Benjamin Berger, Terence Desclain, Quentin Le Roux and Felix Raymond 3rd-year Interaction Design students) to take 1st place in the "Limited Time" category. The aim: to develop an original Virtual Reality application by integrating a mystery object Our competitors were given three foam balls.

Avant sa soutenance, il participe plusieurs concours et se fait particulirement remarquer lors de Laval Virtual 2010. En effet, trois distinctions lui ont t ici dcernes : le 1er prix catgorie dmos et le prix du meilleur dveloppement technique du concours Virtual Fantasy (comptition tudiante) et le prix IVRC (International Collegiate Virtual Reality Contest). David Arenous final degree project, Immersive Rail Shooter, is an innovative device that enables players to physically immerse themselves into virtual shooting games. The player has to use his body to control the avatars movements on the screen: hiding behind furniture, moving from one hiding place to the next in order to get to the following sequence, reaching bonus markers to recover energy or time, etc. Le projet de fin dtudes de David Arenou, Immersive Rail Shooter, est un dispositif innovant dimmersion physique dans un jeu de tir virtuel. Le joueur est ainsi invit adopter une gestuelle propre au jeu : se cacher derrire des lments physiques, se dplacer de cachette en cachette afin de poursuivre le scnario, se rendre aux marqueurs de bonus pour rcuprer de la sant ou du temps

In October 2011, the Loire-Atlantique County Council voted to make its databases open to the public, and signed a partnership agreement with Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique to help it find forms of representation, uses and new services that could be developed using the departmental data. French and foreign students from the new International Connected Environments Class program set about tackling this challenge for one semester. Under the supervision of Grgoire Cliquet director of the READi Design Lab, and Emmanuel Raillard Engineer, Consultant and Trainer in creative methods of innovation, students were able to contemplate the different domains chosen by the dpartement for this experiment: environment, territory, transportation, social initiatives and finance. Three proposals for scenarios were selected, restructured and completed for a public exhibit; an interactive mapping application on a touch table was also developed by Bakasable for the READi Design Lab. It served to illustrate the possibilities of exploiting local data on this type of device. Octobre 2011, le Conseil gnral de Loire-Atlantique a vot louverture de ses donnes collectes et a sign une convention de partenariat avec Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique afin dimaginer les modes de reprsentation, les usages et les nouveaux services dvelopps partir des donnes dpartementales. Les tudiants franais et trangers du nouveau programme de Classe internationale Connected Environments se sont attels cette tche durant un semestre. Encadrs par Grgoire Cliquet directeur du laboratoire READi Design Lab, et Emmanuel Raillard ingnieur, consultant et formateur en mthodes cratives dinnovation, les tudiants ont pu aborder les diffrents domaines de comptences slectionns par le dpartement pour cette exprimentation : environnement, territoire, transport, action sociale et finances. Trois propositions de scnarios ont finalement t slectionnes, remises en forme et compltes pour une exposition publique ; une application de cartographie interactive sur table tactile a galement t dveloppe par Bakasable pour le READi Design Lab. In September 2012, we signed a collaboration agreement with lcole des Mines in Nantes to enable our students and recent graduates to develop their innovative projects at the Center for Innovation and Technology Transfers (CITT). The CITT is a technological incubator designed as a forum in which entrepreneurs, students, researchers and businesses may exchange ideas. It also provides personalized support for those wishing to set up a business, and each year two students with promising projects from Lcole de design de Nantes Atlantique can take advantage of this service. Depuis septembre 2012, un accord de collaboration a t sign avec lcole des Mines de Nantes afin de permettre laccompagnement de projets innovants ports par nos tudiants et jeunes diplms au sein de leur Centre dInnovations et Transferts Technologique (CITT). Vritable incubateur technologique, le CITT de lcole des Mines de Nantes a t conu pour tre un lieu dchanges entre entrepreneurs, lves, chercheurs et entreprises. Il inclut un dispositif daccompagnement personnalis la cration dentreprise dont bnficient, chaque anne, deux porteurs de projets de Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique.

