INCREASING STUDENTS WRITING ABILITY IN MAKING BUSINESS LETTER THROUGH GUIDED WRITING TO THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMK

BUDI ARTI CIREBON CITY

A. Background of Research As a developing country, Indonesia always tries to increase the quality of its human resources, So that It can follow the world development. The development in information, knowledge, technology and art demand the government to keep up with. It is providing program in English language. English is an International language and it is spoken by about a half of the population in the world. The mastery of English is necessary for everybody in Indonesia to face the social relation and the competition era. Based on the reasons above, the government has put a great interest to increase the quality of its human resources through education such as English learning. In Indonesia, English is a tool for understanding and developing knowledge, technology, trade, art, culture, etc. Beside English has a main role in International relation, such as in the field of social, economics, and trade. English can be regarded as one of the tools to improve the development of our nation. English has been taught as one of the optional subjects in the local content curriculum. In SMK English has been taught as a compulsory subject, however the students in this school in this school still find difficulties in learning English. Occasionally the students find difficulties in understanding how to write the business letter.

Hairston (2001:2) says that writing is the process of encoding a message to transfer meaning to the readers. Writing includes all kinds of written words that deliver meaning such as : Personal note : shopping list, recipe, memos, messages, diaries, etc. Professional life Other kinds of writing : letters, reports, articles, journals, papers, etc. : poetry, prose, fictions, novels, etc.

Teaching and learning process needs to involve the students actively. The students usually understand the point and can keep in their mind what they have learnt, if they are involved in teaching and learning activity directly. In this case the writer try to improve the students ability in making business letters, especially the certain expressions and the form used in it through guided writing.

B. Statement of The Problem Based on the background above, the writer has formulated the problem as follows : Is guided writing can increase the Students Writing ability in making business letter to the second grade students of SMK Budi Arti Cirebon?

C. Research Objective From the statement of the problem, the writer wants to find out whether guided writing can in can increase students writing ability in making business letter to the Second Year Students of SMK Budi Arti Cirebon. D. Scope and Limitation

Since there are many kinds of business letters such as : application letter, inquiry letter, complaint letter, sales letter, order letter, etc. And the writer would like to limit her research only of making application letter.

E. Research Methodology In writing this paper, the writer uses experimental method, which is done to the object being observed in actual case, and happens at the time of research. It is hoped that the goal of the research, which have stated before, can be achieved factually and accurately.

F. Technique of Collecting the Data The writer obtains the data resources from the students business letter in the second grade of SMK Budi Arti Cirebon. The instrument of the research is test. The test is divided into two, pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is carried out to collect the data before the writer gives try out or treatment in this case, the data means students score in making business letter and post test will be given after treatment. This test is used to collect the students score after the treatment.

G. Population and Sample Population According to Arikunto (2002-108) a population is a set of (or collection) of all elements possessing one or more attributes of interest. The writer does her research in SMK Budi Arti Cirebon. The population of the research is the

second year students of SMK Budi Arti Cirebon. In academic 2008-2009. There are five classes with the total number is 180 students.

Sample According to Arikunto (2002 : 109) a sample is a part of population, individuals that will investigated. The number of sample is smaller than the number of population. Taking such number of the sample is based on statement stated by Arikunto (2002 : 112). if the subject of population are less than 100, it would be better for the research to take all them necessary, so it is called a research of total population. Furthermore, if the subjects are more than 100, the researcher may take 10 15% and 20 25% of the population or more than this : is depends on the researchers ability. How do you choose the sample? The sample is taken by sample purpose, that are the experimental group is consisting of 43 students (XI. AP I) and the control group is consisting of 40 students (XI. AP II).

H. Data Analysis

To know whether above the data significant, the writer use the formula of Suharsimi Arikunto (2002 : 112) as follows :

I. Organization of The Writing This paper systematically consists of five chapters as follow : Chapter one : Introduction This chapter describes the background of the research, also statement of the problem, research objective, scope and limitation, research methodology, technique of collecting the data, data analysis, and the organization of writing. Chapter two : Theoretical Review The second part of the paper discusses the variable of Writing ability, guided writing, business letter, and kinds of business letters.

Chapter three : Research Methodology

Research method covers definition of methodology and the research, method of research, population and sample, technique of collecting the data and location of the research. Chapter four : Data Analysis Provide the explanation of the data analysis. The result of students in making business letter before and after the teacher give the treatment to the second year students of SMK Budi Arti Cirebon. Chapter five : Conclusion and Suggestion This chapter talks about conclusion and suggestion resulting from the study briefly.

PREFACE

Alhamdulillah hirobil alamin, all the praises and thanks go to Allah SWT, the God of all creatures, the Beneficent, the Merciful because of his mercies and blessing, the writer is able to accomplish her proposal on the topic Increasing Students Writing Ability Business Letter Through Guided Writing to the Second Year Students of SMK Budi Arti Cirebon City. This proposal is submitted to the Department of English Faculty of Teaching and Educational Sciences UNSWAGATI Cirebon in partial fulfillment of the requirement for sarjana Pendidikan (S1) degree. Finally, the writer realizes that this proposal is still far from being perfect, so any criticism and suggestions will be accepted. May this proposal be useful especially to the writer readers in general.
