JAY-Z
MAGNA CARTA... HOLY GRAIL
studio release. But it is an event and Jay-Z is a man that means business. Unashamedly. His talent almost seems effortless. The album title Magna Carta... Holy Grail is meant to generate discussion (in short) about the unseen puppeteers of the world. In a puzzling move this artist about the underdog re-wrote the definition of leak via 5 million pingers out of Samsungs chequebook, a move that made MCHG pre-release platinum. Smooth moves by a half-billionaire wonder. This is a man unashamedly about business as much as music, two things he does well so what can you do but just accept it? Musically MCHG is a flashy collaboration of big names Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean and wife Beyonce appear, as does Timbaland in the background. Its all the usual tricks and once youve bouldered through the opening track it plays out pleasingly business as usual. It means business and for the most part means music Jay Z reconnects with his muse.
WRITTEN BY JUSTIN FOWLER

Tweed: A rough-surfaced woollen cloth, typically of mixed flecked colours, originally produced in Scotland. Theyre a retro funk-folk foursome, described as Joni-Mitchell-meets-Fleetwood Mac. The marriage of intellectual self-observation and catchy harmonies, and the interweaving of various melodic threads.

Jay-Z is one of the most successful Hip-Hop artists on the planet. His power is awesome and while it can be argued that it isnt undeserved there is definitely room to talk about whether this mans still about the music. The cynic could easily see Magna Carta... Holy Grail as a flex of his muscle. Its likely this album will annoy a few from the personal comparison to Cobain and garbling of Smells Like Teen Spirit in opener Holy Grail to the event commercialism surrounding this 12th

REWIND OF THE WEEK

TRACY CHAPMAN
TRACY CHAPMAN
to the timeless content of the songs, her sincerity, and the clean and sparse production of David Kershenbaum back in the 90s. Chapmans dignified and distinctive voice continues to convey defiance in Talkin Bout A Revolution, longing in Mountains O Things and resolve in For My Lover. She proves herself an accomplished storyteller via the quiet desolation of Fast Car and again with Behind The Wall, providing a devastating account of domestic violence sung a capella. The sonic settings range from the percussion driven Shes Got Her Ticket to the keyboard accented Baby Can I Hold You. While the multi-platinum success of Chapmans eponymous 1988 debut might have been unexpected, its an album thats had lasting impact. With themes of economic inequality and the dreams of the downtrodden that run through this stripped back album, Chapmans poetic sense makes her work seem personal rather than preachy. Driven by simple melodies and affecting lyrics Tracy Chapman remains an enduring triumph.

Tracy Chapman is the self-titled debut album by Tracy Chapman, released on April 5, 1988 by Elektra Records. This release was a remarkable achievement at the time, in that an acoustic singer-songwriter could grab the publics ear during the heyday of slick, synthesized pop. But possibly an even greater feat was that people were interested in listening to what Chapman had to say socially conscious political and social commentary - and how she said it. The impassioned liberal activism and emotional resonance brought her music to life, and even years later, with quiet eloquence and smouldering outrage, her music is relevant and compelling. THE LONE RANGER

Like a cross between Transformers and Godzilla, this flick comes from the elaborate mind of sci-fi pioneer Guillermo del Toro (Pans Labyrinth) centring on a battle for Earth between massive monsters and human-manned robots created to take them on. Stars Thors Idris Elba and Its Always Sunny in Philadelphias Charlie Day.

directed by Gore Verbinski Starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter

EPIC
GENERAL RELEASE
You cant fault Disney for pitching The Lone Ranger as Pirates of the Caribbean in the Wild West. But while you can hold a bright candle to that comparison, Gore Verbinskis ability to imitate the earnest enjoyment of its source material is what really shines through. The familiar greed, land confiscation, political corruption, and attempted genocide that come with screen depictions of American Natives vs. The White Man serve as background fodder here. The real story comes with Johnny Depps Tonto moulding Armie Hammers goody-two-shoes John Reid into the hero he could be though he would have preferred his brother Dan Reid. Its all bookended by an older Tonto retelling the adventure to a young-un a narrative device that could have been chopped off the two-and-a-half hour running time. Johnny doesnt take his Jack

In a teeny miniature world, inhabited by Leaf Men and cute critters, a battle between good and evil is on that will determine the future of their world. When a teenage girl (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) finds herself transported into this secret universe, she lends a hand to the fight against the Spider Queen and her army.