Paul Vickers, Consultant, Creative Director and internationally-acclaimed Designer Paul Vickers gave two Packaging seminars at Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique in 2010 and 2011.
Assisted by Nathalie Templier, course leader in the graphic design undergraduate program, and Patrick Chesneau, course leader in vocational training in Communication, space & volume design [deceased in 2012], Paul Vickers sharpened students design perception in the first packaging seminar H20: the new luxury. For five days, they tackled the question: Can ecology add value to the luxury sector? Ten projects exploring how water is packaged revisited the identity and use of the plastic water bottle. In groups of three, each team had to present its concept following a specific modus operandi: exploring possible shapes with drawings, creating a logo, user scenarios and 3D modeling of the packaging it had designed. Following this workshop, some of the projects were exhibited at the Luxepack show in October 2011 in Monaco, where the school was given no less than 70 sq. m of stand space. The following year, Paul Vickers and Nathalie Templier renewed their collaboration at another packaging seminar entitled Organic Cosmetics, which was also devoted to the luxury market. Third-year students in Graphic Design had to create their ideal packaging for different products whilst respecting the organic charter (no hot stamping, use of recycled materials, etc.). Ultimately, organic luxury seems less to challenge the organic philosophy than to redefine luxury as more ethical, more sustainable and less ostentatious.

ELC: It helps to get a better idea of ergonomics, and validate the connections between parts. The students learn about machining techniques, and have an understanding of what is feasible or not at an industrial level. The workshop was heavily involved in the production of pieces for the Casual Fitness exhibition. Which project(s) represented the biggest challenge? ELC: The biggest challenge, no doubt, for us was to design and create 11 fairly impressive projects simultaneously in the workshop, and carry them all out to completion. H.B. : Raliser des maquettes permet dexercer sa perception dun volume dans lespace et dutiliser une multitude de matriaux. Cest aussi la possibilit de dcouvrir des pistes nouvelles. E.L.C. : Elle permet de se rendre compte de lergonomie, de valider les liaisons entre les pices. Les tudiants apprennent ainsi les techniques dusinages et se rendent compte de ce qui peut tre ralisable ou non un niveau industriel. Accompagn de Nathalie Templier, responsable du 1er cycle en design graphique, et de Patrick Chesneau, responsable du BTS Design de communication, espace et volume [dcd en 2012], Paul Vickers a aiguis le regard des tudiants lors du premier sminaire packaging H20 : le nouveau luxe . Durant 5 jours, ceux-ci ont tudi la question: Lcologie peut-elle devenir une des valeurs porteuses dans le domaine du luxe ?. Dix projets de conditionnement de leau ont revisit lidentit et lusage de cette bouteille. Diviss par trinmes, chaque groupe tait tenu de prsenter son concept selon un modus operandi bien prcis : recherche de forme par le dessin, cration dun logotype, scnarios dutilisation et modlisation 3D du packaging imagin. la suite de ce workshop, une slection de projets a t expose au salon Luxepack, en octobre 2011 Monaco, o lcole disposait de 70 m2 despace dexposition. Lanne suivante, Paul Vickers et Nathalie Templier ont ritr leur collaboration lors dun sminaire packaging intitul Organic Cosmetics et ddi lunivers du luxe. Les tudiants de 3e anne en design graphique ont d crer des enveloppes de rve pour diffrents produits tout en respectant les contraintes de la charte bio impose (pas de marquage chaud, matriaux recycls). Au final, le luxe bio apparat moins comme une remise en cause du bio que comme une redfinition du luxe, plus thique, plus durable et moins ostentatoire.

Third-year Spatial Design students were faced with a real challenge: making a cantilevered belvedere that would provide maximum range using cardboard Tangram pieces. After lengthy analysis of the topic, designing the required model, experimentation and a pre-modeling session, they produced an eclectic series of landscapes that mirror their sensitivity. HB: The school possesses 6 workshops of varying sizes and functions. In the machine, resin and painting workshops, it is possible to carry out several projects using different materials: in wood, cardboard, plastic, resin, metal, etc. In this workshop you can cut, bend, machine, thermoform, glue, sand down and paint so that the finished product is as close as possible to an industrially-produced object. In your opinion, what is the models role in design practice and teaching?

HB: Creating models helps fine-tune volume perception and use of a wide range of materials. It can also provide opportunities for finding new ideas and approaches.

In the second year of Interaction Design, one of the course objectives is to broaden the students notion of what is possible by letting them come to grips with Stop motion before specializing in the design of 3D digital worlds.
En 2 anne de Design dinteractivit, lun des enjeux de la formation est dapporter aux tudiants un large ventail du champ des possibles, leur permettant ainsi de se familiariser avec le Stop motion, avant de se spcialiser dans la conception dunivers 3D numriques.

The last two editions of the Stop motion seminar were run by Briac Leprtre (artist and designer) and Andr Audoux (designer). Their aim was to initiate Interaction Design students to traditional modeling and animation techniques. In order to create a short film frame by frame, the students had to work on creating volume (for the sets and characters, among others), as well as lighting, composition and cinematic storytelling. In groups of four, the students thought up short sketches a few minutes in length combining technique and humor, and including a set and a character made from materials such as Styrodur, plasticine and aluminum wire. The short films resulting from these seminars, as entertaining as they were varied, illustrated the creativity and capacity to acquire new skills of undergraduate students in the Interaction Design program run by Florent Michel, 2nd- and 3rd-year Course Leader.

