INTRODUCTION
HVFAC – a term coined by CANMET (Canada Centrefor Mineral and Energy Technology) in late 1980’srefers to a concrete having a low water content andin which at least 50% of the Portland cement isreplaced by a good quality fly ash satisfying certainspecifications. This concrete usually alsoincorporates superplasticizers – chemicaladmixtures which help reduce water while providingthe needed workability. Concretes with highvolumes of fly ash have been used in mass concreteapplications for more than 75 years, where low heatof hydration instead of strength development was amajor criterion. Hoover dam built in 1930 is a finestanding example of such a concrete.Since 1985, research work carried out at CANMETand elsewhere has shown that HVFAC has theproperties of a high performance structural concreteDue to its superior performance and engineeringproperties (in comparison to conventionalconcrete), the development of HVFAC has openednew doors to sustainability of modern concreteconstruction. When made with compatible materials and understringent quality control, HVFAC has excellentworkability, low heat of hydration, adequate earlyage and high later age strengths, reduced dryingshrinkage, reduced micro cracking and henceexcellent durability characteristics.
HVFAC PROJECT IN INDIA
CANMET - MTL in partnership with CII and otherpartner organizations in India have taken up theHVFAC technology transfer project, funded by theCanada Climate Change Development Fund throughCIDA.The aim is to develop India’s ability to reduce GHGemissions and promote sustainable development of
