WelcometofreeflyingandtotheBHPAsElementaryPilotTrainingGuide,designedtohelpnewpilotsundertrainingtoprogresstotheirfirstmilestone-theElementaryPilotaward.TheTrainingGuideisissuedfreetoallpilotsundertraining.From2010itwillalsoexistasafreedownload,whichwewillbeupdatingandimprovinguponcontinually,ontheBHPAwebsite.Newpilots:inthispublicationityou'llfindarticlesdealingwiththeaspectsofoursportthatyouwillneedtoknowaboutasyoubeginyourflyingcareer.Thebasicinformationthatyouneedtoenjoyoursportsafelyishere,alongwithfeaturesthatwillgiveyouatasteofwhat'spossibleasyouprogress.WealsoincludesomebackgroundinformationonwhattheBHPAisabout,howitisstructuredandhowwecanhelpyou.AsaBHPAmemberyou'llsoonbereceivingmonthlyissuesofSkywingsmagazine.Wehopethatyouwillfindinformationinthisissuetokeepyouabsorbedandinterestedasyourexperienceincreasesandyourhorizonswiden,andcontinuallychallengedbythismostrewardingofallsports.Abitofbackground:TheBritishHangGlidingandParaglidingAssociationistheUK'sgoverningbodyforthesportsofhangglidingandparagliding.ItisnotaGovernmentagencybutanassociationsetupbyhanggliderandparagliderpilotstorepresentandprotecttheirmutualinterests.ItismanagedentirelybyvolunteerswhogivetheirtimeandexpertisefreelytofurthertheaimsoftheAssociation.Sincetheearly1970s,theBHPAanditspredecessors(theBritishHangGlidingAssociationandtheBritishAssociationofParaglidingClubs)haveworkedhardtobuildareputationasawell-runandrespectedsportsgoverningbody,andithasformanyyearsbeenrecognisedandrespectedbytheFédérationAeronautiqueInternationale,theRoyalAeroClubandtheCivilAviationAuthority.TheBHPAruns,withthehelpofasmallnumberofpaidstaff,apilotratingscheme,airworthinessschemesfortheaircraftwefly,aschoolregistrationscheme,aninstructorassessmentandratingschemeandtrainingcoursesforinstructorsandcoaches.Withinyourmembershipfeeisalsoprovidedthirdpartyinsuranceand,forfullannualorthree-monthtrainingmembers,amonthlysubscriptiontothishighly-regardedmagazine.TheElementaryPilotTrainingGuideexiststoanswerallthosebasicquestionsyouhavesuchas:‘Isitdifficulttolearntofly?'and‘Willittakemelongtolearn?'Inanswertothosetwoquestions,Ishouldsaythatitisnomoredifficulttolearntoflythantolearntodriveacar;probablysomewhateasier.Wewereallbeginnersonceandarewellawarethatthemainrequirement,ifyouwantmuchmorethana‘taster',iscommitment.Keepatitandyouwillsucceed.InanswertothesecondquestionIcanonlysaythatinspiteofourbesteffortswestillcannotcontroltheweather,andthat,nomatterhowlongyoucontinuetoflyfor,youwillneverstoplearning.Youareabouttoenteraworldwhereyouwillregularlyenjoysightsandexperienceswhichonlyafewpeopleeverwitness.If,likeme,youbecomeaddicted,itmaytakeoveryourwholelife,butevenifyouonlyexperienceatasteofouractivitiesIhopeitmakesalastingimpressiononyou.Onethingyouwillquicklynoticeaboutthissportishowreadythetoppilotsaretotalkto,andhelp,theless-experiencedpilotstheymeet.Takeadvantageofthislegendaryopenness-don'tbeafraidtoaskthepilotsyoumeetalongthewayhowtheydoit.They'llbeonlytoogladtoofferyouahelpinghand.Butrightnow,trainhard,staycommitted,listentoyourinstructorandtakehisorheradvice,andhavefun.Welcometothebestsportintheworld.Onceyouhavetastedfreeflight,youwillneverlookback.Thissportshouldperhapscarryahealthwarning-hangglidingandparaglidingcanseriouslyalteryourlife!
