Summer is the busiest time at tourist destinations across the UK, so why not escape the hustle and

bustle and take time out for a relaxing break at Gladstones Library. With (hopefully) glorious weather for exploring the area and a menu full of fresh and summery choices being served in Food for Thought, you are sure to leave Gladstones Library feeling refreshed and inspired. Dont worry if there are wet days, we have plenty of reading material with over 200,000 books in the Library! We have a wide range of events taking place during the summer months as we gear up to our first ever literary festival at the Library in September. GladFest will be taking place between 6th and 8th September and will see many of our favourite writers returning to the Library to give talks and workshops. The deadline for applications to our 2014 Writer-in-Residence Scheme is also coming up at the end of August, so if you are an author interested in applying, visit our website for more details.

Greek in a Week

Monday 5th Sunday 11th August

This course is ideal for those wishing to learn New Testament Greek or for those wanting to revise or improve their knowledge of it. No prior knowledge of Greek is assumed all we ask is that you try to learn the Greek alphabet before you arrive. This tried and tested course a very successful way of learning the basics of New Testament Greek - is now in its seventeenth year and is led by New Testament scholar Kalyan Dey.

Hebrew in a Week

Monday 12th Sunday 18th August

This course offers an exciting way to enjoy and understand Biblical Hebrew. Lyn Bechtel leads the week for those who wish to begin to read Biblical Hebrew. It can be enjoyed by those who know a little Hebrew and wish to revise and improve their knowledge or those who have no prior knowledge.

Welsh in a Week

Latin Second Steps

11.30am Damian Barr interviews Vanessa Gebbie Vanessa Gebbie is a novelist, poet and award-winning short story writer. She will be talking to Damian about her life as a writer.

11.30am & 1.30pm Childrens Event: Make Friends with a Book! Free events. Are you aged between 6 and 10? Jeanette
and Leah from the The Reader Organisation would love to share some stories and poems with you. Each session will be different so come to both if you like! 11.30am Bibliotherapy Sessions running throughout the day, 10 per session. Bibliotherapy is a fun individual guided reading session. books on Victorian literature and culture, Deborah will be talking about her latest research which focuses on Chesters oldest department store, Browns of Chester.

2.00pm Andrew Tate: Twenty-First-Century Gospels: Jesus in Contemporary Fiction - Andrew Tates talk will
explore why fiction and films based on the life of Jesus continue to thrive and ask whether such 21st century gospels undermine or re-invigorate Christian belief? 5.00pm Peter Francis talks to Don Cupitt - Don Cupitt is the author of forty-nine books, his broadcasting work culminated in the 1984 BBC TV series, The Sea of Faith, which gave rise to a flourishing international movement of the same name. In this interview, Don will be talking about his life and work.

Creative Writing Workshop with Vanessa Gebbie


Sunday 22 September 10am 4pm Getting to grips with flash fiction - Flash is both a
technique and a product. The technique is excellent for coping with writers' block, and the product is perfect for today's publications. A very creative, informal workshop.

11.30am Stella Duffy : Wearing Many Hats. Stella will read from her novels, talk
about her work and answer any questions you may have about the writing process, her Buddhist practice of 26 years or why she finds it impossible to do one job at a time!

11.30am Childrens Event: Young Peoples Laureate for Wales, Martin Daws Free event. Performance poet, Martin
Daws, is the Young Peoples Laureate for Wales. He will lead a fun workshop for young people aged 11 plus in which they will explore different ways of writing poetry and enjoy reading them out loud!

5.00pm Shelley Silas: Scriptwriting Workshop : Just Get On With It (ends at 6.30pm). Shelley writes for theatre, radio
and television. Her workshop will get you started or restarted.

6.30pm Sarah Perry: Gladstone, Tennyson, Hallam and Victorian Friendships Sarah Perry first novel, will be
published by Serpents Tail in 2014. She is currently hard at work on her second novel. Sarah was our Writer-in-Residence in January and we are delighted to welcome her back.

published her fourth collection of poems, Family Values, in 2011. Lachlan Mackinnon has published four collections of poetry. 3.30pm Emma Rees on Vulvanomics: How We Talk About Vaginas Emma will consider why there is such a problem in American and British culture in talking about the female body.

