Summer is the busiest time at tourist destinations across the UK, so why not escape the hustle and

We have a wide range of events taking place during the summer months as we gear up to our first ever literary festival at the Library in September. GladFest will be taking place between 6th and 8th September and will see many of our favourite writers returning to the Library to give talks and workshops. Greek in a Week

Monday 5th Sunday 11th August

This course is ideal for those wishing to learn New Testament Greek or for those wanting to revise or improve their knowledge of it. No prior knowledge of Greek is assumed all we ask is that you try to learn the Greek alphabet before you arrive. This tried and tested course a very successful way of learning the basics of New Testament Greek - is now in its seventeenth year and is led by New Testament scholar Kalyan Dey.

Hebrew in a Week

This course offers an exciting way to enjoy and understand Biblical Hebrew. Lyn Bechtel leads the week for those who wish to begin to read Biblical Hebrew. It can be enjoyed by those who know a little Hebrew and wish to revise and improve their knowledge or those who have no prior knowledge.

Canal Linocut exhibition by Eric Gaskell

The show features works looking at a variety of canal-based motifs; the lock gates, the tumbling water, townscapes and landscape, the boats. The official Canal & River Trust poet laureate, Jo Bell, is showing a number of her poems alongside Eric Gaskell's prints.

Ffoto Alternative Wales: Time National Portrait Gallery: Made in 1988

22 July 8 September Bodelwyddan Castle
Two contrasting photographic displays on the theme of time and change to mark Bodelwyddan Castles 25th anniversary as a public museum. Ffoto Alternative Wales is a collective of artist-photographers from north Wales who are passionate about discovering the creative possibilities of all types of photographic processes, often revisiting early photographic techniques, adapting cameras or inventing new ones to achieve their goals.

Discover a Medieval City: Places, Voices, Journeys

Throughout July until 22 September - Grosvenor Museum, Chester
This exhibition explores life in medieval Chester. It investigates the role of religion and the citys significance as a place of pilgrimage. It uncovers the role of the guilds in trade, along with ornaments of the wealthy such as jewellery and tableware. Most importantly, it displays an array of magnificent documents which paint a picture of Chester, its citizens and visitors, including manuscripts from St Werburghs Abbey, the scripts of the Mystery Plays, and medieval Welsh poetry.

Trapped in Time: 600 Million Years of Fossils

The story of life on Earth is one of the greatest stories ever written, though it is told through fossils rather than words. This exhibition will showcase specimens from when the Earth began, the age of dinosaurs including two dinosaur eggs, and the rise of mammals and humans.

A Vision of England: Etchings by William Monk

Throughout July until 4th August - Grosvenor Museum, Chester
William Monk (1863-1937) was one of the most significant artists to be born in Chester. The exhibition demonstrates Monk's technical brilliance, not least in his subtle manipulation of ink on the surface of the etched copper plate. His prints celebrate a vision of England which ranges from the quaint corners of picturesque Chester, through the age-old tradition of historic colleges, to the grandeur and vitality of metropolitan London.

Its 150 years since Charles Kingsley wrote The Water Babies. Have a look around the Natural History Gallery to see if he was inspired by the creatures in the collection.

We recently introduced a new addition to our suite of meeting rooms, the Sea of Faith Room, along with a number of new conference packages and options to suit a wide range of requirements. Whether your organisation is looking for a venue for its next conference or you have a project that needs completing and just need a quiet place to concentrate we have something to suit all needs. Gladstones Library now has five conference/meeting rooms. Our largest facility can seat up to 36 people and three of our rooms are perfectly designed for small meetings, interview sessions, group working or just as a quiet space in which to work away from the office. These rooms can seat up to 6 people. By popular demand, we have introduced a new all-inclusive half-day rate, ideal if you just need a room for a morning or afternoon session rather than a full day. Vanessa Gebbie is a novelist and awardwinning short story writer. Author of two collections: Words from a Glass Bubble and Storm Warning (Salt Modern Fiction), her novel The Cowards Tale (Bloomsbury UK/US) was selected as a UK Financial Times Book of the Year and Guardian readers book of the year. Recipient of an Arts Council Grant for the Arts and a Hawthornden Fellowship, her short stories have been commissioned by literary journals, the British Council, for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4, and are widely anthologised. She also writes poetry and is a freelance writing tutor.