Les deux dernires ditions du sminaire Stop motion ont t encadres par Briac Leprtre (artiste et designer) et Andr Audoux (designer). Ils ont eu pour objectif de confronter les tudiants aux techniques traditionnelles de modlisation et danimation. La ralisation de films image par image a demand aux tudiants de se mesurer la gnration de volume (dcors, personnages, etc.), lclairage, au cadrage et la narration cinmatographique. Rpartis en groupe de 4, les tudiants ont ralis des sayntes de quelques minutes alliant technique, humour et comprenant un dcor et un personnage obligatoires raliss avec des matriaux tels que le Styrodur, la pte Fimo, le fil daluminium, etc. Les rsultats de ces sminaires, aussi varis que divertissants, ont attest de la crativit et de la capacit dappropriation des tudiants de 1er cycle design dinteractivit emmens par Florent Michel, responsable pdagogique en 2e et 3e annes.

The notion of wandering invites a multifaceted interpretation: for some, it conjures up a leisurely stroll; for others, instability. Each of the films in this program takes an individual approach to the idea of permanent movement, yet the films have much in common. Wandering through wide open spaces, because they can only be fully understood when travelled through. As such, the United States was the obvious choice with the crossing of vast deserts and the Indian figure in The Searchers, the Great Depression of the 1930s with a distinctly burlesque feel in Obrother, the yearning for freedom and the roadmovie in Wild at Heart, and the mix of urban cultures in Ghost dog. Moving on to Japan, Hana-bi looks at the link between wandering and the very idea of Evil, or the survival of two street children in Tekkonkinkreet. On a lighter note, we take a look at 1950s Paris and a young criminal on the run in Breathless. More than just the idea of geographical displacement, the individual or collective journeys of the characters give rise to a series of questions around identity. All have to face up to the fact that their world is crumbling, their landmarks disintegrating. So the notion of wandering is also about constantly changing norms and values.This program was put together with a view to presenting a variety of cinematographic styles in order to provide an extensive overview of film. It is based not only on films from different countries and historical periods, but also on unique forms of visual expression.

The films are presented following a rhythmic progression as opposed to chronological or geographic, and must be viewed as a set of possible interpretations of the general theme. There is also diversity in terms of status as, regardless of the context in which they were created, they represent vastly varying resources (human, economic and technical). The production of a film is never a criterion for quality, and cinema, as an art but also an industry, creates entertaining films, which are always suitable for analysis, be it aesthetic, historical or sociological. In order to establish how each film uses a narrative system reflecting the notion of wandering, we collected analytical feedback on the film straight after the screening. The preferred method was using a series of photograms (stills taken from the film). The many similarities allowed us to examine the overlaps of themes or aesthetics designed to reveal the main lines of the direction. On a broader level, the direction often denotes the means with which a filmmaker puts his stamp on the films that he makes and shows a distinctive personality. Excerpts from other films by the same filmmaker may also be viewed, in order to gain a better understanding of the key themes.

La notion derrance engage une lecture polysmique, puisquelle renvoie autant la flnerie qu linstabilit. Chacun des films de cette programmation convoque une entre particulire dans ce rapport au mouvement permanent, nanmoins les liens entre les films abondent. Aux espaces, puisquil nest peut-tre question que de les parcourir pour mieux leur redonner du sens. ce titre, les tats-Unis furent envisags par la traverse dtendues dsertiques et la figure indienne dans La prisonnire du dsert, la Grande Dpression des annes 1930 sur un mode burlesque dans Obrother, laspiration la libert et le road-movie dans Sailor et Lula, le mtissage des cultures urbaines dans Ghost dog. Au Japon, lerrance questionne la rencontre avec lide mme du Mal dans Hana-bi, ou la survie de deux enfants des rues dans Amer bton. Plus lger, le Paris des annes 1950 et un jeune dlinquant en fuite dans bout de souffle. Au-del de lide du dplacement gographique, les trajectoires individuelles ou collectives des personnages induisent une srie de questionnements identitaires. Tous doivent admettre lide que les constituants de leur monde seffritent, que leurs repres se dissolvent. Lerrance est donc aussi le flottement des normes et des valeurs.

