Lora Heckmannhad made a batch of slice-and-bake peanut buttercookies one afternoonfor her daughter to enjoy when she picked thealmost 2-year old upfrom day care, just likecountless other momsacross the country. Thedifference on that fatefulday in 2001 was that aftertwo bites the toddler wascovered in hives.A call to herdoctor’s of
ce sentHeckmann home togive her daughter someBenedryl. But shortlyafter, little Grace beganhaving trouble breathing, and her mother hurriedher to the emergency room,a response that today, given the knowledge aboutfood allergies availablenow, would have been theinitial answer.“We have no familyhistory of the allergy,”Lora Heckmann said onMonday. “And in 2001it wasn’t in the news asmuch. There is still a lotof research to be done.” Grace and her friend DixieFlesher, both 8 years oldnow and in Mrs. Ingram’ssecond grand class atMt. Juliet Elementary, decided to do what theycan to help facilitatefood allergy researchby holding a bake salethis Saturday duringthe Willoughby Stationcommunity yard sale. MJ girls holding bake sale to benefit food allergy research
By Tomi L. Wiley
 Managing Editor
Grace Heckmann (right) has severe peanut and tree nut allergies. Her friend, Dixie Flesher (left) ishelping her raise money for FAAN (Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network). The MJES 2nd graders willhold a bake sale during the Willoughby Station community garage sale on Saturday. Grace’s motherLora Heckmann stresses, for the sake of new parents, the fact that doctors recommend not giving peanutbutter to children until after the age of one. If there is a family history of allergies or asthma, theyrecommend waiting until the child is three.
