A Dream by Any Means
Abstract The 1960’s was a turbulent time for people of color; this was atime of racial oppression, brutality, and strugglesfor civil rights.Out of these events, arose a need to voice their wrongs, thecorrections of the errors in society, and for justice and equality toprevail. Two men emerged from different backgrounds toaccomplish this task, and Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm Xbecame the voices of the civil rights movement. These men usedthe different events in their formidable years to shape theirdifferent philosophies. On the one hand one-man, usedgraciousness, calm and nonviolent organization to increase theupward mobility of the people, “We shall overcome”, became aprominent theme in his messages, and he conveyed themto themasses with peaceful determination. The other sought toaccomplish this task “By any means necessary”, and sought toincrease empowerment under any circumstances. Many of histhemes focused on revolutions, separatism, and a disparaginganger towards white America that was at times difficult todistinguish from hate. Both of these men, leaders in their ownright, spread their respective views thru passionate speeches andwritings that contained messages of equality, self-awareness, andhope to the Negro race. Two enormously gifted men, who werewilling to sacrifice all to accomplish their dreams, by any meansnecessary, to advance American Blacks toward the direction of equality.
