Phil Hellmuth Jr. is the self proclaimed best No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em poker of all time. Phil, or Poker Brat as he often calls himself, measures his success by the number of World Series of Poker Bracelets he has won. Currently he holds eleven bracelets, however recently lost the title as youngest WSOP Main Event Champion when Peter Eastgate won in 2008. You can visit his homepagehttp://www.philhellmuth.comto readabout him or his blog.Hellmuth has been seen on numerous ESPN television broadcasts. Since winningthe Main Event in 1989, Phil had been a staple for ESPN broadcasts either as acommentator or player. His constant whining about bad luck and dramatic tantrums became something ESPN would always use to try to help ratings. Hellmuth would berude other players calling them names and criticizing their play. Poker fans and playersalike get no greater joy than watching Hellmuth bust out of a tournament.Fan or no fan, one must admit that Phil Hellmuth Jr. is a high profile player. Hegets national media exposure along with multiple endorsements or business ventures. That being said one would think Phil would be a little more careful as to whichcompanies he let use his name or image. Since 1999 Phil has been involved with theonline poker room ultimatebet.com. The first week of January 2008 a story on the 2+2 poker forum broke about possible cheating on UltimateBet (UB). These allegations camein the wake of a major cheating scandal on UB’s sister site Absolute Poker.Hellmuth saw a business opportunity with friend Greg Pierson and together theyworked together to start UltimateBet. It is well known that Phil Hellmuth and GregPierson have been friends for quite some time. Hellmuth has been involved in Greg’scompanies such as UltimateBet or IeLogic (Before Greg sold it) and Iovation. Many poker players have doubts with Mr. Pierson, and wonder why Hellmuth chose to stand byhim as well as UltimateBet.In the aftermath of the two scandals, both scandals involved insider cheating. Inone case a high stake poker player Russ Hamilton was named as the main perpetrator.Hellmtuh and Hamilton, among others, were both involved in UB from the start.Hellmuth chose to stand by and endorse the UB brand the entire time. There are stillmany unresolved issues pertaining to the cheating scandal. Two issues of immediateconcern of the affected players are 1. To retrieve Hand History games logs. 2. That allcheating account screen names be released.Another question that remains unanswered is why the fraud at UB was not caught by Iovation. Iovation is a private company in Oregon headed by CEO Greg Pierson. In acase study at UltimateBet, Iovation’s anti-fraud tool iesnare was lauded by UB employeesand deemed very effective. Why did Iovation fail to catch all the cheating and fraudoccurring on the site for years? To get a better understanding on how Iovation works, please take a look at the Iovation section below. Mr. Pierson has yet to comment aboutthe cheating scandal, either as the original software developer for UB or why Iovationfailed at UB.
