Ring 50 elections set for June meeting
Louis Meyer is running for re-election as Ring 50 president. Thevote will be held at the June meeting.Other candidates for office areArnie Fuoco for vice president, EricHenning for secretary, Bob Pattersonfor re-election as treasurer and TomPaxton seeking sergeant-at-arms.A swearing-in ceremony will beconducted immediately after thevote.  Ring 50 members who recently attended the invitation-only Fechter’s Finger Flicking Frolic magic gathering in Bativia, N.Y.,were Buddy Smith, Dwight Redman and Bill Wells. Obie O’Brien, a founder of the Four-F event who will be the 2010 Guest of Honor at next year’s event,decided this year to name the FFFF Guest of Honors for the next five years. Theyare: Steve Beam (2011), David Stone (2012), Stephen Bargatze (2013), ShawnFarquhar (2014) and Oscar Munoz (2015).

Hello everyone. This is a big monthfor us! Our Youth Magic Internationalclub will hold its first meeting June 3 at6 p.m. before the regular Ring 50 monthlymeeting. I encourage all of you to tellsome children who you know aboutthis group.If you do plan on coming or knowsomeone who is could you please sendme an email to let me know so that Ican get some counts together. Thisis a very exciting time for our NationalCapital Ring because of the youth thatwe will be bringing to us in the future.I hope you made it to our Dan Laceycompetition for Magician of the Year.That was an awesome show! Everyonedid great and congratulations to Dick Christian for winning the trophy. Wereally have tons of talent in our club.Next month will be the Winton CarrollMost Humorous Magician Competition.This is ALWAYS a very funny show.The winner willreceive the MagicalStaff that the thecurrent winner,Reggie Rice, isholding. I will let you know theresults of that decision very soon.I look forward to seeing you all inJune.Michael Taggert described the recentRing 50 Magi-Whirl convention andshow “a Herculan effort” that produceda nifty profit as well as widespreadpraise.There were 116 magicians who pre-registered for the event. There were adozen walk-in registrants on Friday,April 17, and 17 more were walk-ins onSaturday, April 18, bringing the totalto 145.Nearly 600 tickets were sold for theSaturday night stage show starring Jeff McBride. Of the total 590 admissions,32 people bought 132 advance tickets.The number of walk-in tickets sold atthe door the night of the show was 153.The unofficial estimate after theevent was that there will be a profit of $2,200, according to Ring 50 TreasurerBob Patterson.Mike Taggert said that income willtotal $18,600 and expenses arerounded out at $15,900. Bishop IretonHigh School, where the activities took place, will get a cut of about $3,600.Plans already are in the works for the2010 Magi-Whirl program.Mike reports that the headliner willbe Duane Laflin.Another well-known performer, JimSisti, will present a lecture on restaurantmagic and perform in a close-up show.IBM Linking Ring Editor SamuelPatrick Smith also has been booked toappear.

Michael Jackson has droppedDavid Copperfield from a new showhe plans because the illusionist wastoo expensive, reports indicate.The “Thriller” singer has nowreportedly hired magician CrissAngel to join him at London’s O2arena after falling out withCopperfield, who reportedly haddemanded $1 million per show.A source told Britain’s The Sunnewspaper: “Michael wants to uselots of illusions to ensure his showsare as explosive and entertaining aspossible…He was so excited aboutworking with David but fell out withhim over the money he wanted.”