Cette programmation a t tablie dans un souci de prsenter des types dcriture cinmatographiques varis, afin de disposer dun panorama filmique tendu. Elle sappuie sur des films provenant de pays et dpoques diverses, mais aussi sur des formes dexpressions visuelles singulires. Ils sont proposs selon une progression rythmique plutt que chronologique ou gographique, et doivent tre entrevus comme un ensemble de dclinaisons possibles du thme gnral. Leur diversit est aussi statutaire, puisquindpendamment de leur contexte de cration, ils sous-tendent des moyens (humains, conomiques, techniques) trs diffrents. La production dun film nest jamais un critre de sa qualit, et le cinma, en tant quart mais aussi industrie, gnre des uvres divertissantes qui, toujours, se prtent lanalyse (esthtique, mais aussi historique ou sociologique). Afin de spcifier de quelle manire chaque film procde dun systme narratif faisant cho lerrance, il sagissait de faire un retour analytique sur le film immdiatement aprs sa dcouverte en salle. Loutil privilgi fut la srie de photogrammes (image fixes, extraites du film) dont les nombreuses mises en correspondance permettaient doprer des recoupements (thmatiques, esthtiques) destins rvler les principales lignes de la

mise en scne. un niveau plus large, la mise en scne peut dsigner les moyens par lesquels un cinaste imprime sa marque aux films quil tourne, affirme une particularit, et implique de recourir des extraits dautres films de son uvre, afin den cerner les principaux contours.

At the end of its first year in Shanghai, Lcole de design, which has had a subsidiary in China since 2008, inaugurated the China Campus exhibition #1 in September 2011. Based on a vision of education and design, it highlighted the notion of sharing as a means of facilitating academic exchanges between Europe and China. Projects carried out in partnership with international and Chinese businesses and agencies, such as GE Healthcare, Johnson Controls or XL+ Design, as well as a project on metro stations developed for Shanghai in partnership with the Shanghai University and Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, were presented at this first edition. When its doors opened to the public, the exhibition was a resounding success, which just goes to show the great interest the people of Shanghai take in French design. Au terme de sa premire anne Shanghai, Lcole de design, implante en Chine depuis 2008, a inaugur lexposition China Campus #1 en septembre 2011. Vision de lenseignement et du design, elle revendiquait la notion de partage pour faciliter les changes acadmiques entre lEurope et la Chine. Des projets mens en partenariat avec des entreprises et agences internationales et chinoises telles que GE Healthcare, Johnson Controls ou encore XL+ Design, ainsi quun projet de station de mtro labor pour Shanghai en partenariat avec luniversit de Shanghai et Shanghai Shentong Metro Group furent galement prsents lors de cette premire dition. Ouverte au public, elle a rencontr un vritable succs qui met bien en relief lintrt des shanghaens pour le design franais.

In 2012, the Shanghai team was busy organizing a comprehensive exhibition held in this former industrial building converted into an art gallery. Joint projects, such as the futuristic hotel room designed alongside Nao or the development of driver assistance systems with Continental VDO, students final degree or personal projects, like Arthur Kenzo Debaigues Swashies!!!, illustrated a wealth of design solutions that were relevant in different cultural, economic and social contexts. It was also the opportunity to discover the work produced during in the Sino-French workshop organized in Nantes in June 2012, bringing together 40 students and teachers from Shanghai University. This was a joint initiative organized with the team of Nantes Just Imagine, international promotion agency for Nantes and Saint-Nazaire, to demonstrate the vitality and dynamism of the Nantes area and the importance it attaches to creation!

En 2012, lquipe de Shanghai se mobilise pour une exposition exhaustive hberge dans cet ancien local industriel converti en galerie dart. Projets en partenariat, comme cette chambre dhtel du futur avec lagence Nao ou lvolution des systmes daide la conduite avec Continental VDO, projets de fin dtudes ou travaux personnels dtudiants, comme Swashies!!! de Arthur Kenzo Debaigue, dmontraient autant de rponses de designer pertinentes dans un contexte culturel, conomique et social diffrent. They are responsible for the development of China Studio with a pedagogical approach based on close relationships with companies. Implant en Chine en 2008, Qingdao, le China Campus rcemment renomm China Studio sest tabli en 2010 Shanghai, ville cosmopolite, stratgique et stimulante. Partenaire de luniversit de Shanghai, le China Studio est install dans la facult des Beaux-Arts o il a investi son studio (un espace de plus de 200 m2) et dispose dun accs aux diffrents ateliers et espaces dexposition. Cette nouvelle installation a sign galement laboutissement dun cycle pour la 1re promotion Design et interculturalit ayant pass deux annes en Chine. Ils y ont pass leur soutenance en pionnier ! Lquipe pdagogique a galement t renouvele. Le directeur pdagogique, Frdric Bonin, a cd sa place Chris Ebbert designer industriel issu dOtago Polytechnic en NouvelleZlande et de nationalit allemande, et Marc Rambaud diplm de Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique en 2007 et designer produit chez Gwen Design (Shanghai). Ils y ont la responsabilit du dveloppement de China Studio avec un modle pdagogique bas sur la proximit avec les entreprises.

