Q
: I am concerned about thepeople here at Lajes. The reasonI say this is because I have spoken to thewoman who was hit by the truck onbase last year and the last I heard, nothing was done. Why is it taking solong? What needs to be done aroundhere before actions are taken? She toldme that she and her two children werewalking across the CROSSWALK andwere hit by a truck. First of all, whatconsequences has the driver gotten fromthis, if any? Is there any protection forthe people here at Lajes? Our houses arebeing broken into every day, our carsare being broken into on and off baseand people are getting hit by cars, andnothing is being done about it. What arewe as Military members and familymembers offered if there is no SOFA agreement to help us?
 A
: I appreciate your concern and Iassure you we are taking theappropriate actions in regards tosafeguarding the security of Lajespersonnel. As guests in a foreigncountry, we use the Portuguese legalsystem to resolve issues involvingPortuguese citizens or property. In thecase of the accident you mentioned, itwas just that, an accident. Praia Policeresponded and conducted abreathalyzer test on the driver at thescene, determining alcohol was not afactor. A police report and insurancepaperwork were filed through thePortuguese judicial system and insur-ance companies, respectively. Thank-fully, all victims made a full recovery. All off-base accidents and crimes arehandled by local police agencies andprocessed through the local judicialsystem. We have taken steps recently tobring more attention to the larcenyproblem, including addressing protec-tive measures with landlords andopening a dialogue directly with thePortuguese police. Our role is tocontinue to report crime to the properauthorities and put away and secure ourvaluables to make Americans less of atarget for opportunity theft in our carsand outside our houses. Americansliving overseas face similar challengesaround the world. Put in perspective,Portugal is an extremely good host andwe face few security threats here.Lajes personnel and resources onbase are protected by a Portuguese AirForce-led, combined Portuguese AirForce/US security force.