WHO IS HARRY NILSSON

RIALTO CHANNEL, 8.30pm

Sparrow shtick to new Depp-ths, but Hammer feeds off his antics far better than Orlando Bloom ever did. William Fichtner brings a great cob of corn to his savage outlaw Butch, Helena Bonham Carter is effectively distracting as a dolledup professional dancer and Tom Wilkinson does a good Tom Wilkinson impression. Its too bad that Luthers Ruth Wilson is underused as a distressed damsel involved a weird incest-in-law romantic sub-plot. The constant wackiness of The Lone Ranger seems jarring in this modern age of frowny-faced blockbusters. Yet the cheesy tone acts as momentum to justify the creative absurdity of its finale, a dual train chase that features all manner of stunts that lean towards the right side of ridiculous. The result is an action sequence so vastly joyous that it nudges a threestar film into four-star territory.

GOOD GEORGE
32A SOMERSET ST

Atticus is a regular performance venue for top DJs and bands from Auckland and beyond. The design is comfortable, contemporary and distinctly New Zealand. Its the perfect social spot for drinks after work, a casual meal or meeting friends.

Good George, a Hamilton-based brewery, came to life after a bunch friends got together and decided after years in hospitality and brewing it was time to create their own craft beer brand. Their main motivation was they wanted to show people what great beer can be, convert drinkers from the norm and show them how to enjoy fantastic beer. The brewery equipment is fully open to the bar and dining areas. Brewery tours are available at certain times of the week and the kitchen is open serving brunch, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The mission of the team at Good George is to bring beer and cider drinkers experiences worthy of their time and efforts.

QUEEN B

YOU CAN CALL ME

Beyonce has announced her first ever show in New Zealand in October. Which isnt to over shadow her recent announcement of the DVD Beyonc: Live at Roseland and the documentary set to lavish our cinemas Beyonc -Life is but a Dream. And did I mention that shes thrown her celebrity status behind global aid organisations to raise support for world humanitarian day? The New Zealand show is part of her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour that has the recent addition of New Zealand and Australian dates. The tour follows an explosive half time show at SuperBowl XLVII and marks her first full time tour since the I am World Tour in 2009. If the reviews are anything to go off, the ambition and scale is much larger than anything else to come our way in along time. Flattering reviews from the New York Times, The Times (UK) and the Daily Telegraph have followed in the wake of the concert. The Daily Telegraph saying, the concert had the air of an ancient goddess worship ceremony. The Mrs. Carter Show is a spectacle of special effects, intricate strobe lighting and is hailed as the biggest Beyonc show to meander across the globe, with 92 shows in all. It has been leaving hundreds of thousands of stunned fans across North America and is built for the vast chambers that are stadiums. Beyonc: Live at Roseland, is the DVD of the show in New Yorks Roseland Ballroom that sold out in 22 seconds. The DVD is slated for launch on December 5th. It is packed with four exclusive performances and personal, intimate footage compiled onto two DVDs, the live DVD is 26 songs. Top it off, the deluxe package (really the only one worth buying) has a video anthology of seven music videos and a 20 page booklet. Needless to say, it serves as the ultimate Beyonc fangasm. Of course, it seems somewhat dwarfed by the Life is but a Dream documentary. The self directed and produced documentary is an unparalleled look into Beyoncs personal life. It documents everything from the trails of being a superstar to the smaller wonder years of childhood and the birth of her daughter Blue Ivy Carter. Beyoncs