China Studio
Established in Qingdao, China, in 2008, the China Campus was recently renamed China Studio, and transferred in 2010 to Shanghai, a cosmopolitan, strategic and dynamic city. A partner of Shanghai University, the new China Studio is now integrated within the Fine Arts Building (with over 200 sq. m) where it has access to the different workshops and exhibition spaces. This new facility also marks the end of a cycle for the first graduating class in Transcultural Design after a two-year stint in China. They were the first ones to defend their thesis there! The teaching staff also changed. Course Director Frdric Bonin has been replaced by German Industrial Designer Chris Ebbert, who graduated from Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand, and Marc Rambaud, 2007 graduate from L'cole de design Nantes Atlantique and Product Designer at Gwen Design (Shanghai).

I decided to devote my final degree project to the idea of copies. I chose the word copy since its omnipresent nature contradicts the values of innovation that characterize design. It is, therefore, an interesting starting point for reflection. After an exploratory phase looking at the relationship between "copy" and design, I developed a project firmly rooted in reality. I wanted to capitalize on the immense local production in order to make use of industrial strategies and already-existing products resulting from global industrial production. I was thus able to come up with an innovative and comprehensive system for integrating TV&Hi-Fi (unique design, fully built-in, hidden cables, etc.), which I based on an existing process used in kitchen design. When you carried out this project, who were your key contacts?

I did my internship at the French-Finnish design agency, Atelier Forever, in Shanghai. For six months, I took part in various spatial, product and packaging projects. I had the chance to work directly with customers at every stage of the project, from briefing to productionmonitoring. This experience proved to be extremely rewarding as I was entrusted with a great deal of responsibility in terms of project management. In order to understand the specific context, I got in touch with professionals in industrial production and designers to learn more about the Chinese creative model. I also got involved in the setting-up of a workshop with a group of Chinese design students, as well as meeting and talking with local residents to identify user needs, to get a better grasp on the Chinese creative process.

Jai dcid de consacrer mon projet de fin dtudes la copie . Jai choisi ce mot, copie , car cest un thme omniprsent en Chine qui se trouve en contradiction avec les valeurs dinnovation que vhicule le design. Cest donc une intressante source de rflexions. 2012 : Casual Fitness pour tous

For the 2012 edition of Salone, the theme established by Nicolas Prioux, Course Leader for the option, was Casual Fitness. In total, 11 furniture projects integrating sport and physical exercise came to life in our workshops. Organized in groups of 3 to 4 students, each team was able to develop a unique creative concept, in which the ability to produce a full-scale model was essential. One of the proposals, Toutem, a totem-style shelf, cleverly combines several fitness accessories. Jean Luc Lallemand, Head of Marketing Projects and Product Development for French company Gautier, was particularly impressed by this project, and keen to back the idea of Quentin Manach, Suzanne Bertrand-Sulem and Fabien Proust by producing Toutem at the companys expense. Produced in duplicate (one for the Milan exhibition and the other for the companys showroom), Toutem required the involvement of Gautiers product manager, design office and Purchasing Department. Pour ldition 2012 du Salone, la thmatique retenue par Nicolas Prioux, responsable pdagogique de loption, tait Casual Fitness. En tout, 11 projets de mobilier incluant le sport et lexercice physique ont t concrtiss dans nos ateliers. Organise par groupe de 3 4 tudiants, chaque quipe a pu dvelopper un concept cratif particulier et produire un prototype chelle relle, dimension incontournable du projet. Parmi les propositions, Toutem, une tagre de style totem intgre plusieurs lments de fitness. Re-elected President of Cumulus in 2010, Christian Guellerin, Executive Director of Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique, was able to assert his strong stance between 2007 and 2013 in various international circles. For example, in 2011, members of Cumulus, the leading international network of Art and Design schools, met for the Annual General Meeting in Svres near Paris. The theme of this conference, organized by Strate Collge, was Crossing Talents, transversality in design. C. Guellerin chose to reflect on the opportunities that a green economy offers designers. The Design Research Society (DRS) organized another event in Paris in May: a day-long symposium on the theme of Design & pedagogy; C. Guellerin argued the importance of clearly-defined research for responsible and innovative design. There was the second Finnish-Russian Forum on Innovation (FRIU) and the Cities for All conference organized by EIDD Design for All. These are just a few of the events where C.Guellerin was able to defend the designers' strategic position for the future of our societies, as well as the sense of responsibility their work must reflect.

