New to PGP Desktop? 
Use this step-by-step guide to get started. You will find that, with PGP Desktop, protecting your data will be as easy asturning a key in a lock.

helps you install PGP Desktop andget started.
y
The
PGP Desktop User’s Guide
provides more detailedinformation on PGP Desktop. In it, you will learn what akeypair is, why you might want to create one, how tocreate one, and how to exchange keys with others so youcan encrypt your own data and share data securely withothers.
Note:
A PGP Desktop license provides you with access toa certain set of PGP Desktop features. Certain otherfeatures of PGP Desktop may require a different license. For more information, see the Licensing section of the
PGP Desktop User’s Guide
.

Understanding the Basics
PGP Desktop uses keys to encrypt, sign, decrypt, and verifyyour messages. After installation, PGP Desktop prompts you to create a PGPkeypair. A keypair is the combination of a private key and apublic key.
1

y
Keep your
private key
and its passphrase private, as thename suggests. If someone gets your private key and itspassphrase, they can read your messages andimpersonate you to others. Your private key decryptsincoming encrypted messages and signs outgoingmessages.
y
Your
public key
you can give to everyone. It does not havea passphrase. Your public key encrypts messages thatonly your private key can decrypt and verifies your signedmessages.Your keyring holds both your keypairs and the public keys ofothers, which you use to send encrypted messages to them.Click the PGP Keys Control Box to see the keys on yourkeyring:
1.
The icon for a PGP keypair has two keys, denoting theprivate and the public key. Alice Cameron has a PGPkeypair in this illustration, for example.
2.
The icons for the public keys of others have just one key.Ming Pa’s public key, for example, has been added to thekeyring shown in this illustration.
What Am I Installing? 
PGP NetShare
is a member of thePGP Desktop family of applications. You can use PGP NetShare toauthorize users to share protectedfiles in a shared space, such as on acorporate file server, in a sharedfolder, or on a removable media suchas a USB drive. The encrypted files inthe Protected Folder continue toappear as normal application files tothe authorized users; anyone else withphysical access to the files can seethem but not use them.
PGP Whole Disk Encryption (PGPWDE)
is a member of the PGPDesktop family of applications. Youcan use PGP WDE to lock down theentire contents of your system or anexternal or USB flash drive youspecify. Boot sectors, system files, and swap files are all encrypted.Whole disk encrypting your boot drivemeans you do not have to worry ifyour computer is lost or stolen: toaccess your data, an attacker wouldneed the appropriate passphrase.
PGP Virtual Disk volumes
— Usespart of your hard drive space as anencrypted virtual disk volume with itsown drive letter. A PGP Virtual Disk isthe perfect place for storing yoursensitive files; it is as if you havestored them in a safe. When the doorof the safe is open (when the volumeis mounted), you can change filesPGP Desktop uses licensing to provide access to the featuresyou purchase. Depending on the license you have, some orall of the PGP Desktop family of applications will be active. This document contains instructions for viewing the featuresactivated by your license.
PGP Desktop Email
is a member ofthe PGP Desktop family ofapplications. You can use PGPDesktop Email to automatically andtransparently encrypt, sign, decrypt, and verify email messages throughpolicies you control. You can also usePGP Desktop Email to encrypt IMsessions for clients such as AIM andiChat. Both users must have PGPDesktop Email enabled.stored in it, take files out of it, andmove files into it. Otherwise (whenthe volume is unmounted), all the dataon the volume is protected.
PGP Zip
— Adds any combination offiles and folders to an encrypted, compressed, portable archive. PGPDesktop must be installed on asystem to create or open a PGP Ziparchive. PGP Zip is a tool for securelyarchiving your sensitive data, whetheryou want to distribute it to others orback it up.
PGP Self-Decrypting Archives(SDAs)
— Puts files and folders intoan encrypted, compressed packagethat can be opened on Windowssystems that do not have PGPDesktop installed. SDAs are theperfect solution for securelyexchanging files with someone whodoes not have PGP software installed.
2

PGP Shredder
— Completelydestroys files and folders so that evenfile recovery software cannot recoverthem. Deleting a file using theWindows Recycle Bin does notactually delete it; it sits on your driveand eventually gets overwritten. Untilthen, it is trivial for an attacker torecover that file. PGP Shredder, incontrast, immediately overwrites filesmultiple times. This is so effectivethat even sophisticated disk recoverysoftware cannot recover these files. This feature also completely wipesfree space on your drives so yourdeleted data is truly unrecoverable.
Key Management
— PGP Desktopalso manages PGP keys, both yourkeypairs and the public keys of others. You use your private key to decryptmessages sent to you encrypted toyour public key and to secure yourPGP Virtual Disk volumes. You usepublic keys to encrypt messages toothers or to add users to PGP VirtualDisk volumes.