said that the documentary exists to show her rawness and emotion. Something she had to battle her instincts to keep it in, for fear of seeming vulnerable. Im sure her fans will agree, she seems anything but as a; 16 time Grammy winner, business woman, the actress, entrepreneur and now humanitarian. Beyoncs teamed with the United Nations and a slew of aid organisations to encourage helping other people and raising awareness. This years World Humanitarian Day music video is for the singers song I was Here. Filmed in the UN General Assembly Hall it will be released on August 19. World Humanitarian Day is a celebration of humanitarian work across the globe. On the same day as the I was Here music video, the campaign is hoping to reach one billion people with a single message. Beyonc says the day is a time for us to help each other and leave our mark on the world. Instead of feeling despondent about the doomsday-esque headlines on the news. The singer says we can show we were here and we care. The Houston, Texas born singer originally made a name for herself as a member of Destinys Child. Since they broke up in 2001 shes continued forward in what has become one of the biggest careers on the R&B side of the music industry. 4 the 2011 fourth album sold 310,000 copies in the first week alone and debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 charts. With her latest releases shes pushed it to new heights and created the new limits for her career. The follow up to 4 is set to be released later on this year. If it is, its fair to say that 2013 is shaping up to be the biggest of Beyoncs career, and judging by the colossus that is Mrs. Carter World Tour, the following years are only going to get bigger. DEADPOOL
XBOX 360/PS3
If quips like, Your costume is so tight, I can tell what religion you are and Yeah, that is a gun in my pants. But that doesnt mean Im not happy to see you tickle your laughing box, then this is probably a game for you. Nicknamed the merc with a mouth, Deadpool is undoubtedly Marvel comics most laughout-loud anti-hero character. While his attire and choice of arsenal lean toward valiant vigilante savior, his actual demeanor is crude, juvenile and reckless. With hilarious results. In his own video game by High Moon Studios, there are plenty of great examples of this. Such as the moment where Deadpool slowly sneaks up behind a guard without making a sound, only to pull out a machine gun and riddle his body with deafening shots while screaming out STEALTH KILL SUCKER! Or perhaps the moment where Deadpool starts daydreaming about boobs, which muffles and blurs everything around you while the game is trying to tell you what the main objective is. While the graphics certainly arent anything to change your pantaloons over, the game delivers in the right areas. The character animations, for instance are spot on, giving Deadpools acrobatic moves the perfect blend of goofy and lethal. Hes joined onscreen by a number of Marvel cameos, including Wolverine, Rogue, Psylocke and a personal favourite Domino (who doesnt get nearly enough attention outside of the comics). The worst of the cast is Minister Sinister, who fails to ignite as a villain contender but is still awkwardly humourous. Meanwhile Cable (and his generous man-boobs) steal the show as he attempts to work alongside the erratic and one-track-minded Deadpool. High Moon Studios have injected just the right amount of crazy into this game and fans of the comics will latch onto it immediately. Others however, might need to prepare themselves for one of the maddest gaming experiences theyve ever encountered. If you fall into this crowd, but enjoy combat-heavy third person action games and have a sense of humour its certainly worth a rental. As Deadpool would say, Prepare to bathe my monkeys!

NEVERWINTER
PC
The Forgotten Realms lore is no stranger to the video game treatment. They have some of the most well regarded Role Playing Games (RPGs) under their belt, including Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale, both taking place within this particular Dungeons & Dragons setting. The Realms also holds the title for hosting the first graphical MMORPG, Neverwinter Nights (the 1991 game, not the BioWare series). So with this kind of history and the markets current obsession with MMO games, it was only a matter of time before a new Realms game hit the scene. Neverwinter (again, not related to the BioWare games) takes place some time after a volcanic eruption brought the eponymous city to the brink of destruction, and puts you in the role of one of many soldiers helping to rebuild and protect the city from those seeking to take advantage of the chaos. If you like your MMOs with a healthy serving of lore, Neverwinter really delivers this is the best example of a story-driven MMO Ive played. Of course, if you just want to kill things and level up, skipping through all the quest text and cutscenes is an option, as well. Neverwinter features a dark, gritty aesthetic to go with its post-cataclysmic setting, but in practice, it mostly just makes the game look somewhat dull. I will admit that part of my distaste for Neverwinters visuals is a subjective preference for my persistent worlds to be bright and vibrant. Even if gritty is your thing, this game falls short due to an overall lack of variety between zones; once youve been to one grim forest, decrepit township, or torch-lit cave, youve been to all of them. Thats not to say that Neverwinter is necessarily a bad looking game. Sadly, a lack of content and some of the games innovation backfiring on New Zealand connections makes it hard to recommend this over other, more established games. On the other hand, if youre a dedicated Dungeons & Dragons fan or budding content developer, you might just find what youre looking for here. Neverwinter also has a lot of potential; once it has had some time to find its feet this could be a game worth taking another look at.