English is already actively used in the school in France, India and China, and now the opening of an International Class on the Nantes campus has allowed a number of foreign students to join the school. Students can choose from three, year-long themes or as part of an ERASMUS program: Brand Design (for Product or Graphic Design students), Product Design (for Product Design students only) and Connected Environment (for Spatial and Interaction Design students). Plus, everything is taught in English!

DOUBLE DEGREES anticipating the future!

Helping students to gain skills in management, and business and financial strategy, as well as project management and design This is the purpose of the Entrepreneuriales Challenge in which 325 students from the west of France took part in 2010; among them was Julien Bergignat, a 5th-year Master's student in the Responsible Innovation program at Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique. Together, Julien, two Master's students from the Business Administration Institute of the University of Nantes (IAE) and two from the Icam School of Engineering, based their project, Hempy, on an environmentally-friendly sleeve for laptops. The designers had to decide how best to integrate ecological values into the product, while respecting certain traditional features of the product with added appeal. They decided to surf the retro-marketing wave by creating a case from a single piece of hemp, the four sides of which fold into the center. This experience gave Julien Bergignat the chance to establish dialogue, and understand the foreign languages spoken by marketing people and engineers, which was a real asset in his first job! Le parti-pris fut de surfer sur la vague du rtro-marketing en ralisant un tui dune seule pice de chanvre et dont les quatre cts se rabattent en son centre. Cette exprience a permis Julien Bergignat de crer le dialogue et comprendre les langues trangres de marqueteurs et dingnieurs, ce qui a t un atout pour son entre dans la vie active !

Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique and ESSCA Business School have, therefore, teamed up to create BADGE Design Manager, a continuing education course that lets designers combine managerial skills with strategic design. It is aimed at designers with at least five years' professional experience or Design Managers looking to further their skills.

Can you tell us about your professional experience? MM: I graduated in 1994, and got my first job in October of that year Ive been Design manager at Cuisines Design Industries since March 2007. ND: Ive been a designer for 17 years, 12 of which have been at Delta Dore, manufacturer in energy management and comfort in homes and buildings. Why did you choose to enroll in the BADGE Design Manager course? ND: Several things about this course appealed to me, especially the detailed analysis of the changes taking place in our profession, particularly in user-centered design and design thinking. MM: Ive progressed from a purely operational role to one requiring basic management skills. Today, I have to manage the design process, and work with a budget, resources, partners, etc.

ND: It makes me feel more

confident in my job, and gives me an advantage over other designers. Ive also acquired new methods in terms of management and a better understanding of a company's operations.

Does the organization of the course fit in with your activity? MM: Personal investment and determination are both key factors to success. ND: The workload is heavy and requires a considerable investment on my part, particularly when it comes to researching and writing the thesis. How do you see your role of Design Manager today? MM: I took this course to become even better equipped to lead our company forward and grow our creative potential. ND: From now on its all about having a more global vision and offering different working methods capable of integrating the complexity and diversity of the world around us.

XAVIER FERR: HONG KONG THE FUTURE OF ELECTRONICS! Xavier ferr : Hong Kong oU la voie de llectronique !
Xavier Ferr began his career in childrens design which took him to Asia, but he soon left this sector to pursue his real passion: electronics! He joined Hong Kong-based company PSL, which, at the time, had no design input, and collaborated on the creation of SpareOne, a mobile phone that won the Editors Choice Award from the Popular Mechanics magazine at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show. Its unique appeal? It is the only telephone in the world to run on a single AA battery and, fully-charged, has a battery life of up to 15 years when not in use. It's an easy-to-use emergency phone; there is no screen, its basic ergonomic design is a throwback to earlier models, which represents a challenge for the designer as consumers are used to telephones that explain everything, says Xavier Ferr, who created its user language, as well as the role and function of the keys. As sole designer of this micro company, he also devised the instructions and packaging in other words, he can take full credit for the kit's presentation. After graduating from Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique in 2007, Mathilde Fourreau, Design Manager at Nao Architecture, was involved in developing the concept of the Monaco Pavilion for the Shanghai World Fair, Better City, Better Life. In order to meet the expectations of the Principality whilst respecting the theme of the exhibition, Mathilde Fourreau decided to represent the city-state by highlighting its natural elements. The facade of the Monaco Pavilion symbolizes an eco-aware city surrounded by both the sun and sea. The sun rays spread across the running water in the rings wrapped around the pavilion. The number of clouds and the force of the wind engender visual variation, and breathe life into the edifice. The teams goal was to underline the importance of climatic changes and their consequences. The glass and water used are recycled, and the facade keeps the pavilion cool inside.

