A couple of weeks ago I was atMermaids Café, chatting with acouple of folks that have livedand worked in this area a longtime. One guy, an older fellow
who grew up here in the fties
(
cough…Richard….Schaefer
)and the other has been a veryreputable diesel mechanic inMdR for decades.“Look at this place,” saidSchaefer, looking at theneighboring buildings and thegeneral disjointed skyline. “Thatplace looks like a penitentiary, that looks like a giant warehouseand those things over there looklike something out of the Jetsons! It’s horrible.”The conversation turned moreserious and the mechanic lookedsort of sad and grim as he spokeof the marina. He was thinkingout loud about how he would tryand perhaps use an old beachcatas an on-water work-truck toget around, once the congestion
gets too stiing. He muttered
some other dismal projectionsin a matter-of-fact tone and Iwas about to say, “hey, have youtried to get involved and makeyour voice heard about thisstuff?” But then I thought – thisguy isn’t a community activist –he’s a mechanic who’s focused
on making a living and xing
our boats. It’s his voice and many otherslike his that will be silent whilethis marina reforms. The wordon the street is the County of LosAngeles does not care for thelikes of him or the future of thisplace as a “boating community”- that this is and will always bea marina second and a county
paycheck rst. Many believe
that the county is the villain inthis passion play and would stopat no immoral act in pursuit of
cash ow. There is no feeling of
loyalty. It is adversarial.Me, I try to be objective andguardedly hopeful – it’s myway. I think the county hasdone an awful job of selling thegood things that might be in ourfuture and I believe, generallyspeaking, people despise majorchange like this – which inspiresan aggravated negativity.I encourage people to go to thecounty’s www.envisionmdr.com and participate. Weigh inand interact. Frankly, I have noidea if these folks are puttingon appearances or are trulyreaching out, but I do know if no one plays along, there willbe no sympathy when unwantedchange steamrolls on in – it’sworth a few minutes to let themknow you’re out there.