Cat Necklace
By Miss Ella
This Delightful Handmade Heart Necklace By Miss Ella Is The Perfect Accessory To Make You Feel Chipper All Day. Rrp $28.25 Etsy.com

Whats the ethos of your store/ clothing line? Im a vintage stylist and hair and makeup artist based in Auckland, recreating looks from the 1920s to 1960s, and one of the editors of Glory Days. So I guess the ethos for both is looking back to the past for the future. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Marchesa Luisa Casati was an heiress and muse in the early 20th century, and it was her desire to be a living work of art. She wore live snakes as jewellery and used to go for evening strolls with her pet cheetahs that wore diamond studded collars around the streets of Venice, naked but for a fur coat. Now that is how you do style! What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Im not interested in the current day cult of celebrity and my style references are way in the past. At the moment I am completely blown away by Betty Grable in Pinup Girl perfect pincurls, feathered fans, roller skates, matching suits, ruffled aprons, sparkly eveningwear and so much cuteness. Societys biggest fashion faux-pas? Blindly following fashion trends with no consideration for ones figure. Whats the must-have look this spring? Confidence and optimism all wrapped up in a cheeky grin, finished off with some nice red lipstick. Colours/patterns big this season? Im a vintage stylist so I work in decades rather than seasons. By spring everyone will be deco-ed out after all the Gatsby parties, so Im imagining hyper-feminine full skirted 50s cotton dresses will be popular as a reaction to the boyish beaded look. What are the essentials for a mans wardrobe? A well tailored three piece suit, a silk pocket square and an overcoat. What are the essentials for a ladys wardrobe? A sturdy girdle, a petticoat, seamed stockings, and a dress that makes you feel smokin. Everyone should own at least one good Pair of dancing shoes that can be worn all night long. Hyphenate three words to describe your style: Hollywood musical wannabe.

ENCORE
MATT BOWDEN
AKA

STARBOY

What are you working on right now? Writing a new album with the band in a Macedonia hotel room between shows. Next week we fly to Hansa studios in Berlin to record. Going to film some rock video components for a song today with JGeeks on top of a castle or another historic site, if we can do it without getting arrested. Who was an inspiration or idol to you growing up? Kind of went Jesus, Yoda, David Bowie, which probably explains a few things. When you were a kid what was your dream job? Leant more toward Batman than James Bond, but dreams need to supersede work. I wanted to change the world. Whats your favourite venue in the country? Waitomo Caves sound pretty cool. Where was the last place you went out for dinner? Sunset Ashram in Ibiza for my birthday. Wheres the best place to get Eggs Benedict? Theres a strip of cafes next to this hotel and the one that has yaitza bendico means the eggs are greasy fried with a small tub of hot mustard and cucumber. If you ask where the muffins are you get slices of sugar toast and if you ask for butter, I think they have to whip the cow. Fingers crossed there is somewhere in Germany! What has been the best show youve attended this year? Tricky one we had G3, Soundgarden, Big Day Out? Robert Plant? Tool? Radiohead? I think it would have to be Shihad and Black Sabbath at Vector. What show are you most anticipating this year? Im playing at the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria then T in the Park in Scotland, theres a bit of anticipation about those, then Steamfest Brisbane. I am really looking forward to coming home and going to Splore though, just to see everybody I know in a relaxed environment. Whats your guilty pleasure? Singing and playing the guitar in front of an audience who are moshing out to the tunes. The rush from that is better than cocaine, or ecstasy, or anything else I can think of sticking in my nose! Is tall poppy syndrome a thing? In New Zealand, unfortunately, there is a nasty little culture that one has to push through if one wants to bring change. You notice it more when you visit other cultures. The dysfunctionalities of our little colony are brought into stark relief. You just have to learn to take the negative energy and press against it to build up muscle and keep smiling. What do you most respect about your friends? Friendship and the art of love are the greatest commodities on the planet. I respect them for being themselves and straight talking. A usual Saturday night for you is Usually the second show night in a row, so it will be a good show. A usual Wednesday night for you is Hotel room with my daughter watching movies or building with Lego if were lucky. The biggest mistake youve made is Regret is a mistake, better to stay positive. The biggest success youve had is Convincing Cabinet in New Zealand to accept my drug law rewrite, then having United Nations commend us on a very creative solution and even England saying they will copy our idea certainly, gives a feel of vindication. New Zealand music needs more Oboe. New Zealand film needs more Funding. New Zealand television needs more Downtime. New Zealand theatre needs more Representation. New Zealand audiences are Fixated on their couches. One industry thats overlooked in New Zealand is Health services. We have doctors who study for five years that make you sit in waiting rooms for an hour then talk down to you. I was just in a country where they study for nine years, they come to you in 10 minutes when you call, they treat you on the spot, they solve the problem using medicine and nutritional disciplines, and they have miniskirts! Name five things surrounding you right now. Hot naked chick, baby alpaca blanket, new Killswitch Engage album, cyborg face implant with LED lights and microphone clip, half-finished Lego Shire.
