Pattern of the Count

Recording the digits and counting from 0 to 1000.

In this activity students will:

Q Use blocks to model numbers one-by-one in sequence. Q Record the digits and say the numbers in sequence to 1000. Q Regroup by packing and moving blocks-of-10 and blocks-of-100. Q Identify the pattern of the number words and digits in our base ten system.

Setup:
Student arrangement: Small groups (2-4) and one math station. Each small group needs: Approximately 170 single blocks and holders 1 place value mat with digit cards 3 activity sheets Access to tape and scissors Arrange in Math Station: 1 three-place Counter Pencils, tape, and scissors 34 activity sheets

Pattern of the Count

Introduction:
H Pass out three activity sheets, tape, and scissors to small groups of students.

Model and direct students to: H Cut out three tables with three columns each for hundreds, tens, and ones. H Tape the top of each table to the bottom of another table. They can cover up the heading hundreds, tens, and ones so that the columns line up. Note: If this is done properly, each student will have one long strip with 3 columns (labeled hundreds, tens, and ones across the top) and 60 rows. The group should Example tape together the 3 sets of 60 rows to make one longer strip with 180 rows. Hundreds Tens H Write a 0 in the ones column in the very bottom row of their number strip. 1 H Explain that the groups will be counting, building, and writing 1 numbers to 100 and beyond. Pass out the rest of the materials. Have each group (you may want to assign tasks): H Place one block on their mat. H Set the digit cards. H Record the digit 1 on the second to the bottom row of the activity sheet (above the 0). H Continue placing blocks 2 through 9 one at a time on the mat and recording the digits from the bottom to the top of the activity sheet. H Stop when they reach 10. Note: H Pack and move the block-of-10 to the tens place. A common error is for H Set the digit cards. students to put a 10 in the ones place. H Write a 1 in the tens column and a 0 in the ones column.

Activity:

H Continue as a class for a few more blocks and then have groups work at their own pace. H If groups finish early, they can continue by adding additional sections to the top of their number lines.

Closure: H Encourage students to identify and discuss patterns in the digits they recorded. H A second activity sheet is provided for follow up. On this activity sheet, students record patterns they discover, and explain and show how to pack and move tens and hundreds.

Assessment:

H Do students accurately record the digits? H Do students confidently pack and move when needed? H Do students identify patterns? Do they see how the digits cycle from 09 quickly through the ones,

slower through the tens, and even more slowly through the hundreds?

Extensions:

H Set up a math station with a three-place Counter, 1000 single blocks, holders, pencils, tape, and

scissors. Create a class number line from 0 to 1000 by having teams of students go in 15-minute intervals to the station in order to place blocks and record numbers from wherever the previous team left off. H It is equally important for students to count backwards down to zero and record the counting numbers along the way. Reuse the same activity sheets and have students model with blocks, set the digit cards, and record the count backwards from any starting number.