Pour rpondre aux attentes de la Principaut tout en restant en accord avec le thme de lexposition, Mathilde Fourreau a choisi de reprsenter la ville-tat en mettant en exergue ses lments naturels. La faade du Pavillon de Monaco symbolise une ville entoure par le soleil et la mer, respectueuse de lenvironnement. Les rayons de soleil traversent leau qui coule dans les anneaux entourant le pavillon. La quantit de nuages et la force du vent entranent des variations visuelles et donnent vie ldifice. Lquipe a voulu souligner limportance des changements climatiques et leurs consquences. Le verre et leau utiliss sont recycls et la faade permet au pavillon de rester frais.

Andrews-Junior currently works for Google in Mountain View, California. He is an Interaction Designer in a team specializing in interfaces for cell phones and touchscreen tablets. After a first experience at Mdialab, a Sciences Po research unit in Paris, he jumped at the opportunity to join the Design & User Experience team at Canonical, the Londonbased editor of Ubuntu. For Andrews-Junior, having this double degree made all the difference when it came to getting my first job, its a real bonus on a recent grad's resum. Frantz Lasorne
Co-founder of Visionaries 777, an Interaction Design agency based in Hong Kong created in 2010, Frantz is today an Interaction Design Consultant. After working in the R&D Department of GEEA (Gameplay Engineering Entertainment Analysis) at Ubisoft in Paris, he pursued his career at the LEGOConcept Lab in Billund, Denmark, before devoting time and energy to setting up his agency with his business partner, Nicolas Guyon. The Virtual Reality double degree program opened my eyes to the fields of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality combined with Interaction Design. Without the resources and basic knowledge I acquired par throughout the course of this program, I might never have discovered such fields in my career as an Interaction Designer. Des Horts graduated from Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique in 2005, and has a rich and varied career path; from Alstom to Landor in London, he then went on to work for the Electrolux group in Italy. From 2008 to 2011, he designed household appliances for the groups three main brands: Electrolux, AEG and Zanussi. Today, he is Senior Product Designer for Grohe, a leading manufacturer of bathroom fittings based in Dsseldorf, Germany. A. Matthieu Thaudin, a Spatial Designer at Phytolab, a landscaping and environmental agency, was apprenticeship manager to several students doing the 2-year vocational diploma in Spatial Design, because apprentices provide operational assistance, but also a wealth of resources for the agency. Curiosity, a broad knowledge base, sensitivity and interest in design are the fundamentals needed to work at the agency, whose aim is to help work-study candidates get up and running! For the agency, their presence provides us with a more critical and broader approach to our work. Our regular discussions are extremely informative. As an apprenticeship manager, the role of supervising the apprentice throughout their training also gives us a more direct and dynamic contact with the local design network. Anthony Durand, a Product Designer at Belm, an industrial manufacturer specialized in entrance doors and a leader in the French market, takes on an apprentice from the Vocational Training Center for Creation and Innovation (CFA). Convinced of the benefits of this type of training, A. Durand enjoys having a peer, and considers that two levels of experience can result in some interesting exchanges. He stresses the importance of the apprentices personality: I need to feel a strong creative streak combined with a lot of motivation. Since 2011, the CFA (Vocational Training Center for Creation and Industrial Innovation) has been offering an apprenticeship Masters program; with its combination courses at Lcole de design and project-based work in a host company, this Masters-level training course in Design and Innovation Management gives apprentices sound expertise in line with

societal changes. The studentapprentices, bound by contract with large, often international companies, follow a 15-week course at Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique. The project-based work takes place primarily in companies, with an experienced designer to supervise and in close cooperation with the schools teaching staff.

Depuis 2011, le CFA cration et innovation industrielle offre un programme de cycle master en alternance ; entre enseignements dispenss Lcole de design et pratique du projet en entreprise daccueil, cette formation bac + 5 en Management du design et de linnovation apporte aux apprentis une solide expertise en adquation avec les volutions socitales.

Ceux-ci, tous en contrat dans une entreprise souvent denvergure internationale, suivent Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique des cours durant 15 semaines. The Worldskills Competition is a biennial event which has been working to promote trade and craft skills for over forty years. A number of students or apprentices from Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique HAVE progressed through the various stages to represent France in this international competition. Les Olympiades des Mtiers sont, depuis plus de quarante ans, lvnement biennal qui uvre pour la promotion des mtiers artisanaux et techniques. Certains tudiants ou apprentis de Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique ont su franchir les diffrentes tapes pour reprsenter la France dans cette comptition internationale.

