Post-Game Quotes
RED SOX MANAGER JOHN FARRELL: On what he saw from Lester: He had very good stuff, a couple of pitches that didnt get to the intended spot, the 1-2 cutter to Smoak for the double and the 0-2 cutter that Ibanez hit out of the ballpark. The 40-pitch 4th inning took a lot out of his night tonight, but still even when they bunched some hits together, a couple walks mixed in, were still in a one-run ball game. But the pitch count got him and [we] had to make a move in that 6th inning. Is it tough to have the Mariners bottom third of the order do so much damage? Yeah, they put together a number of good at-bats. I cant say it was a let down of any kind of focus or concentration, but clearly, in a couple of those spots, there were some base hits, particularly ahead in the count, that Im sure Jon would like to have back. Did you think the strike zone was a distraction to Lester? I cant say it was a distraction, because inside of the long inning, it was still just a two-run inning. He made a number of good pitches that were borderline. He didnt get the call, but I thought it was a pretty consistent zone on both sides. Again, I kind of go back to the double by Smoak. We scratch back, tie it up, and then the leadoff home run on the 0-2 pitch kind of set the tone for the remainder of the game.