Llangollen Fringe

The festival of comedy, music and art tales place over 9 days in various venues around the town, including Llangollen Town Hall and Llangollen Pavilion.

Canal Linocut exhibition by Eric Gaskell


Throughout July - National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port
The show features works looking at a variety of canal-based motifs; the lock gates, the tumbling water, townscapes and landscape, the boats. The official Canal & River Trust poet laureate, Jo Bell, is showing a number of her poems alongside Eric Gaskell's prints.

Ffoto Alternative Wales: Time National Portrait Gallery: Made in 1988


22 July 8 September Bodelwyddan Castle
Two contrasting photographic displays on the theme of time and change to mark Bodelwyddan Castles 25th anniversary as a public museum. Ffoto Alternative Wales is a collective of artist-photographers from north Wales who are passionate about discovering the creative possibilities of all types of photographic processes, often revisiting early photographic techniques, adapting cameras or inventing new ones to achieve their goals.

Discover a Medieval City: Places, Voices, Journeys


Throughout July until 22 September - Grosvenor Museum, Chester
This exhibition explores life in medieval Chester. It investigates the role of religion and the citys significance as a place of pilgrimage. It uncovers the role of the guilds in trade, along with ornaments of the wealthy such as jewellery and tableware. Most importantly, it displays an array of magnificent documents which paint a picture of Chester, its citizens and visitors, including manuscripts from St Werburghs Abbey, the scripts of the Mystery Plays, and medieval Welsh poetry.

Trapped in Time: 600 Million Years of Fossils

The story of life on Earth is one of the greatest stories ever written, though it is told through fossils rather than words. This exhibition will showcase specimens from when the Earth began, the age of dinosaurs including two dinosaur eggs, and the rise of mammals and humans.

A Vision of England: Etchings by William Monk


Throughout July until 4th August - Grosvenor Museum, Chester
William Monk (1863-1937) was one of the most significant artists to be born in Chester. The exhibition demonstrates Monk's technical brilliance, not least in his subtle manipulation of ink on the surface of the etched copper plate. His prints celebrate a vision of England which ranges from the quaint corners of picturesque Chester, through the age-old tradition of historic colleges, to the grandeur and vitality of metropolitan London.

Water Babies
22 August - Grosvenor Street, Chester
Its 150 years since Charles Kingsley wrote The Water Babies. Have a look around the Natural History Gallery to see if he was inspired by the creatures in the collection.

Daytona
17 21 September - Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold
A new play by Oliver Cotton starting Maureen Lipan. Haunting, funny, poignant and full of mystery, Daytona is a play with not one but two love stories at its heart.

Mold Food Festival

We recently introduced a new addition to our suite of meeting rooms, the Sea of Faith Room, along with a number of new conference packages and options to suit a wide range of requirements. Whether your organisation is looking for a venue for its next conference or you have a project that needs completing and just need a quiet place to concentrate we have something to suit all needs. Gladstones Library now has five conference/meeting rooms. Our largest facility can seat up to 36 people and three of our rooms are perfectly designed for small meetings, interview sessions, group working or just as a quiet space in which to work away from the office. These rooms can seat up to 6 people. By popular demand, we have introduced a new all-inclusive half-day rate, ideal if you just need a room for a morning or afternoon session rather than a full day. Vanessa Gebbie is a novelist and awardwinning short story writer. Author of two collections: Words from a Glass Bubble and Storm Warning (Salt Modern Fiction), her novel The Cowards Tale (Bloomsbury UK/US) was selected as a UK Financial Times Book of the Year and Guardian readers book of the year. Recipient of an Arts Council Grant for the Arts and a Hawthornden Fellowship, her short stories have been commissioned by literary journals, the British Council, for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4, and are widely anthologised. She also writes poetry and is a freelance writing tutor.