Entered in the Webdesign category at the 2012 National WorldSkills Competition in Paris, Marc Teyssier took home the gold medal. This Interaction Design student will, therefore, represent France in the International finals of the WorldSkills Competition in Leipzig in July 2013. After Clment Faydi in Calgary in 2009 and Nadim Raad in London in 2011, it is now Marcs turn to try and figure among the top 10 budding web designers in the world! Inscrit en catgorie webdesign aux Olympiades des Mtiers de Paris en 2012, Marc Teyssier y remporte la mdaille dor. Cet tudiant de loption design dinteractivit reprsente donc la France pour la finale internationale des Olympiades des Mtiers Leipzig, en juillet 2013. Paul Janvier, an apprentice studying at Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique for a 2-year vocational diploma in cabinet-making specializing in contemporary furniture, also won gold in the cabinet-making category at the WorldSkills Competition in 2011. As such, he went on to be the worthy representative for France in London in July 2011 where he received a bronze medal. Paul Janvier, apprenti au sein de Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique en BTMS bnisterie option mobilier contemporain, a galement remport la mdaille dor dans la catgorie bnisterie lors des Olympiades des Mtiers de 2011. Il fut donc le digne reprsentant de la France, Londres en juillet 2011 o il a reu une mdaille de bronze.

The Interaction Design program has won us a number of awards at the WorldSkills Competition. In 2011, Nadim Raad first represented the school at the regional level, and then went on to represent the Region at the national level. Gold medal winner, he represented France at the International finals in London. Loption design dinteractivit a t maintes fois prime lors des Olympiades des Mtiers. En 2011, Nadim Raad reprsenta dabord lcole lors de la comptition rgionale, puis la Rgion pour la comptition nationale. Commerce in the city is undergoing some important changes. The constant requests received by Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique for our expertise in Spatial Design and the experience of our Business Strategy Department led us to propose certain topics for reflection, and highlight the importance of design in this process. In partnership with various institutions such as consular chambers, local and regional authorities and professional organizations, Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique has set up four initiatives to boost the modernization of these retail spaces: awards for retailers who inject new energy into the city-center; a prospective study and concept proposals led by students and professionals, as well as a continuing education scheme; planning ahead for new accessibility laws to come into force by 2015 in all public places; using the designers skills to rethink a shops positioning, and especially those of the younger generation who brings with it the power of a digital native culture and an innate understanding of new purchasing trends! Les commerces de centre-ville sont en pleine mutation. Les sollicitations constantes reues par Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique pour son expertise en design despace et lexprience du service Stratgie entreprises lont amene proposer des pistes de rflexions et rvler limportance du design dans ce changement. Organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Nantes & Saint-Nazaire, the city of Nantes and Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique, the Nantes Shop Design Awards, launched in 2010, acknowledge local retailers for their image-building and spatial design, their originality and distinguishing features, their sales performance and their community values. Each year, five winners are announced in a symbolic place in Nantes, such as the Station Prouv or the Quartier de la cration Cluster. Organiss par la Chambre de Commerce et dIndustrie Nantes Saint-Nazaire, la ville de Nantes et Lcole de design Nantes Atlantique, les Trophes Nantes Shop Design rcompensent depuis 2010 les commerants pour leur design didentit et despace, leur caractre diffrenciateur, leur performance commerciale et leur valeur citoyenne. Chaque anne, cinq laurats sont rvls dans un lieu emblmatique de Nantes comme la Station Prouv ou le Cluster du Quartier de la cration.

The idea for Apilabo, part of the Natural Curiosities installation thought up by Aurlie Moyon, was an extension of her final degree project during her Masters degree in Transcultural Design China in 2011. The chance encounter in Shanghai between Aurlie Moyon and Christian Le Cornec, Managing Director of the Nantes Saint-Nazaire Chamber of Commerce and Industry, played a pivotal role in this project developed thanks to a fruitful partnership with Exponantes (subsidiary of the Nantes Saint Nazaire CCI and managing body of the Nantes Expo Center (Parc des Expositions). Aurlie, who was already working on the question of conserving biodiversity in the city, came up with a proposal to create urban refuges that would provide shelter for wild bees and encourage pollination. Her project, supervised by Bernard Vaissire, Director of Research at INR (the National Institute of Agronomic Research) and specialist in the field, won over C. Le Cornec, who then presented it to Frdric Jouet, Director of Exponantes, as an idea that could be used as part of its committed approach to sustainable development. Developed between November 2011 and June 2012, with the help of lcole Suprieure du Bois (an Engineering school specialized in Wood Science and Technology), a landscaper and a communications agency, the permanent and perennial installation consists of two main elements. The Clos sauvage is a wild and natural area bringing together 21 floral species favored by local bees, and the Petits oasis includes a feeding area featuring Totems or beehives. Apilabo was commended for its awarenessraising efforts on biodiversity at the Business and Environment Awards organized by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) and the Ministry of Sustainable Development.
