Chapter 1/ Miserable
My mom and I aren’t that close now that she isin her room all day. I hate that she was introduced todrugs. She used to be my best friend. Yeah. I rememberwhen we used to go to the park every Monday and Friday.I love how she used to push me on the swings. Now sheisn’t herself. She used to date this man named Landon. Inever liked him. He introduced my mom into drugs. Heisn’t dating my mom anymore, but they are drug-buddies.When she first started that cocaine, I used to knock onher door. “Mom, can I come in?” I would ask. “No - nobaby. Mama sick right now.” Now I don’t even bother.I cry myself to sleep every night. I am an only child, and I have nobody. Nobody here to play with me, parentme, and be my friend. The only person I have is my best friend,Michael. I don’t have any female friends. Some peoplefind it strange. I am a girl myself. Girls at my school aretwo faced; they act as they’re your friends, and then gooff and call you names.Michael, he is a good friend. A lot of peoplebelieve I like him thanks to Charade. She started a rumorabout me. Like I said, most girls are so snobby. However,it’s not like that. I just have strong feelings for him. Theway friends are supposed to feel about each other. butthat’s not important. What’s important is that my mom isa drug addict. There isn’t any telling what she’s probably

smoking up right now.I want to go and knock on her bedroom door, butinstead I peek through the crack of the door. I only seea crack due to the window curtains. I see half of thebrown table Landon stole for her. I decide I’m going toknock on the door anyway. “Knock! Knock!” I give her twobig knocks.“Wh —what you want baby?” she asks.I canhear her scrambling around to put away her drugs. “Can Icome in?” I know this is a worthless question. “No, honeymama still sick.” “Well can I get you anything? You nevercome out to eat.” “NO,” she screams, “I mean no I--I justneed some alone time.” She insisted calming her voice. Ipretended I didn’t notice. This makes me want to cry. My eyes water, butI fight them off. “Well okay.” I say with tear-filled eyes.I run to my room, jump on my bed, and cry. I cry for along time. “My mother doesn’t love me!” I sob.Suddenly, there is a knock on the door. Iwipe my eyes quickly to say, “Who is it?” “It’s Landon.Open the door.” He says. He might seem to be talkingrudely, but that is just the way he talks. When he walksthrough the door, I cannot help but notice his clothes. Hehas on some old torn brown pants, and a black leather jacket. He also has a brown paper bag. I know it hasdrugs in it, but I say nothing. “Hey Petunia!” His voiceloud. “My name is Paige.” I try not to roll my eyes, but Ican’t help but to. I walk out the door on myway to Michael’s house. It feels so good to be free. Free

from that cruel house. As I walk closer to the door Inotice how nervous I become. It might be because I go tohis house too much, and I know that she is tired of seeingmy face.He must be pretty lucky. Hismom isn’t a crack-addict. They look so happy together. They always play with each other, and laugh with eachother. She acts like a mom should act.I ring the doorbell. Youcan hear the big “Ding Dong!” echoing through the house.I can also hear him running to the door. ”Who is it?” hesays out of breath. This makes me chuckle. “Paige.” I say.“Oh! Come in.” When I walk through the door, I can smellhis house scent. I love the way it smells. It smells likemixed berries and fruit. His house is also very homey. When I go there, I feel home. It feels like I belong here.“P,” Michael asks, “How is space?” he says. We bothgiggle.Michael lovesfigures of speech, especially metaphors andpersonification. He also likes to use sarcasm. Sometimesit annoys me. “So what do you want to do today?” he asksme. “I don’t know. I kinda want to play your wii system.” Isay. “Cool. It’s upstairs in my room,” it says, “I’ll be therein one moment.Okay.His room is so clean andorganized. When you first go in, there is a waterbed tothe right. Its sheets are so soft.
