Grade 1 Music Improvisation Recording Remix Project Name: Thomas Spackman Date: 07/07/2013 Learning objectives: Students will

l be able to sing a song and echo tonal patterns using solfege syllables and hand signs in mixolydian tonality. Students will be able to identify meter and tonality by first identifying resting tone and divided beat. Students will be able to perform a duple meter chant and echo duple rhythm patterns using beat, divided beat, divisions, elongations and syncopations. Students will be able to improvise duple meter rhythm patterns using beat, divided beat, divisions, elongations and syncopations. Students will be able to record a chant and improvise four beat rhythm patterns using apple garage band. They will remix their recording with at least one instrument and upload their product to a public site. Standards: National Association of Music Education Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines. Evaluating music and music performances. Materials Needed: Bean bag Puppets x 2 Smartboard Ipads and Garage Band Screen cast of recording and improvising with garage band Warm up: We will begin class by singing a familiar song and performing the accompanying activity. We will sing Hello Everybody Are you Happy, a mixolydian song in duple meter. First, students will identify the tonality by singing the resting tone. Then, we will walk/dance around the carpet singing the song. When we get to the B part, three students will jump into the middle once their name has been called. These students will echo a mixolydian Tonic, Subtonic or Dominant tonal pattern using solfege and handsigns. This will continue until all students have been called. Lesson Procedure: 1. Review of Same/Different, My Mother Your Mother conversation game. I will review a previous lesson in which we learned to identify same/different rhythm patterns and create/improvise four beat patterns in duple meter. First, I will ask students to show me same or different with their hands (two open hands means same, one open one closed means different). We will perform the chant

together and I will perform two four-beat rhythm patterns in a conversation with two animal puppets. As a group students will show whether they think the patterns were same or different. I will give the puppets to students and they will have conversations with each other, the first creating a four-beat pattern and the second creating a different one. The rest of the class will determine whether those creating patterns were successful in making different patterns within the required restraints. 2. Garage Band Recording of Improvisation and Remixing with Loops Students will be split into partners. As a class, they will re-watch the screencast assigned for homework and I will write the steps on the whiteboard. Once they have reviewed the steps, requirements of project and how to post it to SoundCloud, I will give each group an Ipad and headphones to begin working. Using the Ipad and garage band, students will record the chant My Mother Your Mother and take turns improvising 4 beat patterns using divisions, elongations and syncopations. They will add at least one and no more than two instruments from the loop library and share their finished product to a school account on SoundCloud. If time allows, we will listen to and evaluate each others recording/improvisation projects. 3. Closing and Review In closing, we will review same/different and the nature of improvisation. We will play a familiar game using the My Mother Your Mother chant. While saying chant, Student A throws bean bag to Student B Student A performs a pattern while holding up same/different with their hands Student B performs either the same pattern or a different pattern If Correct: Student B becomes student A, going back to step 1. If Incorrect: Student B goes into the middle of the circle. To get out, Student B must catch the bean bag and perform the correct same or different pattern. Assessment: The student-created recording project will serve as an assessment of their rhythmic achievement, improvisation ability and recording sequencing skills. Recording Project Criteria Students created recording project 16 beats long Students performed chant in time with metronome Students A created patterns in duple meter using Du, Du De, Du ta De ta and variations and vice versa Student B created a pattern different from student A and vice versa Students added one instrument to their recording Students successfully posted project on SoundCloud
