 Job title:
Systems Developer
(Band 6)Division:Information ServicesReports to:IS Development ManagerFunction:The postholder will provide system development input to thedevelopment, maintenance and support of the Library’s digitalrepository systems and related projects. The postholder will provideadvice to technical project groups. The postholder will also be ableto research and produce reports on other related topics, such asdigital preservation or web archiving. The postholder will beresponsible for aspects of software configuration management,including system lifecycle control.
Duties and responsibilities
1.Design, Develop, Test and maintain software components asassigned by the Development Manager2.Perform detailed systems analyses from initial requirements andtranslate these into effective solutions.3.Undertake the design of unit and system testing of large multi-tiered systems.4.Ensure all code and documentation is correct and up-to-date withinthe Library’s source code control systems.5.Assist the Systems Architect to develop the technical architecture othe systems to meet the Library’s requirements, including systemdesign, infrastructure planning, testing and deployment.6.Assist the Information Systems Infrastructure teams to facilitategood practice in release and deployment of development andprocured systems.7.Assist the IS development manager in work estimating andimplementation planning.8.Actively seeks to identify risks to the development and themaintenance of the Library’s systems and ensures decision makersare made fully aware of implications9.Work closely with the IS Division and Cataloguing Services Divisionsto ensure that the project meets Library core requirements andrelevant staff are informed of progress.10.Identify and manage problems arising during the developmentprocess.11.Provide in-depth advice to the Library and external committees onthe Library’s use of open standards, metadata and approaches todigital object management and digital preservation.12.Maintain a sound working knowledge of Library systems.1
 
13.Demonstrate a willingness to learn and maintain personal/technicalskills in parallel with current market developments.14.Maintain data confidentiality at all times and abide by the Charterfor ICT staff.15.In addition to these main duties, there will be a number of othertasks arising from time to time and the postholder will be expectedto take a flexible view of his/her job description.

Excellent working knowledge of software developmentusing C# and Java
Evidence of application development in an IntegratedDevelopment Environment
Good working knowledge of SQL and database design
Good knowledge of Windows, Unix and Linux servers
Good understanding of configuration, integration andtesting of large distributed database systems
Knowledge and practical experience of configurationmanagement, testing and change control procedures
Knowledge of authority control principles and issues
Knowledge of the Data Protection Act and general ICTpolicy
